Describe a challenging experience you had

You should say:

What experience it was;

When you had it;

Why it was challenging;

And explain how you felt about it.

Talking about the most challenging as well as the most impressive experience in last two years, I would definitely say that it was keeping two parrots at home. My brother gave me two parrots (they should be called Budgerigar) as a surprise gift when my summer vacation began in last year. At first, I was overjoyed when hearing that I need to shoulder the whole responsibility to take care of them. In the following several days, I searched much information on the Internet to get to know its food list, living habits and behaviours, even the possible symptoms of getting ill. Then I bought them a nice and bigger cage as their “luxury flat” to offer them more space for activities. Preparing daily food and water, talking to them and observing them, I patiently did all what I could do to fully shoulder the responsibility as their owner.

As I said it was very challenging because I found it was so hard to keep two LITTLE things! I need to pay great attention, efforts and patience to complete the daily feeding and cleaning, which was more challenging than the daily tasks in online games. Moreover, my nice talking and observing couldn’t do any help to train them to listen to me, even be a little bit friendly to me! I thought the training to birds was so a piece of cake before keeping them. When I approached them more closer than usual, they would flapped their wings and flew around the whole cage, even pecked me badly. As for the most important point, they could be making noises all the time during the day. It was a period when I didn’t feel like hearing any bird songs, so-called “birds’ singing”. It was a great sense of helplessness when my passion met with my frustration in keeping them, especially when I found what could I do was only to deal with their dropping waste and the falling-out feathers. Finally I realized that keeping pets is a thing that “Love me much (not little), love me longer”. Taking the responsibility for your pet is much more challenging than saying that. You have to think carefully before having a plan to keep a pet. Last but not the least, you need to take care of it throughout its whole life to experience what responsibility is.

would like to talk about the time I first moved to Changsha for college. It’s one of the major changes in my life till now I have to say.

Firstly, I was born in the north of China. We have drier winter, while Changsha, which is a southern city is probably the most humid city in the world. The constant rain is killing me. And the food in Changsha is too spicy and salty for me. I am not used to having too many spices and chili in the food. Also, I can’t really understand the local language.

Besides, college study is totally different from high school study, including in study methods and subjects. For example, you don’t have anyone to supervise you or motivate you on your own things. You can only rely on yourself.

Another significant change for me is the living environment. I used to live with my parents and have my own room, while in college, I have to live with 5 other girls in a small dormitory. We even don’t have a private bathroom. It’s utterly inconvenient when you have to share the bathroom with so many other people, like more than 70 people.

To conclude, I am still adapting myself to the new environment and the new life. Like people always say, we’ll have to embrace the change.

Describe a difficult challenge you met

You should say:

What it was

When and where it happened

What you did

And explain why you think it is a challenge

My experience of trying to win a prize in a chess competition for amateurs(业余人士) could be a perfect story for this topic. I think it’s a challenge for me, because when playing chess, you have to plan every of your moves ahead, and pay attention to not only your own pieces(棋子)and moves, but that of the other player.

And also, it is a small life goal for me. Shameless to say this, but in my life, I have won some prizes, but most of them are in the academic field, just 1 or 2 out of them are music-related. Somehow, I’m just more academically inclined(偏学术). So, I was thinking about to win another prize in a field that I am not so familiar with. I know chances are slim(希望渺茫), because I was just a beginner in chess-playing. But anyways, it never hurt to give it a shot(尝试), right?

As a beginner, I luckily fight to the final, but didn’t come out on top in the end. I still remember, I just slept 4hours the night before the final, because I am so nervous that I suffered from insomnia(失眠). That was why I drank a cup of coffee to refresh myself the next morning. At the first 20 minutes of the game, I was actually the one on the win side, because I took most of the competitor’s pieces off the chessboard. But unexpectedly, he just somehow turned the table(扭转局势,反败为胜) and checkmated(将军) me with a little pawn.

Although I didn’t fulfill my goal, I still learned a lot from this experience. I think the world was just like a big chessboard, on which all of us were little pieces. Some of us are born to be the king or queen, while others may be little pawns standing at the corner of the chessboard, just like you and me. But even a little pawn stands a chance(有机会)of winning.

A difficult time you went through

One of the most important times in my life, as it is in almost everyone’s life, was when I was sixteen.

I was in high school in Beijing. I was a kind of a shy teenager and only had one friend. We were very close and did everything together. We would often go to each other’s house for sleep overs, and would stay up late at night chatting about everything two children could ever chat about. We were best of friends until one day when we had a terrible misunderstanding. She thought I had told someone a secret that she had told me, and she decided not to be my friend anymore. She made a new best friend and would strut around with her trying to make me jealous. She would gossip with all the other kids about me. I suddenly became an outcast at school, and thus, became utterly lonely and depressed. I thought there was something seriously wrong with me.

It was not until I talked with my cousin about my situation, that I realized it was not me that had a problem but her. I also began to understand that you can not take what others say and do so close to heart, or you will always feel bad about yourself, and will never be able to live your life. I also realized that bad things happen in life, and you can not hide from them; or dig yourself into a hole. I eventually found a new best friend, whom I am still friends with today. I have a more open personality, and I am one of the top students in my college. I believe that situation made me a stronger person. I can handle rejection now wherever it comes from, and just keep rolling with a smile on my face.

Describe something important you once forgot to do.

You should say:

what you forgot;

when and where this happened;

why you forgot it;

and explain what the result of your forgetting was.

There was a time that I forgot my camera on the train.

It was about two months ago when I was on my way back from Sanya, a beautiful place where I just had my summer trip. I was quite drowsy when the train arrived at my station. When I heard the train announcement, I quickly grabbed my backpack which was placed on the luggage rack above my head, and got off in a hurry. On my way to the taxi stand, I had this gut feeling that something wasn’t right. All of a sudden, I realized I‘d left my camera on the seat. By the time I rushed back, the train had already left. The result was that I lost it, my beloved camera.

beloved:[only before noun] loved very much

beloved by/of somebody loved very much by somebody; very popular with somebody

I felt so sad, you know, for a second, I really wanted to stick my head into the oven. I couldn’t stop blaming myself for over a month. One of the most obvious consequences was definitely the monetary value. The camera was a state of the art SLR from Canon, I mean, a real pro one. It cost me a fortune. And having lost it meant I had to save for a really long time to get a decent replacement.

Besides, it was not just the monetary value of the camera I cared about, it was also the memories the camera stored. There were so many beautiful photos that the camera captured, like the one I took of the sunset on the mountain, and the one of the rope and chain bridge in the wind. What was worse, I hadn’t got time to transfer the photos of that trip to my computer yet. I lost everything.

This devastating experience told me a lesson – never leave important things unattended. I seriously hope I’ll never be this reckless again.

THE morning sunlight, the panorama from the Shwethaung pagoda, on the highest hill in Mrauk-u, looked magical: lush rice paddy, sparkling lakes and wooded hills, many topped by other glinting gilt pagodas. But in one spot, black smoke was billowing. Another village was burning. From October 22nd-24th Mrauk-u, a tourist centre in Rakhine state in Myanmar, and former capital of the independent kingdom of Arakan, turned into a war zone.

Below the pagoda a spontaneous, medieval army was massing. Hundreds of young men were on the march: packed on the backs of pickups, on motorcycles, on trishaws, tuk-tuks and bicycles, but mostly on foot. They carried spears, swords, cleavers, bamboo staves, slingshots, crossbows and the occasional petrol bomb. Violence between the Buddhist majority and the mostly Muslim Rohingya minority has wracked Rakhine since June. These were angry Buddhists seeking to avenge the deaths of three of their kin, killed, they said, by Muslims. One tugged at an imaginary beard and made a grisly throat-cutting gesture.

days the trouble had spread across Rakhine, a strip of Myanmar's western coastline that borders Bangladesh in the north. The government reported 82 killed, 4,600 houses burned and more than 22,000 people displaced―all almost certainly underestimates. Satellite imagery shows the utter destruction of a Muslim quarter of the coastal town of Kyaukphyu, from where oil-and-gas pipelines are to cross Myanmar to China.

Many of its residents had fled by sea for the state capital, Sittwe, to join some 75,000 others, mostly Rohingyas, who have been confined to squalid camps since June, when the conflict flared up after the rape and murder of a Buddhist woman. A state of emergency was imposed. Sittwe has been under curfew ever since, as now are some other parts of Rakhine. Some blame the central government for fuelling the violence: some ministers made inflammatory statements, perhaps hoping to derail Myanmar's democratic reforms. The need to contain ethnic strife and separatism was long used to justify the army's 50-year dictatorship. Some must mourn its passing.

雅思口语难题 --Describe a time that you forget something important; 遗忘,很抽象的题目

Describe a timethat you forget something important;

You should say:

When thishappened;

What you forgotto do ;

Who you werewith;

And whatconsequences you faced;

Well, what I’vedecided to talk about is the time I forgot to wish happy birthday toone of my friends, which I feel really bad about, not leastbecause he always remembers my birthday.

Anyway, as for when this happened, well I suppose it must have been about threeor four weeks ago, so it wasn’t all that long ago. And basically whathappened was that I was in the middle of preparing for my universityexams, so I had quite a lot on my mind, as you can probably imagine. Andit was only when my friend texted me a few days later that I suddenlyremembered it was his birthday. So I called him straight away and wished him abelated happy birthday, coz you know, “better late than never”!And hewas really good about it, you know, he told me not to worry, and said that birthdaysare no big deal, so he wasn’t fussed about it. But as I said earlier, Istill felt pretty bad about it, and so I told him I’d try to make it up tohim somehow. So yeah, I guess that’s pretty much all there is to sayreally, and hopefully in the future, I’ll get better at rememberingpeoples’ birthdays!

Describe a favorite song of yours

You should say:

What this song is about

When you listened to this song for the first time

How often you listen to this song

And explain why you think it is your favorite

A favorite song of mine is Pengyou, which is from Zhou Huajian, who was a very well-known Chinese singer in the 90s and still is. This song is all about friendship. Just like the lyrics said, friends, we walk together always.

I can’t remember when I listened to this song for the first time. It was definitely very long time ago, maybe when I was in the primary school? The moment I heard the song, I was kind of fascinated by the rhythm and the lyrics. Never had I heard such a pure and positive song at that time. Another song that also made me feel good was called TONGYISHOUGE, but you know it’s not as perfect as this one in my mind.

During the preparation for the college entrance exam, I got extremely stressful because of the burden I had from both of my family and my peers. It was this song that really helped me stick to it. This article is from Laokaoya website. Do not copy or repost it. So, I think the reason why I love this song so much is that this song teaches how to become positive and let me know that I was not alone, I’ve got my friends who would stand by my side always.

Right now, we have so many young and talented pop song singers in China, like TFBoys. But, I still can’t forget those days when I listened to this song and regarded it as a soul companion of mine.

Part 3

Why do you think pop music is so popular?

What kinds of songs do elders prefer?

Why is square dancing music so loud?

Sample answer:

In my mind, there is a song I particularly enjoy and it means a lot to me, whose name is the girl next to me. It is a folk song(民谣) sung by Laolang, a famous folk singer in my country popular in young Chinese people in particular, young college students. The singer expresses his missing to the girl sitting at same table of him in his school time. I heard it on a music website for the first time several years ago when I was in my dormitory. I was impressed by the beautiful melody(旋律) and the touching lyrics(歌词) and it is not surprising that the song is very prevalent(流行的) among the young college students like me on campus.

Each time I hear the melody,I will think of the lovely face of my desk mate ,a lovely girl ,in my high school, especially her sweet smile and her limpid(清澈的 )eyes. We have pure friendship then, and we often helped each other. She taught me English and I was better in math. We have much happy time together. After graduating from high school, we separated and communicated with each other once in a while. I wish I can sing the song with her if I have an opportunity and I believe It will be touching picture.

music changed over the years?

Topic:

Describe your favourite season or time of the year.

You should say:

when that season is

what the weather is like at that time of year

and explain why it is your favourite season.

Sample answer 1:

My favourite season in England is winter. A typical English winter would last around 4 or 5 months between November and March, but when I say that I like the winter, I’m really thinking about the coldest month or two each year.

During those really wintry (寒冷)months, the temperature drops below zero and it often snows.

Over the last few years we’ve had periods of quite heavy snowfall, to the extent that roads have been blocked and schools have had to close. Last winter I remember looking out of the window one morning and seeing everything covered in a layer of(一层) white.

Obviously the snow is what differentiates winter from the other seasons, but when it doesn’t snow there isn’t much difference between winter, autumn and spring; winter is just a bit colder.

The reason I’ve chosen winter as my favourite season is because I like the snow. I live near the countryside, and the landscape(景观) looks beautiful when everything is covered in white. We also celebrate Christmas and New Year in the winter, and these are my favourite festivals.

Sample answer 2:

Well, I love Fall and Winter but Spring is the season I love most from my own experiences. Spring marks a transition(过渡) from Winter and Summer, so it’s normally(正常地) start from February and last to April, however it might change a little bit depend on climate on that year.

Spring is really nice to me with temperate weather, not too hot or too cold. The average temperature is about over 20 Celsius, it’s very ideal(理想的) in tropical country like Vietnam(越南). Air is very fresh with the smell of grass and new born trees and flowers.

In my opinion, the rain make Spring become very special, compare to other seasons. Because it rain all the time on Summer, Fall and Winter, people have to bring raincoat follow. In addition to this, it’s extremely(极其) hot in summer make me feel that I can not live in places without air-conditioner. However, it’s dry in Spring and nice weather allows people enjoy long trip or picnic, outdoor party.

And the reason why I love Spring. Many people say that Spring is time for re-birth, re-growth and renewal and that make me feel very comfortable with bird singing and flower everywhere. For me, it gives me hope for a brighter future. Spring is a time for Tet Holiday, it’s the most important festival in my country, it’s also Reunion Festival, people from city or foreign will back to hometown to visit their family and relatives.

Describe your favorite season of the year

You should say:

How is the weather like

Why do you like this season

What activities do you usually do during it

How would different kinds of weather affect people

My favorite season in Canada is summer. The real summer in Canada lasts only two months, July and August. During these two months, the temperature climbs above 20 and it's always sunny. The trees become green again and the whole city is full of various flowers. Day time is longer and night time is shorter. Most time we have sunlight until 10 in the evening.

The reason that I like summer is because summer time is the best season for outdoor activities. I love hiking, jogging, and biking. I can go to national parks or city parks easily in summer. Summer gives me so much fun.

Just like what I've said, I love hiking, jogging, and biking in summer. I still remember I went to different national parks last summer for hiking. I saw beautiful lakes and mountains. I even encountered a bear looking for food, which was pretty amazing experience.

Weather may affect people' choice of activities. It's warm outside in summer, so more people will choose outdoor activities. We always have more music festivals or food festivals in summer. Winter is super cold in Canada. People would like to stay home instead of going outside.

I really enjoy the warm weather because it’s the perfect atmosphere to do outdoor activities. My favorite part about summer has to be the fact that school is closed for two months. During summer, you’re free to do whatever you want, not worrying about curfew or waking up early for school. Summer time is a great time to relax with friends and family by soaking up the sun at a beach or simply having dinner together.

(Describe a toy that you received when you were a child)

When I was a child, I received a Barbie doll as a gift from my father's friend. He bought the toy from the States.

I played with this Barbie doll almost every day. I begged my grandma to make clothes for her and dressed her like a princess or a super star. She was my favorite toy for a long time. I always put her besides my pillow.

I felt super happy when I received this Barbie doll. The doll had long hair, big eyes, and beautiful skirt. When I was a child, Barbie doll was very expensive and my parents couldn't afford to buy it, so Barbie doll had been a dream gift for me. To some extent, receiving the doll was a dream coming true. I saw it as a valuable gift and tried to keep it in a good shape. I also felt thankful for my father's friend who brought this happiness to me.

You should say:

when and where the incident you remember happened

who you were with

what happened exactly

and explain why it is a happy memory.

I grew up very far from most of my family so I only saw them once a year. Every summer I would go to stay with them, while my parents continued working. Although I missed my parents, I used to really enjoy spending time with my grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles. I spent all summer there, nearly two whole months, so from time to time my cousins and I would get bored. We would ask my grandparents if they had any ideas for interesting things we could do. Sometimes they suggested going for a bike ride, sometimes into town to do some shopping. At other times, they showed us a new game to play. Then we were happy again.

One day - it must be about 12 years ago (doesn't time fly!) - all of us got really, really bored and we kept complaining to my grandparents. They were tearing their hair out, trying to think up ideas of where we could go and what we could do. Suddenly, my granddad came up with the idea of going to a new water park that had opened that summer. I hadn't heard about it but my cousins had, and they told me all about it. It was a park with vast numbers of different pools, some inside, some outside. There were water slides as well. And, on top of there was not one, but two playgrounds with swings, a merry-go-round, see-saws. We were so excited.

We set off and on the way we were all singing songs and laughing. We couldn't wait to get there. When we arrived, my cousins and I ran into the park and changed into our swimming costumes. Then we went looking for the most exciting-looking pool, and we found it, one with brightly coloured tiles and slides, we jumped straight in. We played all day in the park and had a lovely lunch, sat on some benches in the sunshine.

My granddad loved a pool that was filled with spa water. It was dark brown and stank of rotten eggs. I didn't want to go in but he eventually convinced me. I'm pleased he did because the water was really warm. I'd never swam in water that warm. I didn't want to get out, despite the terrible smell.

I consider it such a happy memory because we enjoyed ourselves so much and I remember so vividly how I felt that day. But there's more to it than just that. When I look back now, I understand how caring my grandparents were and how much they wanted us all to be happy. They would have done anything to help us have a good time. I appreciate that more now that I'm older and have children of my own. I hope we thanked them; I can't remember. But, anyway, they were content, I'm sure, to just watch us have an amazing time, playing and laughing in the water. So, as you can see, it was a wonderful day and is one of my favourite childhood memories.

Duck, duck, goose

You're it.

Musical chair 抢椅子 When the music stops, you have to rush for the chairs.

When it comes to my favorite childhood game, I’d like to introduce the game called “Hide and seek”.

What we will need for this game is enough space for some excitable kids, like squares or the like, as well as a handkerchief or the like for covering eyes for a seeker.

Before the start, prepare a handkerchief, and then someone was elected as the seeker. When the game starts, the person who is seeker counts to 20~30 or more,(you could decide it yourselves),at the same time the rest run to hide. After the person who is IT says “Ready or not here I come”. Then he tries to find the others. As you can probably guess, the person who is found, he or she will be the next person who is a seeker.

例如:Where is the book?(这本书在哪儿?)很少有人说What is a book?(书是什么?)而美国的小学生就开始问:What is the book?这种Where is the book? What is a book?

How to explain things in different ways?(用不同的方式解释同一事物)。

比如,I love you. I want to kiss you, I want to hug you, I will show my heart to you.

Topic

Describe a restaurant you know

You should say:

where this restaurant is

what type of food the restaurant serves

and explain why you would recommend this restaurant.

Tips

但重点是说明题目中why you would recommend this restaurant。

Sample answer

Thank you very much for giving me the chance to talk about my favourite restaurant. The name of my favourite restaurant is (say the name of the restaurant you are going to talk about) and it’s situated at the centre of the city I am currently living in. Not only I like the spacious, serene environment, tasty menus that the restaurant serves, but I have lots of memories related to this restaurant. I remember that my parents celebrated some of my birthday parties there, our college friends arranged the get-together parties, one of my cousins’ marriage ceremony was celebrated there and similarly I attended lots of other parties at this very restaurant.

The restaurant has 3 floors and the sitting arrangement is quite nice. Paintings of famous artists have been hanging on the walls and the place is quite neat and clean. The interior decoration is charming and gorgeous feeling. The ground floor is spacious and can accommodate more than 50 cars' parking. The front view of the restaurant is different as the place gives the impression of an urban garden.

The restaurant offers several dishes including exotic deserts, ice-creams and also offers a separate place for the kids to play and have fun. The prices are reasonable and the foods are served quickly as opposed to some other restaurants where you will have to wait for a long for your foods to appear on your table. The waiters and other staffs are friendly and welcoming. The restaurant offers Chinese, Italian, Indian, Thai, Pakistani and local menus that gives you a wide ranges and options to pick from. The soft background music and instrumentals make the environment more enjoyable and soothing. The tables are not congested and people can chat over their personal topics without interruption. The long glass made windows offer the city view which makes the place worth visiting besides the delicious foods. The place must be a good place to be as I often found the foreign tourists visiting the restaurant. The authority lets the customers provide their feedbacks and comments on foods and the place and as I have noticed they take prompt action on a customer complaint.

In short, this is a really nice restaurant to go and enjoy the delicious meals.

I’d like to talk about a western restaurant called Art Steak. It’s just 5 minutes’ walk from my school, so my friends and I used to hang out in this restaurant after school, or during lunch break.

The food they provide is really authentic, like the steak, spaghetti, French fries and things like that, especially the coffee, I don’t drink coffee, but I was told it was super great, you know, with a full mellow flavor, coz I heard the owner of the shop is Italian.

I like the interior design of the restaurant, very chic and comfortable. The most impressive thing about this restaurant is the bathroom, I know it sounds a little weird, but to me, the sanitary condition of the bathroom is a vital criterion when I judge whether a restaurant is a good one or not.

On top of all that, the service I received was impeccable. All the waiters and waitresses are so good-looking. And their uniforms fit them so well. It’s just a feast for the eyes to eat there. And they always put a friendly, pleasant smile on their face. I was always in a good mood when I was there.

Describe a restaurant or café. You should say:

Where it is.

What it looks like.

What kinds of services are provided?

What kind of food you like there.

Why you like it.

Thank you for the opportunity to speak to you. I am sure you will find my talk interesting and informative.

1. Of all the restaurants I could tell you about, the Smiling Dragon restaurant is probably the one that I would like to talk about the most.

2. The reason for my latest visit there has to do with the fact that I wanted to introduce my foreign English teacher to some Chinese dishes.

3. The Smiling Dragon is well known for its seafood dishes. I would mention the bakes fish and fresh squid.

I always enjoy a visit the Smiling Dragon for a number of reasons. Please allow me to explain by mentioning some of them briefly.

4. Firstly, the food is of a good quality and well prepared. For example, they prepare only fresh fish, which they purchase at the fish market in Dalian.

5. Secondly, the waiting staff is always friendly, polite, and helpful. What I mean to say is that they will advise you on any specials on offer, and they tend to any need you may have swiftly and efficiently.

6. Thirdly, the restaurant is always spotlessly clean. Therefore, I never feel embarrassed to invite my family, friends, or foreigners to join me there for a meal.

7. Lastly, it is situated conveniently near the university, in a respectable neighborhood. That means that I am able to take my girlfriend there after dark, without fearing that we will be in danger on our way there and back.

1. Are there many restaurants near your home/school/university/work?

Yes there are many different restaurants and other places to but cooked food. The great thing about my neighborhood is that you can eat almost any good you like because there’re so many different foods on offer. There’s a very popular Sichuan restaurant near my work that’s always crowded with people who enjoy hot and spicy food. That’s not really my thing, so I prefer to eat at a place that specializes in noodles. It’s always a challenge trying to eat a bowl of noodles without making a mess on my clothes, but after eating some I always feel happy. In fact, there are so many places to eat near my home that I haven’t been to them all yet. I’m looking forward to trying out all the different types of food they have.

2. What different types of restaurants are there in your hometown?

My hometown is in England, so obviously the types of restaurants they have there are very different from in China. Back in England a lot of restaurants are also pubs, where you can drink beer, wine and other alcoholic beverages as well as enjoy a meal. The food in places like this is called ‘pub food’ and it usually simple, tasty and filling. Of course there are also ‘proper’ restaurants that serve all sorts of food. There are many foreign restaurants that serve Indian, Chinese, Japanese and Spanish food. England isn’t known for its delicious cooking, so we eat a lot of foreign dishes.

3. What are some of the factors that make a restaurant a good one?

When eating at a restaurant you should always feel relaxed and comfortable. The French believe that unless this is the case you will have bad digestion. Therefore it’s important for a restaurant to be a pleasant place to enjoy a meal. It helps to have a little music playing, but nothing too loud or fast-paced. Excellent service is a must in my opinion. If you have to wait for ages before your food arrives then it’s very annoying. The staff must be friendly and polite and have a good knowledge of the food on offer so they can make recommendations, and of course, the food itself should be tasty. Finally, it helps if the price is low, but if a restaurant is really good then they will of course charge a little more money.

4. Does the food in the restaurant you just talked about taste different to Western food?

Yes, very different. Even the food that you would expect to taste the same as western food, like bread, tastes strange to a westerner. Chinese bread is very sweet and floury whilst western bread is more coarse and heavy. In general Chinese food is a lot more oily and spicy too. This can be a surprise to someone who orders a dish and then discovers that it’s too hot to eat! In the west most spicy dishes are Indian curries and hot food is not that common. I think Chinese meat is absolutely delicious though because it’s cooked in small pieces you can pick up with chopsticks. This gives it a more tender flavor.

Describe an achievement that you are proud of

You should say:

What it was

How it was made

What difficulties have you encountered during the process

Why you are proud of this achievement

Well, it's probably difficult to believe but last year I knocked off X kilos in about 6 months, and this is what I am still enormously proud of. I have to confess...I used to be a very lazy girl who loved fast food and hated sports. And at that time I was so slim that I didn't even think that one day being overweight would become my number 1 problem. So when I realised that I'd put on X kilos, I decided to lose weight and get fit, no matter what.

And so it began. I started exercising daily. I went jogging in the mornings and I walked in the evenings. Also, I ditched junk food and stopped buying snacks, which I couldn't live without. I started sticking to a diet. You know, no sweets, no rice, no cheeseburgers, and French fries. Not only salads, vegetables, fruits and plenty of fluids. I ate only healthy food and drank a lot of water daily. I cooked foods in healthier ways such as boiling, baking and stewing. I read somewhere that it is better to have a few light meals instead of on main meal. So I followed this advice too. I continued this practice for six straight months. As a result, I lost more than X kilograms.

Now I'm not only as slim as I used to be, but I'm also fit enough. And I'm genuinely proud of my achievement. I should say it was hard to change my habits, my diet and my lifestyle, and at some point I was about to give up because all those activities were really time consuming. But I didn't, thank God, though I was facing a lot of difficulties. Another thing that makes me feel inordinately proud of myself is that I achieved great results without anybody's help. I just read blogs and forums, used a lot of online resources, but it was I that decided what to do with myself. This is something I never thought I could do. You can't even imagine how much effort I put in achieving this result. I would even say I was fighting the battle of my life. And I won.

describe a success in your life

Well, the success I’m going to talk about might not sound as impressive as the ones other candidates have told you, but it really means lot to me, and many of friends call it “an inspirational story”.

So here’s my story. I wasn’t always like this. I used to be a lot bigger when I was in junior high school. But it didn’t bother me back then because I was a big foodie and all I cared about was if there’s palatable food on my dinner table.

I didn’t know anything about beauty and health until I went to high school. It was like, all of a sudden, everybody started to pay attention to their appearance, and according to the common aesthetic standards, only slim girls are considered to be attractive.

And you know how mean some high school students can be, right? When people started to make jokes about me and give me nicknames like “little big” or “fatty”, I just started to become self-conscious about my weight.

For the record, I’m not a shallow person, but those personal remarks could really get to me.

And it was not just that, my weight had seriously affected my health.

I remember I always felt embarrassed in PE class because I usually couldn’t catch my breath after just a little warming up.

So I told myself, it has to change. I consulted some professionals, and got myself a gym membership card, hired a personal trainer, and started to go on a diet. I kissed goodbye to my favorite chocolate and other high calorie food.

It was not easy at first, but I made it at last! After a year’s hard work, I lost more than 30 pounds. And I manage to stay that weight till today.

Well I am going to talk about a good suggestion that one of my leaders told me when I worked as an intern teacher in the last summer holiday. Back then I just got back home from school and I got an internship in a language training school. I was supposed to teach children aged from 5 to 10 some easy English lessons and I needed to report their studying feedbacks to their parents. Since I did not have any teaching experience, I felt very nervous. I was so afraid that these children would not like me and their parents would consider me too young to do the job. When I made phone calls to these parents, I had to prepare every line I was supposed to say in advance or I would be too nervous to talk naturally. My manager saw how anxious I was and she told me “never fear for what have not happened and don’t always prepare for the worst”.

After pondering over her words, I felt that I should be more optimistic. Sometimes we are so seized by fear that we are totally trapped in this kind of emotion. We couldn’t think and we couldn’t act normally. So after hearing the suggestion she offered to me, I determined to put aside all these worries and just did my best. My efforts were well paid off and these children and their parents liked me.

In our life we often give advises to others in times when we feel that’s necessary. This is a basic human nature to give advices and share thoughts with others. I gave many advises to others, mostly to my friends and relatives, and one such advise I still remember and feel good about was the one that I gave to one of my classmates when I was in the college.

I advised him to continue his study no matter what. The friend whom I gave advice was (…say a name…) and I talked to him for more than 3 hours. He one day told me that he had been planning to quit the college and get involve in some kind of job to support his family. That was in my opinion a very wrong decision as it would ruin every possibility he has in his career and he would have to work on low level jobs for the rest of his life. I advised him not to drop out from the college and study hard. I showed him some of the examples where others are supporting their family even after continuing their study. I told him that it would be very tough and sometimes you would feel like abandoning the college but don’t even think of doing it. I also advised him to manage any part time job in local library or to talk to our teacher about his condition.

After few days, he told me that he had given some serious thought about it and won’t quit the college. I felt overwhelmed and happy to hear that. He talked to our course teachers and one of the teachers arranged him a part time job. He was happy and he finally finished his graduation from one of the prestigious universities of our country. Now he is working in a respectable government office and he is still grateful to me for the advice I gave him. I felt very well when I found him continuing his study and in fact he was a bright student. I still feel very glad to be able to give him an advice that proved to be very helpful for him.

what the advice was

in what situation you received this advice

who gave you the advice

and explain why you thought this advice was good.

what the advice was

The most important advice I received in my life was: “Know yourself”. Quite a simple one but, it means much more to me than it sounds.

in what situation you received this advice

During a certain period in my early 20's, I was extremely arrogant. Every time I assumed I would be successful, I would get whatever I wanted. I didn't respect people around me, and even my arrogance came out in every speech I made.

who gave you the advice

Mom thought I was full of myself, irritating. She once told me to “know yourself”! Mom said it's inscribed on the front of the temple of Apollo. And entire quote is “know thyself, and you shall know all the mysteries of the gods and of the universe.” That's quite a mouthful. Her version is this. “Know yourself because what else is there to know?”

and explain why you thought this advice was good.

As a child, we don't always realize that parents tell us what to do out of love. I discovered that she was right after awhile. To get a thorough understanding of oneself is to gain a correct view of oneself and be a sober realist -- aware of both one's strength and shortage. You may look forward hopefully to the future but be sure not to expect too much. I think feeling small is the first step to knowing yourself. Being silent is the second. I think we are afraid of silence because we don't want to be small. If we are too silent, we might slow down enough to recognize that something much deeper, much larger, and much more ancient than us is slowly trying to tell us something. And that's scary. But I think it's worth a try. Maybe it will tell us who we are. That's to way so long as you have a perfect knowledge of yourself there won't be difficulties you can't overcome, nor obstacles you can't surmount.
