1:It is assumed that scientists will avoid making _____ claims about the results of their experiments because of the likelihood that they will be exposed when other researchers cannot _____ their findings.
A. Hypothetical... evaluate
B. Fraudulent... duplicate
C. Verifiable... contradict
D. Radical... contest
E. Extravagant... dispute
2:Those who fear the influence of television deliberately_______ its persuasive power, hoping that they might keep knowledge of its potential to effect social change from being widely disseminated.
(A) promote
(B) underplay
(C) excuse
(D) laud
(E) suspect
1: The scientist found it puzzling that his rival's theory retained its_______ despite widespread suggestions that it was now _______.
A. perspective...dated
B. currency...moribund
C. appeal ...accepted
D. complexity...unfathomable
E. credibility...recognized
2: Paleontologist assumptions about the equable nature of the climate on the primeval island of Pangaea are ________ computer simulations indicating that the island's temperatures tended to _______ during the course of a year.
A. based on... cool
B. confirmed by... vary
C. challenged by...stabilize
D. bolstered by...soar
E. undermined by...fluctuate

a)让步分句(如:带although的分句、带itistrue的分句、带do的分句等)一律跳过(但是用括号括起来),只看后半个分句;
b)suchas后的内容一律跳过,也用括号括起来,不过我会数数列举的个数,如果是4个,则必出题,其他个数不用管,出题了再回头看;

Over the years, biologists have suggested two main pathways by which sexual selection may have shaped the evolution of male birdsong。
In the first, male competition and intrasexual selection produce relatively short, simple songs used mainly in territorial behavior。 In the second, female choice and intersexual selection produce longer, more complicated songs used mainly in mate attraction; like such visual ornamentation as the peacock‘s tail, elaborate vocal characteristics increase the male‘s chances of being chosen as a mate, and he thus enjoys more reproductive success than his less ostentatious rivals。
The two pathways are not mutually exclusive, and we can expect to find examples that reflect their interaction。 Teasing them apart has been an important challenge to evolutionary biologists。
Early research confirmed the role of intrasexual selection。 In a variety of experiments in the field, males responded aggressively to recorded songs by exhibiting territorial behavior near the speakers The breekphvoqgl bor research$intk mnpevsexual selection came in the development of a new technique for investigating female response in the laboratory。
When female cowbirds raised in isolation in sound-proof chambers were exposed to recordings of male song, they responded by exhibiting mating behavior。
By quantifying the responses, researchers were able to determine what particular features of the song were most important。 In further experiments on song sparrows, researchers found that when exposed to a single song type repeated several times or to a repertoire of different song types, females responded more to the latter。The beauty of the experimental design is that it effectively rules out confounding variables; acoustic isolation assures that the female can respond only to the song structure itself。
If intersexual selection operates as theorized, males with more complicated songs should not only attract females more readily but should also enjoy greater reproductive success。 At first, however, researchers doing fieldwork with song sparrows found no correlation between larger repertoires and early mating, which has been shown to be one indicator of reproductive success; further, common measures of male quality used to predict reproductive success, such as weight, size, age, and territory, also failed to correlate with song complexity。
The confirmation researchers had been seeking was finally achieved in studies involving two varieties of warblers。
Unlike the song sparrow, which repeats one of its several song types in bouts before switching to another, the warbler continuously composes much longer and more variable songs without repetition。 For the first time, researchers found a significant correlation between repertoire size and early mating, and they discovered further that repertoire size had a more significant effect than any other measure of male quality on the number of young produced。 The evidence suggests that warblers use their extremely elaborate songs primarily to attract females, clearly confirming the effect of intersexual selection on the evolution of birdsong。
1. 认真阅读五道题,确定题型,找出关键词;
2. 粗略浏览文章,确定每道题目的位置(找不到定位,通过依次而下确定范围);
3. 理解定位明确区域,对比选项,切忌过度推导;
4. 定位不明确,注意区域中举例、标点、转折等语言现象;
Andrew is one of the most supercilious men I know. His brother,in contrast,is quite humble and modest.
表示对比关系的词汇和短语主要是unlike,not,but,however,despite,in spite of,in contrast 和while 引导的并列句等。
A good supervisor can recognize instantly the adept workers from the unskilled ones.
Green loves to talk, and his brothers are similarly loquacious.
表示比较关系的词和短语主要是similarly,like,just as,also等。
【例一】anthropology is the scientific study of man.
In slang the term “jam” constitutes a state of being in which a person finds himself or herself in a difficult situation.
定义句的谓语动词多为:be,mean,deal with,be considered,to be,refer to,be called,be known as,define,represent,signify,constitute等。
Semantics, the study of the meaning of words,is necessary if you are to speak and read intelligently.
Capacitance,or the ability to store electric charge,is one of the most common characteristics of electronic circuits.
需要注意的是:同位语前还常有or,similarly,that is to say,in other words,namely,or other等副词或短语出现。
Krabacber suffers from SAD,which is short for seasonal affective disorder,a syndrome characterized by severe seasonal mood swings.
根据生词SAD后面定语从句which is short for seasonal affective disorder和同位语a syndrome characterized by severe seasonal mood swings,我们可以推断出SAD含义,即“季节性情绪紊乱症”。
The consequences of epochal events such as wars and great scientific discoveries are not confined to a small geographical area as they were in the past.

Sediments are also dropped where a river slows on entering a lake or the sea, the deposited sediments are on a lake floor or the seafloor at first, but will be located inland at some future date, when the sea level falls or the land rises; such beds are sometimes thousands of meters thick.
Sediments are also dropped, but will be located inland at some future date; such beds are sometimes thousands of meters thick. 这是一个由分号隔开的并列句,分号前面的句子结构比较复杂,Sediments are also dropped ,后面跟了一个由where引导的状语从句,紧接着这个状语从句又加上了一个插入结构, the deposited sediments are on a lake floor or the seafloor at first, 然后才开始进行转折but will be located inland at some future date, 但是马上又跟上了一个由when 引导的状语从句。分号后面的半句比较简单 such beds are sometimes thousands of meters thick.
Sediments are also dropped where a river slows on entering a lake or the sea, the deposited sediments are on a lake floor or the seafloor at first, but will be located inland at some future date, when the sea level falls or the land rises; such beds are sometimes thousands of meters thick.
