Wow!

Jim: Guess What?I got a scholarship for the next academic year.

Lisa:Wow,congratulations. That's awesome.

Jim: Yeah.I won't need to eat bread for lunch every day then!

Lisa: That's true.I think you should take me to lunch.

1、beautiful

adj.

2、ugly

adj.

Do you think I can stay to become nothing to you? Do you think I am an automaton?--a machine without feelings? and can bear to have my morsel of bread snatched from my lips, and my drop of living water dashed from my cup? Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong!--I have as much soul as you,--and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. I am not talking to you now through the medium of custom, conventionalities, nor even of mortal flesh;--it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; just as if both had passed through the grave, and we stood at God's feet, equal,--as we are!

to stick to one's gun就是「坚守立场」

Managing Director

1) She turned public opinion around by sticking to her gun.

2) The new Managing Director overturned many decisions made by his predecessor.

将 “back up”用在句子里:

例 3) The accused murderer backed up his plea to innocence with an alibi.

老牌 老手 veteran / old hand

Over the hill

Screen test

1) The veteran tap dancer has lost his touch because he’s over the hill.

解释:“tap dance”就是「踢踏舞」,所以 tap dancer就是「踢踏舞者」,然后“lost his touch”或是“lost one’s touch”的意思就是「表现大不如前」,因为如果逐字翻译的话, lost his touch彷佛意味着「失去了当年的风格」一样,因此,lost his touch意思就是「表现大不如前」,”over the hill”也就是「上了年纪」或「超过了人生的颠峰时期」。

例 2) Being an old hand at acting, she coasted through the screen test.

3) He was constantly picked on because he is a newcomer.

to bring to pass就是「使发生;或完成」

例 1) Curators in both countries are banking on the exhibit to be a hit.

2) Talks between both museums' officials brought to pass the possibility of this exhibit.

同义字是expertise(专业知识)

反义字是inexperience(无经验)

To get the ball rolling

Achilles' heel,

1) We need the know-how to get the ball rolling.

1) I wonder if she's got the stuff to hang in there.

也可以说:“I wonder if she’s got the expertise needed for the job.”

“know-how” (技术;本事) 的反义词就是“inexperience” (无经验) or “Achilles' heel”。

例 2) Intimate relationship is my Achilles' heel.

3) His divorce was mainly caused by his inexperience in intimate relationships.
