文章读完了，了解大意后，考生便可以开始填空了。在填每个空格时，可以从出题者的出题思路着手，初步作出每个题的答案。总的来说，出题人有以下六种出思路。
(一)词义与词形的辨析
选项与选项之间构成同义词、反义词、形近词的关系。有时出题者也借助选项，考察考生对某些单词词义的精确理解。

(二)逻辑关系
所填空格的句子，与上下文构成指代、列举、因果、比较、对比、让步、补充、递进等逻辑关系。

根据上下文，空格前的意思为“外籍研究学者通常把自己隔离在实验室里作为一种保护的手段”。空格后为“他需要融入的是高度的组织化的大学系统”。前者是一种孤离的状态“isolate”，而后者都是一种组织化的系统“befitted to ahiglyorganizeduniversity”，从逻辑的角度而言，前后已然成为对立、矛盾的关系。所以答案为表示对比(转折)关系的连词however。
(三)结构识别
这里讲到的结构，是指英文中表祯句子结构的固定词组，如not only…but…,as well,some…theothers…, still others…等。
(四)固定搭配
这里的固定搭配，是指动词与名词之间的搭配。如：同样是“利用……”, 却有不同的搭配take advantageofsth. /makeuse of sth.
(五)动词的用法
考生应从动词的时态、语态(被动语态和主动语态)以及非谓语动词(不定式、动名词、现在分词、过去分词)几个角度逐一考虑。
(六)介词的用法
介词的用法中多考察介词与名词、介词与形容词及及介词与动词的搭配和用法。
除了按照以上六种思路从正面逐一解题外，考生还可以灵活多变地从反面入手，利用排除法获得正确答案。笔者研究发现，在四级考试的选词填空部分，特别是在考察关联词的测试中，利用一种叫“同性元素排除法”的方法能够快速地缩小可选范围，找到正确答案。
举例：“In theUnited States professors have many otherduties86teaching, such asadministrative or research work . 87 ,the timethat a professor can spend with astudent outside of classislimited.”

在选词填空中，所谓的同性元素是指具有相同的含义，同样的语法以及一致用法的两个或多个选项，只要具备以上几个条件，那它们相互之间就构成了同性元素。其实，同性元素的出现，是出题者黔驴技穷的表现，是为了凑足四个选项不得已而为之的。分析以上两题选项，很明显，86题中，A与B互为同性元素，意思与语法一模一样，均表示“除了…”(不包含)。87题中A与D也如出一辙，均是表示转折的连词，译为“然而，但是”，选项中一旦出现同性元素，它们必定不是正确答案，一旦发现选项中有同性元素存在，考生应立即将其排除掉。这样一来，86题只剩下可选答案C)、D)，87题只剩下B)、C)，可选范围迅速缩小，再根据上下文逻辑关系的判定可得出正确答案86D)，87B)。
第三步，寻找线索
选词填空不同于句子与结构，必须要从整篇文章入手，通篇考虑，结合上下文答案，寻找线索就秉诚了这一思想。有些题从单纯的句子来考虑，我们会发现四个选项均可以入选，但从上下文的线索入手，就能迅速排除其它三个，找到正确答案，从某种意义上来说，“寻找线索“不仅可以考察考生的语言知识，而且更强调对文章内容的整体把握。
第四步，回头补缺
在做题时，如果有的难题一时做不出来，应立刻跳过此题，继续往下做。笔者不提倡考生在某一题上花费大量的时间。道理不言自明，只要考生坚持往下做，随着空格变得越来越少，对文章的理解也越来越轻松，有时就能从下文的线索和暗示中找到答案，这样再回过头来填上答案，也未为晚也。
第五步，核实答案
题目填完后(除个别难度较大的题目外)，考生应利用一到两分钟将答案带入原文通读，通读的目的是通过“语感”来核实答案。这样读下来，不仅可以改正填错的词，而且还可以在这一过程中得到启发，把做不上来的题目填出来。

选词填空题是大学英语四级考试的新题型，占整个考试分值的10%，选词填空题的文章长度在220―250词左右，要求从给出的15个词中选择10个填入合适的空中。选词填空题的题目在考试*大设计时并非拿来一篇短文随便去掉几个词，设计者一般遵循以下原则：首句不设空;一句话中不设两空;设空比较均匀，基本覆盖整个段落;设空不影响考生对文章大意的理解;选项所提供的词皆为实义词，包括：名词、动词、形容词、副词等，它们与文章的上下文紧密联系;每个正确选项均有干扰项，相互干扰的选项之间不是同义词或近义词。因此，要做好选词填空题，必须要在熟悉选项、通读全文、把握文章结构与大意的前提下，根据所提供的词汇及句子的结构、语法和语篇等信息，通过逻辑推理、对比等手段最后确定答案。
下面介绍一下选词填空题的解题步骤及技巧：
一、浏览全文和选项
这一步是为了了解文章的大致内容和选项，做到心中有数。主要关注文章中涉及的人物、事件、地方、原因以及结果。反复出现的词将会是帮助大家掌握文章大致内容的重要线索。
二、确定选项的词性
选项中的15个词是考查的关键，对于熟悉的单词标明词性和词义，不熟悉的单词或者不认识的单词只需标明词性。
辨别词性要注意以下几点：
1. 动词分为谓语动词和非谓语动词。非谓语动词包括：动词不定式、动名词、现在分词和过去分词。过去分词有两种可能性(形容词和动词的过去分词), 无法确定时标问号。
2. 不认识的词看后缀。构词法中, 前缀区分意思, 后缀区分词性。所以看词尾往往能大致分出词性。
3. 词性无法确定的, 暂时搁置。
4. 做出相应的标记。
三、瞻前顾后，灵活选词
词性分类之后，回到原文中，根据原文中空格前后的单词或语句确定所填词的词性，然后从分好类的单词中选择出词性、意思、语法都符合要求的最佳选项。我们可以根据一些简单的语法知识确定答案。
首先，根据空格的前后决定所填词的词性。
1. 确定空格为名词
(1)空格前面为冠词、形容词或者及物动词的，空格处应填入名词;
(2)空格后面是动词的，空格处应填入该动词的主语(名词);
(3)空格前面是介词的，空格充当介词宾语，应填入名词或动名词，
2. 确定空格为动词
(1)空格前面已经有名词/代词作主语，后面又有名词/代词作为动词的宾语，空格处应为及物动词;
(2)空格前面是名词/代词，后面没考试*大有宾语，空格处应填不及物动词;
(3)空格前面是名词/代词，后面是副词/介词，空格处应填入不及物动词，与副词/介词构成固定搭配;
(4)空格前面是名词/代词，后面是形容词，空格处应填入系动词或be动词;
(5)空格前面有不定式标志to，空格处应填入动词原形;若to是介词，应填入动名词。
3. 确定空格为形容词
(1)空格后面为名词，空格处应填入形容词;
(2)空格前面是副词，空格处应填入形容词;
(3)空格前面是系动词，空格处应填入形容词作表语。
4. 确定空格为副词
(1)空格前面或者后面为动词，空格处应填入副词;
(2)空格后面是形容词，空格处应填入副词。
其次，利用逻辑关系词确定答案。
在此类题目中，文章的逻辑关系对于考生把握整篇文章是至关重要的。文章的逻辑关系是通过一些逻辑关系词体现的，考生可以通过逻辑关系词来确定答案。
常见的逻辑关系词如下：
(1)并列关系：and, or, as well as 等
(2)对比或转折关系：but, however, on the contrary, rather than 等
(3)比较关系：as ... as, like, similarly等
