Dear Admissions Committee,
I am writing to express my full support for Xiao Xiao, who is applying to graduate school at [name of school]. Though I am currently a visiting scholar at the University of California, San Diego, I was Xiao“s supervisor at the VVV University School of Architecture and Civil Engineering. In my [number] years in academia, Xiao stands out as one of the best students I”ve encountered.
As the professor in charge of VVV“s student union, I spent several years supervising and working closely with Pan, who served as the union”s chairperson and monitor. Pan“s work included managing the routine affairs of his class of76students and planning many student activities. Consequently, through our close contact, I gained a thorough understanding of and respect for Pan”s character, his strong organizational skills, and his leadership ability. For example, in fall, Xiao organized an evening party for incoming freshmen. I still vividly remember the party“s resounding success, as well as Pan”s unswerving attention to details.
Dedication and passion are hallmarks of Pan“s character. Although the work he did as a student leader was time-consuming and tiring, he never complained. He simply embraced his responsibilities, and enjoyed the tasks at hand. Students acknowledged his devotion to his classmates repeatedly: For four years in a row, the student body elected him monitor and chairperson. Xiao felt great warmth not only for his classmates, but also for society at large.
Sincerely,
Professor NAME
Department of Electrical Engineering,

Dear x,
When China, my motherland, is mentioned anywhere in the world, people willnaturally awaken association with the exquisite and beautiful chinaware made inChina, the country that enjoys a history of porcelain production one thousandyears earlier than other countries and a reputation for her elevated art andremarkable craftsmanship. European people attempted at any cost to acquire thetechnology of porcelain making and at last achieved the satisfaction of thisgoal from a priest named Francois-Xavier D’Entrecolles, thus the present varietyand brilliance of chinaware in both China and the West. Nevertheless, in an eraof electronics and information today, China has fell far behind the advancedcountries in the field of information materials science and engineering, in itsresearch and application as well. As a graduate majored in physics andtechnology of electronic thin films, I am eager to trace the footprints ofFrancois-Xavier D’Entrecolles so as to bring the advanced technology of materialengineering to China by means of studying in your prestigious university forPh.D. program in the area of material engineering, realizing my dream of being auseful scholar to my motherland.
University of x is a world-famous university and especially well-known forher intellectual strength in the area of material engineering with herirresistible magnetic power pulling excellent students from all over the worldto her. Therefore I justify clear realization of the sharp competition I amconfronted with. But with a fine background of education in specialty, a firmfoundation in theoretical study, the practical skill in experiment, and thecultured ability to engage myself in independent research work, I have theconfidence to meet the challenge from other rival applicants.
In University of x of China, which enrolls brilliant students from variousareas in China with her strength in the area of material science, I accomplishedmy undergraduate study in the specialty of magnetic materials and components andmy graduate study in physics and technology of electronic thin films, in theperiod of which I kept to be the top student in my class and was awarded theschool fellowship every year. I was elected “Graduate with Merit” of myuniversity upon graduation.
Benefiting from the strict training in my university, I gained fairacquaintance with the knowledge and theories in my specialty. Meanwhile, I readvarious journals and magazines at home and abroad, following the footsteps ofthe development of new theories and technology. I tried my best to participatein possible experimental work and research work, cultivate my skills in the use, maintenance, and modification of vacuum-evaporation equipment and pulse-laser-deposition equipment, and attend academic workshops and symposiums. Themodulation rate of the BST voltage controlled thin film variable capacitor Iproduced reaches the level of 80%, approximate to the highest level in record sofar.
My achievement was highly appreciated by relevant scholars and specialistsand I have been invited to participate in various programs experiments. As aresult of my persistent effort, I have published “BST Voltage ControlledMicrowave Electronic Components” and “STO Pulse-Laser-Deposition Growth of ThinFilm” respectively on such kernel academic journals as x in China, the formerarticle being praised by relevant specialists as “assuming the function ofguidance to the application research on BST thin film in China.”
Based upon the confidence of my theoretical background and researchcapacity, I chose the topic “Production of High-frequency Composite” for myBachelor’s thesis. On the basis of extensive collection and absorbing of therecent information on magnetic materials and components, I decided to do myresearch on the project of compounding Co2Z material by applying Y2O3 and Sr2+and adopting pre-processing technology, in addition to the control of workingprocedure and temperature point. In consequence, the improvement of magneticproperty of the material. In the oral defense of my thesis, the presentspecialists concluded that the research, measuring high academic significance, was novel in topic selection, logical in argument, and creative in idea. MyBachelor’s thesis was chosen as “Excellent Thesis” of the university throughcritical assessment.
At present, I am busy with my Master’s thesis “Au/BST/YBCO Ferro-electroThin Film Voltage Controlled Components.” There exists a great differencebetween China and Western countries in experimental conditions with regard toBST thin film materials and we cannot produce desirable microwave componentswith available references nowadays. But the RMS on the surface of the BST thinfilm I designed and produced is of merely several angstroms , the modulationrate 80%, and the power loss 4‰, which satisfies the need of microwave componentproduction. This achievement is at forefront in China at present.
During this period of study and research, I have deeply felt that mycountry falls far behind the advanced countries in the area of materials scienceand an intense need to study the advanced theories and technology in the fullestenforced academic institute. Thus I select University of x where I believe Ican realize my dream. In addition to the unparalleled strength in the area ofmaterials science and technology, University of x boasts the internationalbackground with scholars and students from different regions all over the world, the congenial atmosphere of academic research, and the systematic cultivation ofcreativity in her students. I am eager to enjoy an opportunity to enrich myselffrom this valuable academic nutrition and at the same time I hope, on thepremise of the improvement of my theoretical construction and of my experimentalcapacity, to give full play to my initiative and potential strength and in thisway to contribute my intelligence to University of x -+in the participation inrelevant research projects.

Dear _,
When I considered what should be the next step in my development it was out of the question that I would go for a degree at University. At school I proved to be a successful quick-learner in every subject, yet there were two circumstances that influenced most strongly my final decision in which area to expand my knowledge. Those were my background and experience gained during my school years.
The ever-changing world of business is what I witness every day on the streets and at school, it is an important background for whatever media - radio, television etc. Realizing its influence over world matters of utmost importanceas well as such of personal preferences, it is impossible not to acknowledge its dynamic nature. Moreover, all business areas under go constant development which is to make them better and more successful. But apart from indirectly being a part of the system, it is a whole new world when you are directly involved in it. For the last five years I had the chance to take an active part in the family business thus gained first-hand experience of the business world. All of the above has led me to realizing that no matter what role you want to play in the business world it is vital to know the basic principles as well as being up-to-date. That is why at this point of my personal development I strongly aspire to make my next step as an International Finance and Trade student at the International University College. I am eager to obtain the academic knowledge that will not only explain in theory my experience of many years, but will also introduce me to things I have not known and experienced before.
From my earliest childhood I had been presented the opportunity to oversee the development of a small business in the dynamic atmosphere of world economics. At the beginning I would only help my parents mind the store. But through the years as I advanced academically I developed a deeper understanding of the matter and proved greater efficiency. In the competitive and challenging age, as it is today, it is of great importance to be as effective as possible. In the light of this, the family business instilled some great values in me. Chief among them was the value of hard work. It was a matter of course that every member of the family must give the best he can for the general welfare. I made no exception. Thus I experienced both the inner, rough side of the business, starting from things like goods supplying, through understanding of cash flow, contracts and conditions, price setting and costs to rivalry and plots, and the outer side of which the general public is aware – marketing, sales consulting, professional service and maintaining an optimistic and productive climate. I learned a great amount of valuable skills such as scrutinizing complex situations and problem solving, managing multiple assignments, flexibility when setting a priority as to streamline the work process, judicious attitude when making bargains, training and motivating employees to do better than they thought they could. Being a loyal and devoted worker is probably the most important premise for success. And it is not just a question of business, but rather one concerning a person’s attitude of mind. I know what I am capable of and always try to do better wherefore mediocrity terrifies me. In my opinion there is no excuse for a lazy mind. I remember reading a thing Jacques Cousteau once said that perfectly fits here. It sounds like this: “When one man, for whatever reason, has the opportunity to lead an extraordinary life, he has no right to keep it to himself”. I cannot agree more with him.
As far as education is concerned, it has been of great value to me in view of broadening my conception of the world. The diversity of classes taught at school helped me realize and develop my intrinsic talents, shaped my personality and gave me a clear idea of the best ways to fulfill my potential. I was mostly drawn to mathematics because of the logical and strategic look over things it teaches. From it I learned to see the big picture as well as being in charge of every little detail. I especially enjoyed the English and German language classes where the knowledge of fluency seemed to come naturally to me. Further on, I got the chance to take part in a school international project called “Media – a meeting point for everyone in Europe”. Due to my Ukrainian-Bulgarian origin I found no difficulty in building confidence in interacting with people from different national backgrounds. Because of the focus of the project on the basic ways in which media communicates with people this experience added to my awareness of the manipulation and application of technology. It allowed me to develop an ability to collect and analyze data in order to distill the essence and present it clearly and concisely. Through this project I became conscious of some of the core principles of marketing, namely flexibility and thinking outside of the box.
Books have made a huge impact on my future goals. I have always been interested in studying biographies of famous people as to analyze their way of thinking and strategies they use in real-life situations. Through reading besides getting to know Plato, Nietzsche, Jung and their philosophies, I met such figures as Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki who deeply influenced my perception of the nature of money and of the world as a whole. From these two mentors I learned some successful principles which have lasted over hundreds of years, I learned what a lifestyle really means as well as what it is worth.
All of the above stand behind my strong aspiration to fulfill my potential. I want to acquire the academic knowledge needed in order to hold privilege jobs and top positions in the future and be able to make the best decisions in the business world. I am ready to take full advantage of the opportunities life presents and dedicated to do more, be more and give more and better my best every day. This is the way in which everyone will benefit.

I am ready to take full advantage of the opportunities lifepresents and dedicated to do more, be more and give more and better my bestevery day. This is the way in which everyone will benefit.
Yours sincerely,
Dear ,
Buildings are a necessity in life, and I would like to be the nextinnovative mind that will produce works as extraordinary as that of Renzo Piano,Sir Norman Foster and Zaha Hadid. Neo-Futurism is a movement that interests mebecause of the mix between art and technology which can be shown in works suchas Wembley Stadium or The Shard. I think this course will let me showcase mycreative, team work and IT skills that are fundamental in this field.
Art is a regular hobby of mine, and studying it in school not only made meexperiment with different media and techniques, but at A2, it allowed me tothink like an artist and understand, for example, the symbolism of aPre-Raphaelite painting such as Ophelia. Not having studied Art at GCSE meantthat I had to learn new techniques such as mono-printing or dry point within ashort amount of time and this progress is shown in my AS sketchbooks.
Mathematics is a subject I have enjoyed throughout my school years, howeverI believe my AS grade does not reflect my full potential. Classical Civilisationwas a subject that I thoroughly enjoyed at GCSE. The modules within the courseled me to research about the history of architecture during the Greek and Romanperiods. I learned about the detail in which buildings were designed, from thefrieze on temples to common buildings such as homes and various key elementswhich reflected a part of their culture.
English Literature allowed me to broaden my knowledge of Literature bystudying novels and poems. This subject has also taught me how to understandsomeone else’s opinion and counteract with a valid argument throughessay-writing and class debates. I feel that this quality will be helpful whendiscussing social and environmental aspects of designing buildings.
Computing enables me to understand the way in which a system works, and theopportunity to create my own system as part of my A2 unit led me to understandseveral aspects of computers such as programming, creating databases and workingwith clients. I have been interested in CAD since I was introduced to it brieflyduring Textiles Technology at GCSE and since then, I have practiced personalprojects with programs such as Photoshop and AutoCAD.
I enjoy helping with teaching lower school students as I usually help outin art lessons on a weekly basis and have also taken part in a peer mentoringscheme in which I was able to guide Year 11 students for their GCSE exams. Thisis something from which I gained an insight about taking on responsibility andhaving leadership skills. This year I am also part of the Student Council, andas a sixth form student, it is my responsibility to ensure that input from allkey stages are being taken into account during organisation of events or simplyfor new changes.
Volunteering weekly at Cancer Research helps me gain customer service andwork as part of a team for an important cause. I also read novels, and oftenwrite works of fiction, including topics such as mystery, crime and coming ofage.
I regularly play badminton and I would like to carry this hobby with me touniversity. Recently I have enrolled on an online course for creative writing inorder to broaden my writing skills. A personal visit to Bath earlier this yearalso heightened this interest in past architectural designs from the Greek andRoman periods and the elements which we still may use today such as arches oraqueducts. I would like to study Architecture at university because I believethat a combination of my skills and creativity will let me integrate well withinthis course. I am keen to learn about how current technology is used to developextraordinary and unique buildings, taking culture, nature or even the past asinspiration.

Dear _,
There is a rapid growth in global organisational concepts, crystallised in Japanese business philosophy, to be as effective as possible in the most efficient way. New technology involving networking information and automation influences the behaviour of business and enables significant transformation. This need to maximise efficiency and effectiveness in such a competitive age is increasingly crucial to the success of a business. This is why it is an exciting and fascinating period in both the commercial and economic world to study Business Management.
Adaptability, creative thinking and the application of technology are now intrinsic to managing businesses. I have developed these principles and enjoyed the spectrum of sixth form study that has taught me to approach problems from different political, economical and psychological perspectives. Throughout Business Studies, to complement what has been taught I have researched real-life business solutions and how they have been implemented, such as the responsive marketing used by Coca Cola to prolong their business cycle and sustain major profitability. Studying ICT has enabled me to examine the criticality of technology in giving businesses a competitive edge by considering issues such as organisational objectives, people and legal implications rather than making decisions based solely on financial factors. Furthermore, studying Psychology gives me insight into the human influences on organisational behaviour through studying motivational theories such as the hierarchy of needs model proposed by Maslow, whilst the coursework has developed my skills in collecting and analysing data in order to establish trends and draw conclusions. Studying English Language has allowed me to develop an ability to express my ideas clearly and concisely.
I have worked for _ as a Tester, assisting in the development of _, the fastest-selling PC game ever. It was a significant learning experience and made me evaluate myself and better understand my strengths and skills, such as the ability to easily identify discrepancies and communicate these effectively to management so that problems can be solved. Recent experience at _ Ltd gave me a taste of working within a larger organisation. Operating within two different, but equally successful organisations has enabled me to see contrasting leadership styles and corporate culture. Within college, I participated in a paired reading project where I listened to and assessed readers lower down the school which required a relaxed, patient and friendly approach with the younger students, as well as punctuality and dedication. Throughout the past year, I have represented the college in district basketball and rugby competitions.
I am a committed member of the Colts team at my local rugby side. I have captained the team in previous seasons which required leadership, confidence and diligence. In my spare time, I enjoy listening to a range of music, going to the gym and socialising. I am a regular reader of the Financial Times, enjoy keeping up with current affairs and business news. I enjoy reading a variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction such as 'Making It Happen' (J. Harvey-Jones) where his common sense approach complements the management theories of more staid texts. This degree will equip me for my career in the unpredictable and fast moving world of commerce.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
A degree in marketing is something which interests me; it's exciting and stimulating and will provide me with the key requirements to begin a successful career in the field. The marketing profession requires individuals with good interpersonal skills, who are dedicated, quick thinking, robust, diplomatic, articulate and have a competitive flare, all of which are skills and attributes that I recognise in myself
Marketing appeals to me because it is arguably the most invigorating and vital department of any business with a responsibility to initiate new challenges and opportunities
My experience in the workplace and in non academic activities has helped me develop a strong interest in working in the corporate world
In _ I was the youngest successful applicant to become a member of the Youth Council for the Millennium Dome. For two summers I did work experience at my local MP's Westminster office. My main duty was researching specific topics and producing reports on my findings, my work was used in parliamentary reports on issues such as teenage pregnancy and drug abuse in foreign countries. My first job was as a waitress at a local restaurant and I am currently working for Sainsbury's. In the past year one of my extra curricular commitments has been volunteer work as a classroom assistant at a local primary school. This year I have also been given the position of form prefect, which means I provide additional support to a form group and to members of staff
Through these experiences I have been able to discover, develop and demonstrate skills which are central to succeeding in marketing, including both oral and written communication, creativity, working to deadlines, perseverance, dedication and adaptability. I have also learnt the importance of a good client-employee relationship and how personal integrity is a fundamental requirement for any successful business or organisation
Sports has always been a keen interest of mine, it has given me an understanding how a team of people can work effectively together towards a common goal. For the last two years my house elected me the Head of my House netball team. This experience has helped me again develop skills including organisation and leadership. It has also given me the opportunity to motivate others to succeed. In school I am a trained ”peer listener", which means I am trained to listen to younger students problems and encourage them to think through a solution for themselves. I have spent my Sixth Form years at a boarding school which has taught me how a group of people must live and function closely together with respect, maturity and co-operation
At my previous school I covered the portfolio work for an intermediate level GNVQ in leisure and tourism and a foundation level GNVQ in health and social care. Currently I am an enthusiastic member of the Debating Society and Reading Group at school
Next summer I am going to continue to develop my knowledge and experience of the commercial workplace through an internship at a public affairs firm. This will undoubtedly give me a better grounding in the marketing and PR world, and enable me to progress to university with first-hand knowledge and experience which will be invaluable for a degree in Marketing.
