1.每晚躺在床上,入睡以前,听BBC和VOA(也可以去书店买光盘);

2.看CCTV9九频道;

3.教材: 'New Concept English Book III', 'Listen to This' 'Step by Step';

雅思口语Part2话题高分范文:a science that you are interested in

Topic:Describe a science that you are interested in.

You should say:

I would like to talk about chemistry,a branch of physical science (自然科学) that studies the composition, structure, properties and change of matter (物质).

Chemistry is a compulsory course for third-year junior school students and for all senior high-school science students. I,of course, studied it since the last year in junior high school.

In high schools, most students are apt to learn chemistry by doing numerous quizzes, some

even by rote (死记硬背).I,instead, took a unique approach. Before each class,I would get fully prepared;do my best to find the law(规律)of reaction among the atoms (原子),molecules(分子) or chemicals bonds(化学键) etc,and search relevant information online. Also,I watched videos of cutting-edge (尖端的) scientific discoveries and intriguing/compelling/scintillating (有趣的)stories of the scientists mentioned in the chapter I was going to study. Apart from those,I engrossed myself in chemical experiments,as long as I was available.

In my first Chemistry class,I was fascinated by the structures, shapes, colors, and smells of chemicals my teacher showed to the class. Ever since then, my passion/zest(极大的兴趣) for chemistry has been ignited. I very much wanted to delve into(钻研),and unveil the myth of (揭开神秘面纱),Chemistry.

and explain how you felt about missing the appointment.

Sample answer:

To me ,the most regrettable moment is that I missed an appointment with Jie , my best friend in the high school. The original purpose for our appointment was to discuss which city we would like to spend our college life in. We had an agreement before , and it was that even though we did not go the same college , our universities in the same city would be acceptable.

On June 7th , ,Jie told me to meet him in the Starbucks near our high school and he said in the phone that his parents decided to let him study in the U.K. The moment I heard the news,I was so angry that I thought his studying aboard had been planned for a while ,which he just never mentioned to me. At that time ,I was really disappointed about him and did not want to meet him.

After that , we never talked to each other and I did not send him any good wish messages when he left to the U.K. Now I feel I was so stupid at that time ,and have no ideas for rebuilding our friendship. To me, I am really afraid of the silence between us once he answered my phone.

Ok then. well after a bit of thought. I've decided to talk to you about bamboo. However, I honestly don't know if I'm gonna be able to talk for two minutes about it, but I'll give it a try!

So first of all, as for how I know about bamboo, well I can't really remember exactly how I first got to know about it, you know, it could have been in a biology class at school, or when I was out somewhere with my parents, but my guess would be that I probably first knew about it at primary school, because that was about the time when we first started learning about things like that.

Anyway, moving on to why bamboo is important, well I'd say it's pretty important for a number of reasons, the main one of which would be that it can be used to make so many different things, you know, such as chopsticks, chopping boards, flooring, what else.um......oh yeah, and musical instruments, like the bamboo flute for example.

And another thing to mention is that bamboo is also used a lot for carrying stuff. For example, what I've seen people do is rest it on their shoulders, and then hang things on each end, because as well as being strong, it's also very flexible, so it won't break, even with very heavy loads.

Describe a time you got into contact with an old friend.

You should say:

Who he or she is

When and where you met

What you talked about

And explain how you felt about this experience

This is a really good question for me, because I’ve a number of stories about this topic! I’ll tell you why: I’m a really social person, and I also went to school, primary and secondary school, before the age of WeChat and social media, so I actually remember the days when you basically had to visit your friends, or phone their parents to ask them if they were coming out to play… Anyway, so as the years went by we lost touch with a lot of friends, and only really got back in touch with them because of the introduction of social media in mainstream society. The one I was especially pleased about getting back in contact with was a girl called Xiao Shuang, she was a petite, pretty, quiet, but super-intelligent girl who was most certainly my best friend for many years in school. She had an amazing sense of humour too, and I’ll never forget her jokes and pranks in class. Anyway, we got in touch, exchanged contact details, and met in person in Beijing. It was great to see how much she had grown up and changed, although she maintained the same sense of humour and attitude to life as before. We met around the Lama temple area of Beijing, and we went to drink a coffee in one of cute coffee shops in a street called Wu Dao Ying. The café we chose to meet in was dedicated to cats! Yes, there are lots of cats in this café – real cats as well as pictures and ornaments of cats. We talked about our studies, life now, life then, how things have changed, and our aspirations for the future. I found it particularly interesting to discuss with her how she had changed, how her interests in life had developed and the challenges she had faced over the years when we had been out of touch with each other. It made me realise that I should make more effort to get in touch with more old friends from the past – and that it’s definitely worth it. We learn a lot from sharing experiences with other people and keeping in touch with people we knew in childhood. So, all in all meeting Xiao Shuang after all these years was a brilliant experience and I would strongly recommend that anyone make every effort to get back in touch with old school friends.

Part 3

1. Why do people lose contact with their friends after graduation?

People lose contact with some friends for a variety of reasons. One reason is that their paths in life diverge and their lives go in different directions. They lose common interests and goals, and life moves on, their ambitions change and their priorities differ. This is not always the case, but sometimes is what happens, often gradually over time. It’s a common reason anyway. Another reason might be that you end up losing your friends’ contact details, though today this is less common because people are often connected quite extensively with many friends and friends of friends via various online social media accounts.

2. How does modern technology influence friendship?

Modern technology influences friendships by enabling people to keep in touch all the time with friends and families, enabling people to see each other’s daily updates on things like WeChat Moments and other social utilities and platforms, and also enabling people to make new friends through online friends and dating sites. Also, there are a lot of online forums where people can post comments, opinions, ideas and share their experiences around specific or general topics and themes – often those that get along or share similar views on these forums, can make friends with each other and then develop those friendships. So, modern technology, mostly internet-based technology and software, has a huge impact on friendships and relationships. From enabling people to nurture existing friendships, to helping people make new friends.

3. Do you think people’s relationship with friends will change when they get older?

I think that friendships do evolve and change over time, and as we get older we have slightly different relationships with our friends, yes. It really depends. One example might be that as people get older maybe they have less time to spend with friends, and more responsibilities, so they might stay in touch with less friends, or be more selective about the friends they do spend time with. Children tend to play with a wider variety of friends, also because they are less discerning and have less prejudices. As we get older we take stronger likes and dislikes to people and also have less time for people who we might not immediately get along with or share common ground with. Evolving friendships are different too – adults who really want to maintain friendships will make efforts to develop them and be emotionally supportive of friends, and as the years go by, that can make friendships stronger, and last into old age. These are arguably the most valuable friendships.

4. Some people believe that friendship is more important to young people compared with old people. What do you think of it?

Yes, I think this is the case. Young people are very keen to play and go out with friends, and are more energetic and active. As I mentioned earlier, they are also perhaps less discerning about who they choose as friends and maybe have a wider variety of friends with varied interests. I think older people have less energy for going out socializing or meeting new people, and they are more comfortable with family, or hanging around with the few friends that they have had for many years. Obviously, it also depends on the personality of the individual – some people, regardless of age, are simply more social and extrovert than others, and more keen to keep friendships going and make new friends, whilst others prefer a calmer, more introvert lifestyle at home, with family, or spending a lot of time alone and without the responsibility of dealing with multiple friendships and the demands they can bring with them.

Describe a time when you first talked to others in a foreign language.

You should say:

When this happened

Who you talked to

What you talked about

And explain how you felt about this experience

The time I remember quite clearly when I spoke in a foreign language for the first time properly was when I was introduced to a new foreign teacher in university. I had, to be honest, spoken English, beforehand, but this was the first “real” time I had had a conversation with a native speaker, so I’d like to talk about this. I recall that she was quite friendly and supportive and spent the entire first class giving us lots of opportunities to speak and talk about ourselves, our ambitions, our family and all sorts of things like this – personal things. I found this quite exciting in a way, although I was quite nervous because I was not used to her pronunciation and so I had to concentrate to listen. But I was pleasantly surprised at how much English I could speak when I was asked questions, and the more I spoke the more I felt confident about speaking more! She then put us in groups of four other students and we had little tasks to complete – questions and answers, oral English tasks. She came round to each table and asked us about our answers and chatted to us more. I must say that I quite enjoyed this. Although it wasn’t really any different to what my Chinese teachers had done in English lessons, I found it somehow more exciting because it was a native speaker. It was like an opportunity to show and test my language skills with someone who really did speak that language as their first language and I really liked this chance. From this day onwards I became a lot more confident in speaking English, and I often found this teacher in her breaktimes and made an effort to hang out with her a bit, spend a bit of time drinking tea with her, showing her the local sights, and using this opportunity to practice my language skills. So, I will always remember this first day when I got to speak English with this native speaker, and thereafter becoming good friends with her. So, all in all, I felt great about this whole experience.

Part3

1. What difficulties do young people in your country have in learning foreign languages?

Most study pretty hard and are good at grammar and language in the context of tests, written tests, reading tests, listening tests, for example. But they find the most difficulty in speaking in natural situations.

2. Why do you think some people are very enthusiastic about learning another language and other children are totally uninterested?

Well, some people believe this because it’s basically true! It’s a lot easier to learn to speak than to write in a foreign language. This is partly because if you are writing you usually have to control your grammar a lot more strictly than if you are speaking. Sentences in spoken language are usually shorter, less complex, and involve less complicated vocabulary. Also, if you are writing in a language you usually have to write more formally, and use a different register of vocabulary than if you are merely speaking. Written language is often slightly more formal, too, which again, involves a richer and higher range of vocabulary and lexical use than if you are just having a spoken conversation. So, in general, there are a few reasons why people are correct in saying that it is more difficult to write in another language than speak that language.

3. Is it easier for people to learn a new language when they are young or when they get older?

Definitely when they are younger! At least that is usually the case. Young people have more energy, more enthusiasm and generally pick up new things faster. It’s as simple as that really. At least most of the time. However, there are some older people who also learn fast, because they have previous experience they can build on.

Positive change in your life中的一道提高题来和大家举个例子:

How has modern technology changed people's lives?

Technological advances have done a lot of good to work and life.

As far as work is concerned, well, the invention of the internet has managed to connect people from around the world, allowing us to tap into resources and talents in a way we had never had before. And more advanced public transport means that more deals and transactions could be made in a shorter span of time. So that’s why working people are more productive and businesses are thriving.

And our life has been made easier thanks to the fast-developing technology. Airplane and high-speed rail enable us to travel long distances within one single day. And home appliances have shared much of our domestic duties, from cooking, sweeping to laundry.

Technological advances have done a lot of good to work and life.

As far as work is concerned,in a shorter span of time, domestic duties 等等。

1. Listen to yourself.

2. Slow down!

3. Picture it...

4. Get physical!

你发this, thank, they,和little, wool等单词困难吗?

5. Watch yourself.

6.Copy the experts.

7. Practice makes perfect.

Weekends

1 What do you usually do on weekends?

On weekends I do a variety of things. I rest, I read, I go out with friends to a park or go to the cinema. Occasionally I go have dinner in a restaurant – there are lots of new restaurants opening up in my city so I often go with a group of friends to a restaurant, usually a hotpot restaurant. I like eating out with friends and family – it’s a popular communal activity in my country, actually.

2 Would you say weekends are important to us?

I think they’re very important. It’s when we get time to spend with family and friends and kick back and relax and forget about work or the hassles of daily life. Weekends are when we can wind down, recharge our batteries and relax a bit after a working week. I think everyone should have free weekends.

除此之外,答案提到了三个表示“放松”的短语:kick back, wind down和recharge our batteries。

3 Do you often go to the cinema on weekends?

From time to time, depending on what’s on. I wouldn’t say I go that often, perhaps once every couple of months. But when I do go I enjoy it immensely. I love seeing a film on the big screen and eating popcorn and maybe going to dinner afterwards and discussing the movie with my friends.

4 What do you plan to do for next weekend?

I have no plans next weekend. In fact, I’ve got some work to catch up on so I will work half of the time and the other half of the time I’ll do odd jobs around the house, run some errands in town and then just get an early night. These days I don’t go out much on weekends really. It’s been a busy few months for me and I’ve got all sorts of random things to do by the time the weekend comes around.

解析:do odd jobs的意思是干一些杂活,get an early night的意思是尽早入睡,早点休息。

例如,“She works in an old office”听起来的发音应该是“She work-si-na-nol-doffice。”

1. Do you think museums should be free?

Um….yeah, ideally I think they should be, because they’re great educational resources. But if it’s not possible, then a small entrance fee I guess is acceptable, cos that will help a museum cover its costs and stay running. alternatively, museums could be free and have a donation box, so that if you can afford to donate something towards the upkeep, then you have the opportunity to do so.

Ideally -

Cover its costs -

Stay running – stay in operation

You use alternatively to introduce a suggestion or to mention something different to what has just been stated.

Donation box -

The upkeep of a building or place is the work of keeping it in good condition

2. Are young people in your country interested in historical museums?

Yeah, I think most young people are, to a varying degree. So in other words, I think young people here have at least some level of interest in them, although it’s probably fair to say that they’re not that high up on the list of favourite things to do! You know, I’d say the young here are generally a lot more interested in stuff like computer games and foreign TV series, but history’s deeply rooted in our culture, so I think it will always hold some level of interest for anyone in my country, both young and old.

To a varying degree -

3. How can more people become interested in history?

I’m not that sure, but I suppose um… the way it’s taught at school could be improved, and possibly made more interesting. So for example, instead of simply staying in the classroom, teachers could take students out more to visit historical sites and anything of historical relevance. So that’s one thing, and as well as this I guess, um…, increasing the amount of history documentaries on TV could also have a positive effect on developing people’s interest in history.

And finally I think parents can play an important role by introducing history and all its wonders to their children, and if they do it well, then I’m sure it’s going to help children develop an interest in it.

History and all its wonders –

4. Tell me some movies or music about history in your country.

There are countless! Um… where do I begin?! Let me have a quick think! Um… Ok, well, one that comes to mind is a film called Hong Gaoliang, which I think was directed by Zhang Yimou. And you might have heard of him, cos he also directed the Beijing Olympics. But anyway, going back to the film, it’s set in the early 1900s and it’s basically about what happened during that time, which included the War of Resistance against Japan. That’s about all I can remember because it was ages ago when I watched it.

Countless–无数的

One that comes to mind is – 一个想到的是…

You use anyway or anyhow to change the topic or return to a previous topic

The War of Resistance against Japan –

5. What do most people like to do when they visit a historical site?

I guess what the majority of people do is just, like, take photos of the place. That’s really the main thing. But as well as that, most people will also look at the things on display and uh, what else? Um… Oh yeah, and maybe buy one or two souvenirs to take back home as mementos. So that’s pretty much it really!

Like– here, “like”, has no meaning, it’s just said during a pause.

So that’s pretty much it really –

6. Would you say movies help people develop more interest in history?

Yeah, I’d say they can, because after all, movies are quite vivid and so they make history come alive. And another thing is that a lot of people can’t be bothered to read a book about history, but they’d gladly go and watch a film about it, simply because movies are a bit more entertaining. So yeah, I’d say they generally do help people become more interested in history.

And another thing is that– 另外一点就是….

Can’t be bothered to…

Gladly -

1. What are the values of family in your country?

Answer: That's a really important question. First of all, I believe that family values don't differ from country to country and allow me to say that they should be the same throughout the world. As far as I’m concerned, the most important values of a family are the so-called moral values, which enable people to draw plausible distinctions between right and wrong, good and bad, true and false. The lessons learned from the family are invaluable throughout our life.

Furthermore, the family values are vital in making decisions and can be obtained by personal and life experiences with close relationships with family members. To be more specific, some examples could be: being honest and trustworthy, courageous and patient, taking up responsibilities as well as adding values to the world are the norms of our family and society. A family is so important and we stand for our family members no matter what. Thus the family comes first is the morality everyone in our country believes. We also consider a family as the unit of a society or a country and bonding, relationship, trustworthiness, helpfulness are lessons that come with the close family ties.

2. How family bonding is necessary for happiness in life?

Answer: Our parents are the reason for our existence and with them, we get a family. Parents are the persons we see and rely on when we open our eyes for the first time. Moreover, parents are the primary educator and they teach their children how to develop confidence, socialisation skills, morals, values and views in life. Since they are the base of our family, closeness in a family leads people to have an intrinsically fulfilling and flourishing life.

This can be justified by the fact that kids who enjoy strong family bonding tend to be happier and mentally healthier that those who are in a dysfunctional family environment.

3. What type of family do you like? Nuclear family or joint family?

Answer: That’s really an interesting question! My personal opinion is that a nuclear family is much more preferable to me compared to a joint family. The reason for my preference is possibly because I grew up in a nuclear family and it was a pleasant memory for me. Besides, in a nuclear family there are the couple and their children and in this situation anything is manageable and family members have a stronger relationship. Fighting and quarrel are rare in nuclear families.

On the other hand, the second type of family is extended family or joint family and includes grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins and so on. I prefer a quiet environment than a noisy one. In a joint family, this is unlikely to happen and people always do not have privacy. Therefore, I strongly believe that a family only with mum, dad and siblings works better for me.

4. How family value and bonding have changed over the last decade?

Answer: Unfortunately, the sacred notion of a family has lost its meaning to a certain extent in the last ten years. People don’t invest in feelings anymore and don’t retreat as well. Nowadays quarrels between couples are a frequent occurrence and because women are financially independent, they don’t step back like they did many years ago. Moreover, a principal cause that has led to this situation is the internet. When family members have some spare time they prefer to consume it by going online instead of having some family conversations. I would jump to the conclusion that people who decide to create a family should let go off their ego and in difficult times they should also think that their children want their parents to be happy and together.

5. In what ways have families in your country changed in recent years?

A. The families have changed greatly in my country for different reasons and situations. Earlier the families were united but currently they have been shaped into nuclear families. When people used to live the in the country areas, the families were large but with the advancement of time, the families have broken and took their own shares and formed small families instead of the large ones with the excuse of extensive maintenance cost, misunderstanding and more other issues.

6. Should husbands and wives have different roles within the family? Why / why not?

A. A husband and a wife should play different roles for different reasons. From time immemorial, males are considered as the bread earners while the females are the homemakers. But the ideas have changed massively in the current days. Now, both the husband and wives are seen engaged in money-earning activities. Moreover, they are sharing their responsibilities between them and thus they are playing different roles in the family.

7. Which are more important to you - your family or your friends?

A. My family is the most important thing to me than friends. A Family is a place where you will have everything. The family members will try to support you reasonably; both in good and bad situations and in return, they do not expect anything. It is the most important feature of a family. The family members will never leave you forever, but the scenario is just the opposite with the friends. When there are no benefits in helping you, the friends will be nowhere to be found! They will avoid you in every possible manner. So, my family is my top priority.

8. What conflicts can arise between a person's family and a person's friends?

A. There are different issues that can create trouble between you and your family or you and your friends. Regarding the familial issue, your family members may guide you to the right way but due to your lack of knowledge, you may get involved into arguments over the guidance. You may prefer following the one which appears better to you (although in reality that is not meant for you).

On the other hand, conflicts with friends may range from any trifling matter to a major issue like business loss or life or death situation. Family members are always with the well-wishers or try to make better but the friends are not always with the same thought to make you feel good unless they have any hidden benefit with the issue. The common conflict can arise when someone spends most of his/her time with friends and family members starts complaining about it.

Advertising

Describe something you bought because you watched its advertisement

1.What are popular types of advertising?

Well, nowadays, there are numerous marketable ways that companies use to target their audience. One of the most favoured ad types is corporate sponsorship which embraces everything from different sports teams to fairs and festivals. It is also considered to be an effective means of increasing the company's visibility in the community. One more well liked type of advertising is banner ads. They literally clutter up the Internet, which means they are well received by consumers too. Oh, I nearly forgot to mention leaflets which are still actively distributed by people in public places and, of course, hoardinqs that virtually plaster cities with different kinds of messages.

2.What type of media advertising do you like most?

Well, I would say that I prefer Internet advertising because the Internet is the only type of media I am using these days. Ads constantly pop up on the screen of my computer chasing me wherever I go online. What I like about it is that the adverts that appear are based on my previous browsing history, so, even though I am disturbed by them, at least, they show the stuff I am interested in.

3.How does advertising influence children?

Well, it differently affects kids' wellbeing mainly leading them to unhealthy choices, changes in behaviour and even eating disorders. Children are an extremely vulnerable target audience. They believe the messages in advertisements without a doubt and then may make excessive demands on their parents for the products they see in the ads. Children are in a development phase and not able to understand the persuasive character or ironic connotations hidden in advertising messages taking everything at face value, which poses a threat to their health and behaviour. Though, the cases when adverts influence kids in d positive way setting a good example ' them to follow. So, it depends.

4.Is there any advertising that can be harmful to children?

Unfortunately, there is. I am more than sure that it's not good for kids to see advertising of alcohol, cigarettes, drugs or unhealthy foods 'cause children are cognitively and psychologically defenseless against advertising and often imitate specific behaviours they see in the media. So seeing somebody smoking or drinking a glass of something strong can push a child to trying the same, which is, no doubt, unhealthy and harmful for them in young years.

5.What factors should be taken into account while making advertisements?

Oh, plenty of them, actually. I guess that number one factor is the content because that's what will either attract or not attract the viewers. I would even say not the content itself but its uniqueness, which is of primary importance for a good advert. Factor two is a target audience and the regional culture 'cause different buyers and different cultures can be attracted by different things. I would also name presentation and selection of suitable media as an important factor to consider and maybe the reach or number of people exposed to the message. That's it, I guess.

Describe a city/town you’ve visited that you like

Describe a city/town you’ve visited that you like

1. What makes a city a good one to live in?

Oh, a lot of factors, to my mind. The ones I consider the most important for life are affordability, I mean housing expenses, the prices for consumable goods, the price of petrol, utility services, taxes and stuff like that, and accessibility, appearance and amenities, that is the presence of the airport, train and bus stations, good transport links, a number of educational institutions, a wide array of recreational facilities, shopping malls, parks and gardens and, of course, hospitals. I would also add good employment Opportunities and low rates to my priority list, oh, and the climate as well.

2. What can people do to improve the air quality in the city?

Well, stop using polluting vehicles, first of all, I mean petrol and diesel cars, and start using battery-driven vehicles or public transport. This will significantly improve air quality levels as well as save some money for car owners. It's also a good idea to ride a bike if there are special cycling lanes in the area or walk around instead of using private cars. One more really vital thing for improving the air quality is greening the city. I mean planting trees, bushes and flowers in the yards, gardens and parks.
