I’d like to talk about a program from my childhood called “How 2”, I believe it’s originally a British TV show that was televised in my country with subtitles. The presenters certainly spoke with a British accent.
It’s hard to pin down exactly what type of program it was, I guess a mixture of science and history, with some everyday facts thrown in for good measure. The title itself is a play on words, as the series would show you ‘how to’ do certain things.
The show is aimed at kids in middle school or high school. The hosts would routinely do experiments to demonstrate science in action, I remember one in particular where the presenters were trying to pour water out of a bottle in the quickest way possible. The winner had a very good technique whereby she would swirl the water, creating a vortex and causing the liquid to fly out of the bottle far quicker than any of the others’.
As you would expect, the show got me interested in science and learning, but it also showed that you could do many experiments yourself and have fun at home, with everyday objects and materials that were easy to get hold of. At school we would need equipment and the teacher would have to supervise us, but at home we could be left to our own devices, with just a bottle and some water to keep us amused.

I think I’d have to go for puzzles. Jigsaw puzzles to be precise. I have a huge collection, although most of them are hidden in a cupboard somewhere in my parents’ house, these days.
I used to have a special table exclusively for doing my puzzles on. Once I got into the groove, I would become immersed in the puzzle and get lost in a world of my own. Occasionally I would try to solve one with my grandmother, but this was more for her benefit as I much prefer doing it by myself. I know it sounds selfish, but it’s just not as much fun sharing the responsibility with someone else and the pay off isn’t as big at the end.
I started when I was just a toddler, putting shapes into pre-cut holes, but slowly I graduated to more complex pictures. These days it’s not unusual to find me tackling a really complex puzzle, like an “Impossipuzzle” which are double-sided and feature a picture of something very small but in large quantities, like a plate of baked beans or loads of Brussels sprouts.
In my opinion as well as being an enjoyable pastime, jigsaw puzzles are good for your mind. The brain is basically just a muscle and so it should be given a work out every now and then. Jigsaw puzzles are challenging and although they are time consuming, they provide great satisfaction once you’ve finished one.

I’d really like to go to Paris again. I went to Paris once a number of years ago and loved it. We stayed near St.Michel, and saw all the usual sites, including Notre Dame Cathedral, which sadly burnt down only last year. The buildings are astounding, the architecture, the history, everything is so wonderful and romantic in Paris. If you do it this way you don’t get too tired, and you get to absorb and take in the art work that you see, rather than being totally overloaded with too much in one day. The one thing about the Louvre which is fantastic is the food courts! Really! The restaurants in the museum are absolutely fantastic – they serve an array of international foods of really high quality. It’s really an amazing way to relax after you’ve spent several hours walking around exhibits when you’re hungry and tired. You really work up an appetite when you’re on holiday, because of so much walking around and taking in new sites and new experiences. Not to mention trying to navigate in a different language. Id’ love to go back again, because there are also a lot of art galleries and small museums that we simply didn’t get enough time to see.

1. What’s the difference between the city and the countryside?
Well, there’s loads of differences. A key difference is the peace and quiet of the countryside compared to the noise, the hustle and bustle of the city. Secondly, and more obviously, cities are more developed and have way better facilities and are usually more international, whereas country places are more limited in these regards. You can’t explore international restaurants and enjoy good hospitals and sports facilities in the countryside like you can in the big cities!
2. Some people say that large cities are suitable for old people. What do you think of it?
In some ways, maybe. Some older people prefer to be in larger cities, just because that is what they are familiar with – also because they want better hospital facilities and transport facilities, which you don’t really get in the country towns. There are also a lot of older people who favour living in smaller towns because it’s more relaxing, more peaceful and much less noisy and bothersome. To some extent it depends on their personality and preferences.
3. Do you think it is possible that all the people should move to cities?
No not really. I think there are still a lot of people who enjoy country life, and especially farmers and people who work with the land and grow crops and raise cattle, their livelihood depends on living in the countryside. And many are happy with that if their businesses are going well enough.
4. Do you think people in the countryside are friendlier than people in the city?
To a great extent I think so. In country places everyone knows everyone so there tends to be more trust between people. They are often warmer and have more time for strangers or visitors, partly because they run on their own schedules and are not constricted by the working hours and office-lives of the city. Also life is less stressful in some ways, so people tend to be less competitive and therefore more open and friendly.

The place where I go where I can really relax is the local park. I am lucky enough to live really close to a nice park – in fact, it’s a great park – and it’s free to get in! Actually, I have a few paintings in my home. My girlfriend says it’s beginning to look like an art gallery! I guess you could call me a bit of an art-aholic, though I’m certainly no connoisseur.
By far my favourite piece is a large oil painting on canvas that I picked up on my travels in Bali. I had to roll it up to get it back to China and once I got home I had a bespoke frame made for it. It depicts a tree or plant of some sort, using an array of colours, from deep blues to vivid yellows. The image is very simple, being formed from a number of different coloured dots.
At the moment it is the centerpiece of my living room, takes pride of place on the main wall behind my sofa. There are other pieces of art in there, including some small statues and figurines, but they are eclipsed by the large oil painting, which truly dominates the room. Every guest we have visit passes comment on it, often complimenting its vibrant colours or simple aesthetic beauty.
For me personally, it’s a combination of all the things I have already mentioned. Plus, it reminds me of the places I have been and the things I have experienced on my trips abroad. The memories come flooding back every time l look at my picture. This is the primary reason I collect paintings and the reason I have more works of art than I do wall space!

Let’s just say, I was far from an angel at school. I guess I wasn’t that bad, but no one would call me a model student. There were a few subjects I really didn’t care for, but mainly it was Chinese.
I’ve obviously studied Chinese throughout my school life, but it was particularly excruciating during senior high-school, so when I was around 11 to 17 years old.
Wow, where do I start? Firstly, our teacher was awful. His name was Mr Zhang and he was a real old fuddy-duddy who would only teach from the textbook and regularly bored us to death. I couldn’t see a use for these things in modern life, they just didn’t seem practical.
As I got older and more mature, I started to respect Chinese more. I dug out some of my old textbooks and began flicking through them. Second time round they made more sense to me and I engaged with them a lot more.
Nowadays there is a greater interest in Chinese, with a variety of TV shows such as “Chengyu Yingxiong”, which means ‘Chengyu Hero’. These shows celebrate people’s knowledge of characters and in doing so celebrate our culture.

I’m a bit behind the times, so I think number one on my list of most wanted, indeed most needed equipment, is a smartphone.
I’m not sure exactly where to by my new toy. My current phone has been described as an ‘old man’s phone’. It basically only calls and sends text messages. My new smartphone will have a plethora of features, including a high-resolution camera and the ability to download a wide range of apps, like WeChat. It can also play movies, which will be especially useful when I’m trying to kill time on the subway on the way to work.
Really, the soon I buy a smartphone the better. It’s high time I was brought up to date, I don’t want to be one of those technophobes who is dragged kicking and screaming into the modern age. I’d also like to start using WeChat as everyone I know has it and I don’t want to get left behind or kept out of the loop.

I once read a piece of good news on the website of the New York Times. It was two years ago, I was still a journalism student and one of my tutors assigned me to do a presentation for my news-gathering course. The time limit was five minutes and it was supposed to be a critique, i.e., stating clearly what was good and bad about the story.
So I started preparing for my assignment. I was skimming through pages and clicking around when this article caught my eye. Basically, it was about a high school student who got bullied because he stuttered. The news story was a good one because it wasn’t what I expected it to be — a one-sided story that went on about the poor boy.
This piece was actually rather fair and balanced. It tried to show the readers what had happened to the stutterer and they gave the alleged bullies a chance to give their side of the story. From the journalistic perspective, it was a neat one.
