1:Far from viewing Jefferson as a skeptical but enlightened intellectual, historians of the 1960’s portrayed him as ______ thinker, eager to fill the young with his political orthodoxy while censoring ideas he did not like.
an adventurous
a doctrinaire
an eclectic
a judicious
a cynical
2:A restaurant’s menu is generally reflected in its décor; however, despite this restaurant’s ______ appearance it is pedestrian in the menu it offers.
A. elegant B. tawdry C. modern D. traditional E. conventional F. chic
3:There has been much hand-writing about how unprepared American students are for college. Graff reverses this perspective, suggesting that colleges are unprepared for students. In his analysis, the university culture is largely (i)______ entering students because academic culture fails to make connections to the kinds of arguments and cultural references that students grasp. Understandably, many students view academic life as (ii)______ ritual.
Blank (i)
primed for
opaque to
essential for
Blank (ii)
an arcane
a laudable
painstaking
空格(i)可以通过第一、二句话的描述来进行推断,同时也可以用 “because academic culture fails to make connections to the kinds of arguments and cultural references that students grasp”进行推断,表示的是对学生来说“unprepared”的意思,即负面的评价,所以答案为“opaque to”。同理,空格(ii)也要表明学生对学术生活“不理解”的态度,因此答案为“an arcane(known or knowable only to the initiate)”。
例4:Most artists maintain an attitude of (i)______ toward their own work. They know, better than any critic would know, how their art (ii)______ their ambitions. The artist would demand of his admirer, Do you really think this is the best I am capable of? Henri Cartier-Bresson’s dismissal of his life’s work in photography, however, is (iii)______: it seems almost contempt, or even hatred, not just for his achievement but for the medium itself.
Blank (i)
extraordinary hubris
irremediable disdain;
healthy disrespect
Blank (ii)
falls far short of
eventually transcends
subtly realizes
Blank (iii)
entirely comprehension
at another level altogether
at odds with his achievement
因此,空格(ii)答案为“falls far short of”。
对立关系的句子很多,凡是出现but, yet, however, nevertheless, although, (even) though, while, whereas, notwithstanding, despite, in spite of, in contrast (to), on the contrary, on the other hand, whatever, otherwise, ironically, paradoxically, curiously, surprisingly 等带有转折逆转含义的题目,则代入空格的正确选项必与中心线索构成语义对立的反义词关系。
In spite of the increasing _______ of their opinions, the group knew they had to arrive at a consensus so that the award could be presented.
A. impartiality
B. consistency
C. judiciousness
D. incisiveness
E. polarity
A impartiality, “不偏不倚, 公正, 公平”
B consistency “一致性, 连贯性”
C judiciousness “明智”
D incisiveness “深刻,激烈”
E polarity “极端”
那么,我们要先把后半句话的意思弄明白了,the group knew they had to arrive at a consensus so that the award could be presented 即“这个团体知道他们不得不达成一致意见以便作出决定”。
Though his contemporaries tended to fixate on the politician's supposed _______,his personal correspondence _______ a surprising largesse.
A. Charity. . Confirms
B. Parsimony. . Contradicts
C. Avarice. . Betrays
D. Integrity. . Reveals
E. Generosity. . Bespeaks
Our highly ______ vocabulary for street crime contrasted sharply with our ______ vocabulary for corporate crime, a fact that corresponds the general publics unawareness of the extent of corporate crime.
(A) nuanced .. subtle
(B) uninformative .. misleading
(C) euphemistic .. abstract
technical .. jargon-laden

5. (OG Authentic GRE Practice Test Section 3, Q17)The most striking thing about the politician is how often his politics have been (i)______ rather than ideological, as he adapts his political positions at any particular moment to the political realities that constrain him. He does not, however, piously (ii)______ political principles only to betray them in practice. Rather, he attempts in subtle ways to balance his political self-interest with a (iii) ______, viewing himself as an instrument of some unchanging higher purpose.
BLANK (i) BLANK (ii) BLANK (iii)
(A) quixotic (D) brandish (G) profound cynicism
(B) self – righteous (E) flout (H) deeply felt moral code
(C) strategic (F) follow (I) thoroughgoing pragmatism
KEY:CDH
The most striking thing about the politician is how often his politics have been (i)______ rather than ideological, as he adapts his political positions at any particular moment to the political realities that constrain him.
[1]. quixotic:(幻想的)foolishly impractical especially in the pursuit of ideals; especially : marked by rash lofty romantic ideas or extravagantly chivalrous action
[2]. self-righteous:(自以为是的) convinced of one's own righteousness especially in contrast with the actions and beliefs of others : narrow - mindedly moralistic
[3]. strategic:(有策略的)of, relating to, or marked by strategy
Rather, he attempts in subtle ways to balance his political self-interest with a (iii)______, viewing himself as an instrument of some unchanging higher purpose.
[1]. profound cynicism:
[2]. deeply felt moral code:
[3]. thoroughgoing pragmatism:
He does not, however, piously (ii) ______ political principles only to betray them in practice. Rather, he attempts in subtle ways to balance his political self-interest with a (iii) ______, viewing himself as an instrument of some unchanging higher purpose.
[1]. brandish:(挥舞)to shake or wave (as a weapon) menacingly
[2]. flout:(藐视)to treat with contemptuous disregard : SCORN
6. (PowerPrep II Section 4 Q4)
That the President manages the economy is an assumption (i) ______ the prevailing wisdom that dominates electoral politics in the United States. As a result, presidential elections have become referenda on the business cycle, whose fortuitous turnings are(ii) ______ the President. Presidents are properly accountable for their executive and legislative performance, and certainly their actions may have profound effects on the economy. But these effects are (iii) ______. Unfortunately, modern political campaigns are fought on the untenable premise that Presidents can deliberately produce precise economic results.
BLANK (i) BLANK (ii) BLANK (iii)
(A) peripheral to
(D) justifiably personified in (G) usually long – lasting
(B) central to (E) erroneously attributed to
(H) regrettably unnoticeable
(C) at odds with
(F) occasionally associated with
(I) largely unpredictable
KEY:BEI
… presidential elections have become referenda on the business cycle, whose fortuitous turnings are (ii) ______ the President.
[3]. usually long-lasting:
That the President manages the economy is an assumption (i) ______ the prevailing wisdom that dominates electoral politics in the United States. As a result, presidential elections have become referenda on the business cycle,
[1]. peripheral to:在……周边
[2]. central to:居于……的中心
[3]. at odds with:与……
… their actions may have profound effects on the economy. But these effects are(iii)______. Unfortunately, modern political campaigns are fought on the untenable premise that Presidents can deliberately produce precise economic results.
[1]. usually long-lasting:
[3]. largely unpredictable:
1. referenda:(referendum 的复数形式,公投)the principle or practice of submitting to popular vote a measure passed on or proposed by a legislative body or by popular initiative
2. fortuitous:(偶然的)occurring by chance
10、Copyright and patent laws attempt to encourage innovation by ensuring that inventors are paid for creative work, so it would be________if expanded protection under these laws discouraged entrepreneurial innovation by increasing fears of lawsuits.
(A) desirable
(B) coincidental
(C) ironic
(D) natural
(E) sensible
11、The widespread public shock at the news of the guilty verdict was caused partly by _________ news stories that had_________ acquittal.
(A) sensational...condemned
(B) buried...urged
(C) impartial...mentioned
(D) biased...predicted
(E) local...denounced
12、Although the young violinist's _________ performance with the orchestra demonstrated his technical competence, his uninspired style and lack of interpretive maturity labeled him as a novice musician rather than as a truly _________ performer.
(A) spectacular...conventional
(B) blundering...artistic
(C) marginal...inept
(D) steady....accomplished
(E) dazzling...unskilled
16、Ethologists are convinced that many animals survive through learning-but learning that is _______ their genetic programming, learning as thoroughly _________ as the most instinctive of behavioral responses.
(A) superseded by...primitive
(B) compatible with...transient
(C) complementary to...familiar
(D) derived from...inventive
(E) dictated by...stereotyped

17、Unenlightened authoritarian managers rarely recognize a crucial reason for the low levels of serious conflict among members of democratically run work groups: a modicum of tolerance for dissent often prevents _________.
(A) demur
(B) schism
(C) cooperation
(D) compliance
(E) shortsightedness
18、The development of containers, possibly made from bark or the skins of animals, although this is a matter of_________, allowed the extensive sharing of forage foods in prehistoric human societies.
(A) record
(B) fact
(C) degree
(D) importance
(E) conjecture
分析:空格要填入一个名词,表示对“this”的描述,这里 this 指代的是“可能是由树皮或动物皮制作(possiblymade from bark or the skins of animals)”,所以空格要表达“可能”“”的含义。

19、Calculus, though still indispensable to science and technology, is no longer _______ ; it has an equal partner calle ddiscrete mathematics.
(A) preeminent
(B) pertinent
(C) beneficial
(D) essential
(E) pragmatic
20、All _________ biological traits fall into one of two categories: those giving their possessors greater _________ theenvironment and those rendering them more independent of it.
(A) widespread...detachment from
(B) beneficial...control over
(C) successful...freedom from
(D) neutral...compatibility with
(E) harmful...advantage in
21、The fact that a theory is _________ does not necessarily_________ its scientific truth, which must be established by unbiased controlled studies.
(A) plausible...ensure
(B) popular...limit
(C) venerable...override
(D) cohesive...undermine
(E) cumbersome...alleviate
(The fact that a theory is _____)”与“它的科学真理(its scientific truth)”之间的关系,which 引导的定语从句修饰 scientific truth,构成“解释模式”,所以空格 1 应该对应“公正和经过检验的(unbiased controlled)”的语义,可以是同义或者反义;空格2对应“建立(established)”,也可以是同义或者反义。
因果关系:because, in that, for, therefore, thus, accordingly, consequently, hence, given, so…that, so…as to, when…then, as long as, in order to……
转折关系:albeit, but, although, despite, however, in spite of, nevertheless, notwithstanding, while, whatever, regardless, even though, even if, yet……
对比关系:in contrast, on the contrary, far from, on the other hand, rather than, instead of, not…but, paradoxically, ironically, surprisingly, unexpectedly……
Johnson never _____ to ignore the standards of decent conduct mandated by company policy if _____ compliance with instructions from his superiors enabled him to do so, whatever the effects on his subordinates.
A. designed tacit
B. attempted halfhearted
C. intended direct
D. scrupled literal
E. wished feigned

prevailing kindliness普遍的,占优势地位的是kindliness,偶尔闪现出野蛮的反讽,后者对前者的动作是:A破坏,B照亮启蒙,C通过举例说明,显然选A;

alleged 所谓的,questionably true or of a specified kind(韦氏大学词典)

Although it does contain some pioneering ideas, one would hardly characterize the work as BLANK。
A. orthodox
B. eccentric
C. original
D. trifling
E. conventional
F. innovative
Longdale and Stern discovered that mitochondria and chloroplasts ___ a long, identifiable sequence of DNA; such a coincidence could be ___ only by the transfer of DNA between the two systems.
A. manufacture.. accomplished B. reveal.. repeated C. exhibit.. determined
D. share.. explained E. maintain.. contradicted
Laws do not ensure social order since laws can always be ___ , which makes them ___ unless the authorities have the will and the power to detect and punish wrongdoing.
A. contested.. provisional B. circumvented.. antiquated C. repealed.. vulnerable
D. violated.. ineffective E. modified.. unstable
Johnson never ___ to ignore the standards of decent conduct mandated by company policy if ___ compliance with instructions from his superiors enabled him to do so, whatever the effects on his subordinates.
A. deigned.. tacit B. attempted.. halfhearted C. intended.. direct
D. scrupled.. literal E. wished.. feigned
Ironically, the party leaders encountered no greater ___ their efforts to build a progressive party than the ___ of the progressives already elected to the legislature.
A. support for.. advocacy B. threat to.. promise C. benefit from.. success
D. obstacle to.. resistance E. praise for.. reputation
Although ___ is usually thought to spring from regret for having done something wrong, it may be that its origin
is the realization that one's own nature is irremediably ___.
A. contrition.. resilient B. certitude.. confident C.skepticism.. innocent
D. remorse.. flawed E. resignation. frivolous
Any language is a conspiracy against experience in the sense that it is a collective attempt to ___ experience by reducing it into discrete parcels.
A. extrapolate B. transcribe C. complicate D. amplify E. manage
Natural selection tends to eliminate genes that cause inherited diseases, acting most strongly against the most severe diseases; consequently, hereditary diseases that are ___ would be expected to be very ___, but, surprisingly, they are not.
A. lethal.. rare B. untreated.. dangerous C. unusual.. refractory
D. new.. perplexing E. widespread.. acute
Although ___, almost self-effacing in his private life, he displays in his plays and essays a strong ___ publicity and controversy.
A. conventional.. interest in B. monotonous.. reliance on C. shy.. aversion toward
D. retiring.. penchant for E. evasive.. impatience with
Considering how long she had yearned to see Italy, her first reaction was curiously ___.
A. meditative B. tepid C. categorical D. unoriginal E. insightful
The hierarchy of medical occupations is in many ways a ___ system; its strata remain ___ and the practitioners in them have very little vertical mobility.
A. health.. skilled B. delivery.. basic C. regimental.. flexible
D. training.. inferior E. caste.. intact
The natural balance between prey and predator has been increasingly ___, most frequently by human intervention.
A. celebrated B. predicted C. observed D. disturbed E. questioned
Poe's ___ reviews of contemporary fiction, which often find great merit in otherwise ___ literary gems, must make us respect his critical judgment in addition to his well-known literary talent.
A. thorough.. completed B. petulant.. unpopular C. insightful.. unappreciated
D. enthusiastic.. acclaimed E. harsh.. undeserving
Aptly enough, this work so imbued with the notion of changing times and styles has been constantly ___ over the years, thereby reflecting its own mutability.
A.appreciated B. emulated C. criticized D. revised E. reprinted

Brutus is often held up as the embodiment of ______–-yet, while it is true that he deceived his friend, Julius Caesar, one must not forget that Caesar had become both a danger to himself and the Republic.
(A) wisdom
(B) prudence
(C) treachery
(D) selflessness
(E) perfidy
(F) cowardice
The most technologically advanced societies have been responsible for the greatest ----------; indeed, savagery seems to be in direct proportion to -----.
(A) wars ... viciousness
(B) catastrophes ... ill-will
(C) atrocities ... development
(D) inventions ... know-how
(E) triumphs ... civilization
atrocities ... development。
triumph: 1.
37.5. Although some consider forcefulness and persistence to be two traits desirable to the same deGREe, I think that making a violent effort is much less useful than maintaining a steady one.
58.3. Joe spoke of superfluous and vital matters with exactly the same deGREe of intensity, as though for him serious mattered neither more nor less than did trivialities.
9.2. A perennial goal in zoology is to infer function from structure, relating the behavior of am organism to its physical form and cellular organization.
11.7. When theories formerly considered to be disinterested in their scientific objectivity are found instead to reflect a consistent observational and evaluative bias, then the presumed neutrality of science gives way to the recognition that categories of knowledge are human construction.
The most vivid expression of such errors occurs in genetically identical( isogenic ) organisms. Even when reared under the same conditions, isogenic organisms are rarely exact copies of one another, and their differences have revealed much about the random variations that result from an organism’s limited supply of genetic information. In isogenic Daphniae, for example, even though the position, size, and branching pattern of each optic neuron are remarkably constant, there is some variability in connectivity, and the number of synapses varies GREatly. This variability is probably the result of random scatter beyond the resolution of genetic control and is best termed “imprecision”, since its converse, the deGREe of clustering about a mean, is conventionally, called “precision”.
