比如31题后文中出现death,31题 Maja ____ her cousin, 选项A. lost B. visited C. rescued D. left 不难选择A选项。“Jasmina never got the chance to do it.”says Maja, now 32, “So I __34__ that someday I'do it for her.” 四个选项 A. pretended B. decided C. preferred D. agreed.

71. Only if people all…Only位于句首引起的部分倒装句. 2011年71. Not until two days after the earthquake ____(她发现) her mother alive. Holding the keys in the hand 不同的是今年语法考点中突出了对句子结构的分析,如80题, _____ (比较这两把牙刷) and you'll find the purple one is softer. (compare).

Like most of us, I try to be mindful of food that goes to waste. Thearugula (芝麻菜 ) was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roastchicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with adinner invitation. I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, thearugula went bad. Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; I

could have made six salads with what I threw out.In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, “food wastegoes against the moral grain,” as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month’scover story. It’s jaw-dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown away— from “ugly” (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to largeamounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and otherresources used to grow it. That makes food waste an environmental problem.

In fact, Royte writes, “if food waste were a country, it would be the thirdlargest producer of greenhouse gases in the world.”If that’s hard to understand, let’s keep it as simple as the arugula at theback of my refrigerator. Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time —but for him, it’s more like 12 boxes of donated strawberries nearing theirlast days. Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D.C., whichrecovers food and turns it into healthy meals. Last year it recovered morethan 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished(有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And thestrawberries? Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use inmeals down the road.

Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don’t think. “Everyonecan play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more foodthan necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not

include the side dish you won’t eat.” Curtin says.

24. What does the author want to show by telling the arugula story?

A. We pay little attention to food waste.

B. We waste food unintentionally at times.

C. We waste more vegetables than meat.

D. We have good reasons for wasting food.

25. What is a consequence of food waste according to the text?

A. Moral decline.

B. Environmental harm.

C. Energy shortage.

D. Worldwide starvation.

26. What does Curtin’s company do?

A. It produces kitchen equipment.

B. It turns rotten arugula into clean fuel.

C. It helps local farmers grow fruits.

D. It makes meals out of unwanted food.

27. What does Curtin suggest people do?

A. Buy only what is needed.

B. Reduce food consumption.

C. Go shopping once a week.

D. Eat in restaurants less often.

The elderly residents (居民) in care homes in London are being givenhens to look after to stop them feeling lonely.

The project was dreamed up by a local charity (慈善组织) to reduce loneliness and improve elderly people’s wellbeing. It is also being used to help patients suffering dementia, a serious illness of the mind. Staff in carehomes have reported a reduction in the use of medicine where hens are in use.

People have been bringing their children in to see the hens and residents come and sit outside to watch them.I’m enjoying the creative activities, and it feels great to have done something useful.”There are now 700 elderly people looking after hens in 20 care homes in the North East, and the charity has been given financial support to roll it outcountrywide.

We are looking forward to the benefits andfun the project can bring to people here.”Lynn Lewis, director of Notting Hill Pathways, said: “We are happy to be taking part in the project. It will really help connect our residents through a shared interest and creative activities.”

Human speech contains more than 2,000 different sounds, from thecommon “m” and “a” to the rare clicks of some southern African languages. But why are certain sounds more common than others? A ground-breaking,five-year study shows that diet-related changes in human bite led to newspeech sounds that are now found in half the world’s languages.More than 30 years ago, the scholar Charles Hockett noted that speech sounds called labiodentals, such as “f” and “v”, were more common in thelanguages of societies that ate softer foods. Now a team of researchers led by Damián Blasi at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, has found how and why this trend arose. They discovered that the upper and lower front teeth of ancient human adults were aligned (对齐), making it hard to produce labiodentals, which are formed by touching the lower lip to the upper teeth. Later, our jaws changed to an overbite structure (结构), making it easier to produce such sounds.

The team showed that this change in bite was connected with the development of agriculture in the Neolithic period. Food became easier to chew at this point. The jawbone didn’t have to do as much work and sodidn’t grow to be so large. Analyses of a language database also confirmed that there was a globalchange in the sound of world languages after the Neolithic age, with the useof “f” and “v” increasing remarkably during the last few thousand years. These sounds are still not found in the languages of many hunter-gatherer people today.

This research overturns the popular view that all human speech soundswere present when human beings evolved around 300,000 years ago. “The set of speech sounds we use has not necessarily remained stable since theappearance of human beings, but rather the huge variety of speech sounds that we find today is the product of a complex interplay of things likebiological change and cultural evolution,” said Steven Moran, a member of the research team.

32. Which aspect of the human speech sound does Damián Blasi’s research

focus on?

A. Its variety.

B. Its distribution.

D. Its development.

C. Its quantity.

33. Why was it difficult for ancient human adults to produce labiodentals?

A. They had fewer upper teeth than lower teeth.

B. They could not open and close their lips easily.

C. Their jaws were not conveniently structured.

D. Their lower front teeth were not large enough.

34. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?

A. Supporting evidence for the research results.

B. Potential application of the research findings.

C. A further explanation of the research methods.

D. A reasonable doubt about the research process.

35. What does Steven Moran say about the set of human speech sounds?

A. It is key to effective communication.

B. It contributes much to cultural diversity.

C. It is a complex and dynamic system.

D. It drives the evolution of human beings.

Fitness Magazine recently ran an article titled “Five Reasons to Thank Your Workout Partner.” One reason was: “You’ll actually show up if you know someone is waiting for you at the gym,” while another read: “ 36 ” With a workout partner, you will increase your training effort as there is a subtle (微妙) competition. So, how do you find a workout partner? First of all, decide what you want from that person.

37

Or do you just want to be physically fit, able to move with strength and flexibility?Think about the exercises you would like to do with your workout partner. You might think about posting what you are looking for on social media, but it probably won’t result in a useful response. If you plan on

38

working out in a gym, that person must belong to the same gym.

My partner posted her request on the notice board of a local park. Her

notice included what kind of training she wanted to do, how many days a

week and how many hours she wanted to spend on each session, and her age.

It also listed her favorite sports and activities, and provided her phone

number.

39

You and your partner will probably have different skills.

40

Over time, both of you will benefit — your partner will be able to lift more weights and you will become more physically fit. The core (核心) of your relationship is that you will always be there to help each other.

A. Your first meeting may be a little awkward.

B. A workout partner usually needs to live close by.

C. You’ll work harder if you train with someone else.

D. Do you want to be a better athlete in your favorite sport?

E. How can you write a good “seeking training partner” notice?

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different

primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and

walking the route (路线) through thick evergreen forest.

I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself

off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy

smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the

other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.

What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!

I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what

had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at

him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and

let him decide.”

I bit back my frustration (懊恼 ). I knew the coach meant well — he

thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could

run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body

rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.

David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running

like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular

kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were

doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had

decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer — that’s all.

David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his

run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education

teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was

proud of his strong determination.

注意:

1.续写词数应为 150左右;

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.

I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.

The flight was overbooked, and Delta, the airline, offered us $400 per person in credits to give up our seats and leave the next day.I had meetings in New York, so I had to get back. But that didn't mean my husband and my son couldn't stay. I took my nine-month-old and took off for home.

The next day, my husband and son were offered more credits to take an even later flight.Yes, I encouraged― okay, ordered― them to wait it out at the airport, to

Now some people may think I'm a bad mother and not such a great wife either. But as a big-time bargain hunter, I know the value of a dollar. And these days, a good deal is something few of us can afford to pass up.

I've made a living looking for the best deals and exposing (揭露) the worst tricks .I have been the consumer reporter of NBC's Today show for over a decade. I have written a coupleof books including one titled Tricks of the Trade: A Consumer Survival Guide. And I really do what I believe in.

I tell you this because there is no shame in getting your money’s worth. I’m also tightfisted when it comes to shoes, clothes for my children, and expensive restaurants. But I wouldn't hesitate to spend on a good haircut. It keeps its shape longer, and it's the first thing people notice. And I will also spend on a classic piece of furniture. Quality lasts.

The baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert (警觉). Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it.She stares at it carefully. A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze(凝视) starts to lose its focus - until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns; she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world?

Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes.Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects(a comb,a key,an orange and so on),changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves.Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses.Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two;likewise (同样地) when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.

60.The experiment described in Paragraph 1 is related to the baby’sA.sense of hearing C.sense of touch A.the size of cards

B.sense of sight D.sense of smell B.the colour of pictures D.the number of objects

C. She's a media person. A.How to expose bad tricks.

B. She seldom makes a compromise. D. She is interested in cheap products.

59. What does the author want to tell us? C. How to spend money wisely.

61.Babies are sensitive to the change in______. C.the shape of patterns

62.Why did the researchers test the babies with drumbeats?

A.To reduce the difficulty of the experiment. B.To see how babies recognize sounds. C.To carry their experiment further. A.Science fiction.

D.To keep the babies’ interest. B.Children’s literature. D.A science report. C

It happened to me recently.I was telling someone how much I had enjoyed reading Barack Obama’s Dreams From My Father and how it had changed my views of our President.A friend I was talking to agreed with me that it was, in his words,Da brilliantly(精彩地)written book‖. However, he then went on to talk aboutMr. Obama in a way which suggested he had no idea of his background at all .I sensed that I was talking to a book liar.

And it seems that my friend is not the only one. Approximately two thirds of people have lied about reading a book which they haven’t.In the World Book Day’sDReport on Guilty Secrets‖,Dreams From My Father is at number 9.The report liststen books, and various authors, which people have lied about reading, and as I’m not one to lie too often (I’d hate to be caught out),I’ll admit here and now that I haven’t read the entire top ten .But I am pleased to say that, unlike 42 percent of people,I have read the book at number one,George Orwell’s 1984.I think it’s really brilliant.

The World Book Day report also has some other interesting information in it.It says that many people lie about having read Jane Austen,Charles Dickens,Fyodor Dostoevsky(I haven’t read him,but haven’t lied about it either)and Herman Melville.

Asked why they lied, the most common reason was toDimpress‖someone they were speaking to.This could be tricky if the conversation became more inCdepth!

But when asked which authors they actually enjoy, people named J. K.Rowling,John Grisham,Sophie Kinsella(ah,the big sellers,in other words).Forty-two percent of people asked admitted they turned to the back of the book to read the end before finishing the story(I’ll come clean:I do this and am astonished that 58 percent said they had never done so).

64. How did the author find his friend a book liar? A.By judging his manner of speaking. C.By mentioning a famous name.

B.By looking into his background. D.By discussing the book itself.

63.Where does this text probably come from? C.An advertisement.

65.Which of the following is aDguilty secret‖according to the World Book Day report? A.Charles Dickens is very low on the top-ten list. B.42% of people pretended to have read 1984. C.The author admitted having read 9 books. D.Dreams From My Father is hardly read.

66.By lying about reading,a person hopes to . A.control the conversation C.learn about the book A.Favorable.

I was about 13 when an uncle gave me a copy of Jostein Gaarder's Sophie's World. It was full of ideas that were new to me, so I spent the summer with my head in and out of that book. It spoke to me and brought me into a world of philosophy(哲学).

That love for philosophy lasted until I got to college. Nothing kills the love for philsosphy faster than people who think they understand Foucault, Baudrillard, or Confucius better than you - and then try to explain them.

Eric weiner's The Socrates Express: In Search of Life Lessons from Dead Philosophers reawakened my love for philssophy. It is not an explanation, but an invitation to think and experience philosophy.

Weiner stara each chapter with a scene on a train ride between cities and then frames each philosopher's work in the centext(背景)of one thing they can help us do better. The end result is a read in which we learn to wonder like Socrates, see like Thoreau, listen like Schopenhauer, and have no re-grets like Nietzsche. This, more than a book about undestanding philosophy ,is a book abour learning to use philosophy to improve a life.

He makes philosopical thought an appealing exercise that improves the quality of our experiences, and he does so with plenty of humor. Weiner enters into conversation with some of the most important philosophers in history, and he becomes part of that crowd in the process by decoding(解读)their mssages and adding his own interpretation.

The Socrates Express is a fun, sharp book that draws readers in with its apparent simplicity and grad-ually pulls them in deeper thoughts on desire, loneliness, and aging. The invitation is clear: Weiner wants you to pick up a coffee or tea and sit down with this book. I encourage you to take his offer. It's worth your time, even if time is something we don't have a lot of.

28.Who opened the door to philosophy for the author?

A.Foucault.

B.Eric Weiner.

C.Jostein Gaarder.

D.A college teacher.

B.Its ideas can be applied to daily life.

C.It includes comments from readers.

D.It leaves an open ending.

A.Objective and plain.

Grizaly bears, which may grow to about 2.5m long and weigh over 400kg, occupy a conflicted cor-ner of the American psyche-we rever(敬畏) them even as they give us frightening dreams. Ask the tour-ists from around the world that flood into Yellowstone National Park what they most hope to see, and their answer is often the same: a grizzly bear.

”Grizzly bears are re-occupying large areas of their former range,“ says bear biologist Chris Servheen. As grizzly bears expand their range into places where they haven't been seen in a century or more, they're incresingly being sighted by humans.

The western half of the U.S. was full of grizzlies when Eurpeans came, with a rough number of 50,000 or more living alongside Native Americans. By the early 1970s, after centuries of cruel and continu-ous hunting by settlers, 600 to 800 grizzlies remained on a mere 2 percent of their former range in the Northern Rockies. In 1975, grizzlies were listed under the Endangered Species Act.

Today, there are about 2,000 or more grizzly bears in the U.S. Their recovery has been so suecess-ful that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has twice attempted to de-list grizzlies, which would loosen legal protections and allow them to be hunted. Both efforts were overturned due to lawsuits from conserva-tion groups. For now, grizzlies remain listed.

Obviously,if precautions(预防)aren't taken, grizzlies can become troublesome, sometimes killing farm animals or walking through yards in search of food. If people remove food and attractants from their yards and campsites, grizzlies will typically pass by without trouble. Putting electric fencing around chicken houses and other farm animal quarters is also highly effective at getting grizzlies away.”Our hope is to have a clean, attractant-free place where bears ean pass through without learning bad habits,“ says James Jonkel, longtime biologist who manages bears in and around Missoula.

32.How do Americans look at grizlies?

A.They cause mixed feelings in people.

B.They should be kept in national parks.

C.They are of high scientific value.

D.They are a symbol of American culture.

33.What has helped the increase of the grizzly population?

A.The European settlers' behavior.

B.The expansion of bears' range.

C.The protection by law since 1975.

D.The support of Native Americans.

34.What has stopped the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from de-listing grizzlies?

A.The opposition of conservation groups.

B.The successful comeback of grizzlies.

C.The voice of the biologists.

D.The local farmers'advocates.

35.What can be ierere from the last paragraph?

A.Food should be provided for grizzlies.

C.A special path should be built for grizzlies.

D.Technology can be itroduced to protect grizzlies.

(1)把几个字母看做一个组合来记,如:“-ight”——light,right,fight,night,might,sight,tight。

(2)外旧内新,如:bridge“桥”看成b+ridge(ridge“山脊”);sharp看成s+harp(harp“竖琴”)。

(1)英汉(译音)比较,如:mama(妈妈),cigar(雪茄),beer(啤酒),bar(酒吧),fee(费用)等。

(2)单复数的比较,如:good—goods,spirit—spirits,wood—woods。

(3)同音词的比较,如:right—write,eye—I。

1:The Young Generation Faces New Challenges

The young generation has been labeled as the lost generation; young college graduates are unemployed, upset about debt and unable to find a promising career. It is not for everyone, but an increasing number of graduates have been forced into this situation, at the same time, they face new challenges.

First, the rising debt, lack of income and high house prices give the young generation great pressure, most of them can’t afford these, and have to live with their parents. Living with their parents makes the young generation loses certain freedom, like they have to go home at night and can’t have fun with friends. What’s more, the children are easy to depend on their parents; they don’t take responsibility of themselves. In the long run, it is not good for them.

Second, for those who remain unemployed for a significant period, remaining motivated can be the most important problem. Without jobs, people will feel depressed, they are easy to over think, and then give themselves much pressure, at last, they will lose hope of the word and be no longer motivated.

It is not easy to find the job, young generation must be positive, they need to be independent and motivated to face the new challenges.

2:The Advantages and Disadvantages of Television.

In China, almost every family has TV set in their house. Television has made great contribution to people’s daily lives and children’s education. Some people even think that television is one of the greatest inventions in the world. But there is a good side and a bad side to everything and that includes the television.

On one hand, TV is a powerful educational tool that through it people know what is happening in the rest of the world. Because of television, people begin to understand different cultures and current affairs. They know about the things they never knew before, they create their own opinions and form their sense of worth. The TV opens a brand-new door for them to explore the things they want to know. Many people may go traveling due to watch the beautiful scenes in TV.

On the other hand, some people may find them addicted to television, especially the young people. They spend most of their free time watching TV programs instead of playing outside with their peers. In this case, the children may lack of the ability of communicate effectively with others. TV makes them isolated. What’ more, sometimes the TV programs may contain sexual scenes or bloody scenes that not suitable for children to watch. This will cause negative effects on them.

To sum up, I think television has both advantages and disadvantages, people should find a balance between it. Make the most use of it, don’t be the salves of it.

3:The Advantages of Doing Physical Exercises.

As the proverb goes, “no one knows the value of health until he loses it.” From this, we know that health is very important to everybody. But how to keep fit? Many people believe that sports can offer people health and pleasure. As far as I concern, I think doing physical exercises have lots of advantages.

First of all, doing exercises in the morning will refresh my body as well as give me a good appetite to eat my breakfast. What’s more, the air in the morning is really fresh and clean, so I can keep my mind clear and sound in the class. By doing physical every day I can keep my mind alert that I can finish my tasks in time. If I do not do any physical exercise, I will feel tired and my body becomes quite sluggish. During the night, I may find it becomes harder to fall asleep. Second, doing exercises everyday will help me to mound a better personality. It takes time and patient to do exercises. Sometimes I just want to give up, but my friends encourage me to carry on, then I feel a lot of satisfaction. Doing physical exercises makes me stronger and healthier. That’s my personal experience.

As a student, sports are indispensable. You can pick up your favorite sport and do it every day. Only in this way, you can have both pleasure and a healthy body.
