Read this:

If the Deposit is not paid, the Seller has the right to rescind this Agreement by a notice in writing to the Purchaser delivered within 30 days from the date of this Agreement, provided that such rescission right shall not be effective unless and until the Seller does not rescind the Preliminary Agreement for the Property.

Got it? If not, feel free to read it again. And again… and probably again.

Got it now? Perhaps you should read it once more just to double check.

No doubt you’re having trouble with this part: “…shall not be effective unless and until the Seller does not rescind…”

I think you’ll agree that the difficulty is mainly due to the use of multiple negatives – “shall not”, “unless” and “does not”. It’s more of a brain teaser than a practical piece of communication. Unfortunately most of us don’t have the time or inclination to work out brain teasers.

So – my advice is simple: Don’t use multiple negatives. Write something like this instead:

If the Deposit is not paid, the Seller has the right to rescind this Agreement by written notice to the Purchaser delivered within 30 days of the date of this Agreement. However, the rescission right is not effective if the Seller has rescinded the Preliminary Agreement for the Property.

I know I’m taking something of a risk pretending I’ve understood the original correctly, but I’m willing to do so. If my interpretation is wrong, far from showing my lack of intelligence, it proves how bad the writer is at communicating.

In case I haven’t convinced you that multiple negatives are a bad idea, here are a few more brain teasers for you to waste your time on:

The following actions are not excluded from the prohibition.

No termination will be approved unless the administrator reviews the application and finds that it is not lacking in any requisite materials.

Deciding to rescind the earlier estimate, our report was updated to include $40,000 for new equipment. Deciding to rescind our earlier estimate, we have updated our report to include $40,000 for new equipment.

He decided not to audit the last ten contracts. Because of our previous objections about compliance. He decided not to audit the last ten contracts because of our previous objections about compliance.

The owner questioned the occupant's lease intentions and the fact that the contract had been altered with ink markings. The owner questioned the occupant's lease intentions and ink alterations of the contract.

An authorized person must show that they have security clearance. Authorized persons must show that they have security clearance.

1. This is one of the public-relations functions that is under-budgeted. 2. This is one of the public-relations functions, which are under-budgeted.

He did not make repairs, however, he continued to monitor the equipment. He did not make repairs; however, he continued to monitor the equipment.

MUST change to OS immediately.

Jim

Could you please contact Cooway to organize a team-building event for sales staff? There would be ten participants and the course should last for two days. I suggest the weekend of 24/25 November or, if that is not possible, the following weekend.

Thank, Alan

To: Head Office staff

From: Tom Beck

I have the pleasure of announcing that Ms Sally Jolie has been appointed as the new Sales Manager at Head Office. Ms Jolie is due to join us on Monday 15th. Please give her a friendly welcome when she starts work.

Thank you.

The two bar charts illustrate the changes in the wheat production and the average prices between 1990 and in a European country.

The first chart reveals that the decade saw a sharp increase in the production. In 1990 the European country output approximately 0.8 millions of tonnes. Till 2000 the figure peaked at about 2.4 million, a three time jump.

According to the second chart, the wheat prices dramatically surged from less than 1500 Pound Sterling per tonne in 1990 to almost 3000 in 1995. Nevertheless, in the following five years, the changes in prices were featured by decrease. By 2000, the prices had dropped to 2,200 pound sterling.

Obviously, the changes in the production were not the same as those in the prices during the ten years.

Bristol factories, with 600 employees in , generated the largest profits in each quarter during 2003. But the profits reduced from £12 million in the first quarter to about £8.2 million in the fourth.

London factories, by contrast, contributed the least in the whole year. Although the profits slightly climbed in the second quarter, they declined in the following periods. The highest profits in the second quarter reached £4.1 million.

The profits produced by the Leeds factories were relatively stable in that only in the third quarter did the profits dropped by one million pound sterling to the bottom of £7million . The other three quarters saw the same profits.

Noticeably, the number of employees in Leeds was 350, compared with 150 in London.

Introduction

The purpose of this report is to compare the turnover for three outlets in a company from 2000 to .

Supermarkets were always the largest turnover contributor.

If you don’t know the name of the person you are writing to, start business emails with either of the following:

Dear Sir,/Dear Madam,

Dear Madame, is wrong.

If you don’t know whether you’re writing to a man or a woman use:

Dear Sir or Madam,

It is not usual to start an email To whom it may concern. This should be reserved for letters of reference or similar communications when the recipient is an unknown third party.

It is always better to use somebody’s name if you know it. If it is the first time you are writing to someone, use either of the following:

For men: Dear Mr XXXX,

For women: Dear Ms XXXX,

Once you get to know someone, i.e. after exchanging one or two emails or if you meet them in person, it is usually OK to use their first name.

Use Dear Sirs, if you are writing to more than one person even if the group of people includes women.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, is wrong. “Ladies and Gentleman” is only used in formal speech.

The word Dear may be omitted in less formal emails. Instead, you may just open with the person’s first name/people’s first names.

Here are some example closing sentences for emails:
