CHICAGO(Reuters)-Smoking not only can wrinkle(皱纹)the face and turn it yellow―it can do the same to the whole body, researchers reported on Monday.

The study, published in the Archives of Dermatology, shows that smoking affects the skin all over the body-even skin protected from the sun.

“We examined non-facial skin that was protected from the sun,and found that the total number of packs,of cigarette smoked per day and the total years a person has smoked were linked with the amount of skin damage a person experienced,”Dr.Yolanda, who led the study, said in a statement.

“In participants older than 65 years, smokers had significantly more fine wrinkling than nonsmokers.Similar fmdings were seen in participants aged 45 to 65 years.” Yolanda’s team added in their report.

The researchers tested 82 people, smokers and nonsmokers, taking pictures of the inner right arms. They ranged,in age from 22 to 91 and half were smokers. In dependent judges decided how wrinkled each person’s skin was.

When skin is exposed to sunlight, especially the face,it becomes coarse(粗糙的).Wrinkled and discolored with a pale yellow tint,Yolanda's team wrote.

Several previous studies have found that cigarette smoking led to premature(过早的)skin aging asmeasured by facial wrinkles, the study said, but little has been done to measure the aging of skin not exposed to light.

The report did not discuss die mechanism involved but previous research has found that cigarette smoke, among other things, causes blood vessels(血管)beneath the skin to constrict(紧缩),reducing blood supply to the skin.

The day my husband fell to his death,it started to snow, just like any November day.His body, when I found it,was lightly covered with snow.It snowed almost every day for the next four months, while I sat on the couch and watched it pile up.One morning,I shuffled downstairs and was surprised to see a snow remover clearing my driveway and the bent back of a woman shoveling(铲)my walk.I dropped to my knees, crawled through the living room. And back up stairs so those good people would not see me.I was embarrassed. My first thought was,how would I ever repay them? I didn’t have the strength to brush my hair let alone shovel someone’s walk.

Before John’s death,I took pride in the fact that I rarely asked for help or favors,I defined myself by my competence and independence. So who was I if I was no longer capable and busy? How could I respect myself if all I did was sit on the couch every day and watch the snowfall?

Learning how to receive the love and support that came my way wasn't easy.Friends cooked forme and l cried because I couldn't even help them set the table.“I'm not usually this lazy,”I wept. Finally,my friend Kathy sat down with me and said,“Mary, cooking for you is not a burden. I love you and I want to do it.It makes me feel good to be able to do something for you.”

Over and over,I heard similar emotions from the people who supported me during those dark days. One very wise man told me,“You are not doing nothing.Being fully open to your sorrow may be the hardest work you will everdo.”

I am not the person I once was,but in many ways I have changed for the better. My heart is now filled with thanks for people around me.I have been surprised to learn that there is incredible freedom that comes from facing one’s worst fear and walking away whole.I believe there is strength, for sure,in accepting a dark period of our life.

??? Everyone should be so lucky as to have a friend like Francia Raisa. On Thursday, singer and actress Selena Gomez, 25, used In to explain why she was “laying low” this summer. She posted a photo of herself in a hospital bed with her friend Francia Raisa holding hands. She said she recently received a kidney transplant from her best friend because of complications(并发症) from lupus(狼疮), an autoimmune disease, which means it is the result of the immune system attacking normal tissue, including the kidneys, brain, heart and lungs.

People with lupus may first experience tiredness, joint pain or a little bit of rash(皮疹) on their bodies and can go for a long time before their doctors realize it is more serious. Many people see two or four doctors before the real problem is picked up. According to Dr. Kyriakos Kirou, roughly a third to one-half of people with lupus develop kidney disease, and up to one in five of them will eventually need a transplant, sometimes because they weren’t treated with effective drugs to prevent the immune system from attacking the kidneys. Though Gomez said that she was “very well now,” she warned about the dangers of not taking medical diagnoses seriously, like she initially did.

Her Instagra post also called attention to two major health topics: the need for living organ donators and the fact that Gomez represents three groups more likely to be diagnosed with lupus and lupus-related kidney disease. Nine out of 10 people diagnosed with lupus are women, and most develop the disease between the ages of 15 to 44. And lupus is two to three times more common among women of color, including Hispanic women, according to the Lupus Foundation.

Raisa is Latina, and Gomez’s father is of Mexican origin. While it’s not essential that the organ donator and receiver be of the same ethnicity, people who share a similar background sometimes are better matched, according to data from the United Network for Organ Sharing.

1.What can we learn about Francia Raisa?

A. She is lucky.

B. She is selfless.

C. She is optimistic.

D. She is encouraging.

2.What is lupus like at its early stage?

A. It is deadly.

B. It is hard to recognize.

C. Its symptoms are psychological.

D. It reminds you of a kidney disease.

3.What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. People with lupus.

B. Colored women lupus patients.

C. Lupus patients with kidney disease.

D. Women between the ages of 15 to 44.

4.What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A. Raisa and Gomez have a similar background.

B. Gomez has fully recovered thanks to the kidney from Raisa.

C. It is vital for the donator and receiver to be of the same race.

D. The organ from the donator of the same race matches the receiver better.

??? A few weeks ago, I called an Uber to take me to the Boston airport for a flight home for the holidays. As I slid into the back seat of the car, the warm intonations(语调) of the driver’s accent washed over me in a familiar way.

I learned that he was a recent West African immigrant with a few young children, working hard to provide for his family. I could relate: I am the daughter of two Ethiopian immigrants who made their share of sacrifices to ensure my success. I told him I was on a college break and headed home to visit my parents. That’s how he found out I go to Harvard. An approving eye glinted at me in the rearview window, and quickly, we crossed the boundaries of rider and driver. I became his daughter, all grown up ― the product of his sacrifice.

And then came the fateful question: “What do you study?” I answered “history and literature” and the pride in his voice faded, as I knew it might. I didn’t even get to add “and African-American studies” before he cut in, his voice thick with disappointment, “All that work to get into Harvard, and you study history?”

Here I was, his daughter, squandering the biggest opportunity of her life. He went on to deliver the age-old lecture that all immigrant kids know. We are to become doctors (or lawyers, if our parents are being generous) ― to make money and send money back home. The unspoken demand, made across generations, which my Uber driver laid out plainly, is simple: Fulfill your role in the narrative(故事) of upward mobility so your children can do the same.

I used to feel anxious and backed into a corner by the questioning, but now as a junior in college, I’m grateful for their support more than anything. This holiday season, I’ve promised myself I won’t huff and get annoyed at their inquiries. I won’t defensively respond with “but I plan to go to law school!” when I get unrequested advice. I’ll just smile and nod, and enjoy the warmth of the occasion.

1.What disappointed the driver?

A. The author’s attitude towards him.

B. The school that the author is attending.

C. The author’s majors in history and literature.

D. The author’s interests in African American studies.

2.Which of the following can replace the underlined word “squandering” in Paragraph 4?

A. wasting

B. creating

C. valuing

D. seizing

3.Why are immigrant kids expected to be doctors or lawyers?

A. Their parents want them to move upward in society.

B. Their parents are high achieving as well.

C. They have more opportunities.

D. They are very smart in general.

4.How did the author react to the driver’s questioning?

A. Getting upset.

B. Feeling satisfied.

C. Defending herself.

D. Appreciating his concern.

??? What’s small, buzzes here and there and visits flowers? If you said bees or hummingbirds, you got it. You wouldn’t be the first if you mixed the two up. Now a group of researchers even say we should embrace our history of considering the two together in the same group. The way scientists study bees could help them study hummingbird behavior, too.

Scientists first compared the two back in the 1970s when studying how animals search for food. The idea is that animals use a kind of math to make choices in order to minimize the work it takes to earn maximum rewards. Researchers at the time focused on movement rules, like the order in which they visited flowers, and where flowers were located relative to others. It was “almost like an algorithm(算法)” for efficient searching, said David Pritchard, a biologist at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Hummingbirds and bees had similar solutions.

As the field of animal cognition(认知) appeared, hummingbird and bee research parted. Neuroscientists and behavioral ecologists developed ways to study bee behavior in naturalistic settings. Hummingbird researchers compared hummingbirds to other birds and borrowed methods from psychology to study their ability to learn in the lab. To be fair, hummingbirds and bees differ. For example, hummingbirds have more advanced eyes and brains than bees. Honeybees and bumblebees are social; hummingbirds typically aren’t.

But however they perceive(感知) or process information, they both experience similar information, Dr. Pritchard said. In day-to-day searching for food, for example, hummingbirds may rely on more of a bee’s-eye view than a bird’s-eye view. Like other birds, they rely on landmarks, distances and directions to make maps when travelling long distances, but they don’t use these cues to find flowers. Move a flower just an inch or so away from where a hummingbird thought it was and it will hover over the flower’s original location. Dr. Pritchard is investigating if, like bees, hummingbirds engage in view matching ― hovering, scanning snapshots of a place to its memory and using those as references later.

1.What is the center of research on hummingbirds and bees in the 1970s?

A. Memory.

B. Movement rules.

C. Reward calculating.

D. Information processing.

2.Which subject’s research methods were adopted to study the learning ability of Hummingbirds?

A. Math.

B. Biology.

C. Ecology.

D. Psychology.

3.How do researchers find out that hummingbirds are not like birds?

A. By setting them free.

B. By moving flowers.

C. By matching view.

D. By making maps.

4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A. Hummingbirds and Bees

B. Hummingbirds in the Lab

C. New Trends in Studying Bees

D. Thinking of Hummingbirds as Bees

Last month, my good friend Mark got an expensive watch as his birthday present. He showed to everyone in my class proud. I really envied him and every day I ask my mum to buy me an expensive present. However, to my disappointment, I only got a second-hand bike at that special day. So one day while I was riding my “dear” bike back home from school, I passed the shop that my mum worked.

I was only three when my real mom passed away. The last thing I remember about my real mom was watching the ambulance taking her away from us. After my mom died, my dad started abusing my brothers and me. I was sent away to live with one relative after another but no one would ever want to keep me for long. I was miserable almost all of the time. Finally, when I was five, my mom’s sister, Aunt Bonnie, and her husband, Uncle Jesse, said that they would take me in, and they became my legal guardians.

From then on, they became my family. I called Aunt Bonnie Mom and Uncle Jesse Dad. When I was six, Uncle Jesse was diagnosed with cancer and finally died shortly after my seventh birthday. I cried for days after losing him and still clung to the present he gave me on my sixth birthday.

Shortly after Uncle Jesse passed away, we moved to a smaller house in a new town. I spent a lot of time alone because Mom was always working. One summer, the beginning of a miracle happened when my mom met a great and funny guy, David. They got married and now I gained two more brothers.

When I look back on it now, I have come a long way from being a sad and lonely girl to being the person I am today---part of a big, happy family. I can’t imagine what my life would have been like if Aunt Bonnie hadn’t taken me in. She promised to love me and take care of me---no matter what--- and she has done exactly that. I have learned about strength, dedication and love. She has been there to hold me when I’m sick, to help me with homework, to support me when I need her. In return, I love her more than she’ll ever know. Without her in my life, I would have been a motherless child, but because of her I have a great family and the best mom in the world.

1.Why was the author sent to live with her relatives

A. Because her dad didn’t want to raise her.

B. Because her relatives offered to help her.

C. Because her dad treated her badly.

D. Because her family was too poor to keep her.

2.We can infer from the passage that ______.

A. Aunt Bonnie had been teaching the author at home

B. Aunt Bonnie was a strong, dedicated and loving mother

C. the family could hardly make ends meet after Uncle Jesse died

D. David, the new father, was wealthy enough to support the family

3.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage

A. My Unusual ChildhoodB. Thank You, My Mom!

C. My New Dad and MomD. A Motherless Child

When old people live with children and other relatives the relationship is not always a happy one. Even old parents and adult children who live separately can have difficulties. Here the generation gap becomes most visible as the needs and interests of the middle-aged and old diverge. Some middle-aged children are so annoyed by the demands of their parents that they make such comments as “Why don’t the old fools die ”

Although such ugly comments exist, a survey conducted by the American Association of Retired Persons reflects a positive attitude by American population towards the old. That survey showed that 69% adult children have weekly contact with their mothers and 20% have daily contact with their mothers. Other surveys have shown that 40% of adults have face-to face contact with their parents once a week.

The 20xx National Survey of Family and Household (NSFH) showed that 78% of adults view their relationship with their mother and father as excellent. Only 0.03% of those surveyed viewed that relationship as “bad”. The remainders were ambivalent in their perception of their parents. This finding is confirmed by much older studies of the same phenomenon also conducted by the National Survey of Families and Households.

Of those surveyed, 66% contacted their parents once a week or more and only 10% did not contact their parents at all. In part, this is a product of the distance at which adult children live from their parents. The 20xx survey showed that 67% of adult children live within 100 miles of their parents and that 38% live within ten miles of their parents. However, a full 20% of those surveyed live 1,000 miles or more away from their parents.

1.According to the passage, the relationship between most American old people and their adult children is

______.

A. terrible and distantB. annoying and difficult

C. great and closeD. neither good nor bad

2.Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underlined word “diverge” in paragraph 1

A. differB. meetC. existD. transfer

3.From the passage, we learn that ______.

A. generation gap becomes invisible if old parents and adult children live separately

B. relationship between parents and children has become much better than before

C. some old parents would rather die because their children are annoyed at them

D. living far away may lead to people’s less or no contact with their parents

Quite often, no matter how good you are, your success is dependent on how other people such as your boss, peers, clients and customers perceive your communication and responses. So when you come to people who make the key difference between helping you or holding you back, how can you influence and persuade them to give what you want.

Psychological research repeatedly show that people generally make up their minds on whether to help or hinder you based on whether they like you or not. It is human nature. What can you do about it You need to make a good impression on others to ensure they like you and give you what you want. Research again shows that people give opportunities to the people they like best. In fact, most people actually make up their minds about other people in the first five minutes or less of meeting someone. These are called first impressions or “moments of truth.”

Once they make up their minds, they tend to be very reluctant to change their opinions. You hardly have room for error when making that first impression on a new acquaintance. Therefore, whether you are applying for a job, going for an interview, attending a meeting with your boss or peers, or serving a customer, you need to prepare yourself mentally and rehearse how you will manage the first few minutes of your interaction. This includes doing your homework to gather information and researching all possible issues so you will know how to address them should the other party raise them unexpectedly.

It is amazing how poorly some people can come across at the beginning. The worst thing is that they do not even seem to realize it. Having good qualifications and an excellent work performance does not excuse candidates from trying to make good first impression.

1.What is the passage mainly about

A. Making a good first impressionB. People making the key difference

C. Winning strategies for a job interviewD. Persuading people to like you

2.Which of the following is the way by which people tend to decide whether to like other people or not

A. They make quick decisions

B. They prefer people who are experienced

C. They change their opinions frequently

D. They pay much attention to good qualifications

3.Which of the following strategies might help in an interview according to the author

A. Ask the interviewers for homework to do.

B. Know as much as possible about the situation.

C. Show your friendliness and confidence.

D. Do something unexpected to impress interviewers.

4.What will probably be talked about in the next part of the passage

A. Questions that might be asked by the interviewers.

B. Examples of how good first impressions help people succeed.

C. How to win over people who don’t like you at first.

D. Some practical advice to help making a good first impression.

People who love to spend time in their kitchen know that after having a rough day it helps them to relieve stress.

For many years, I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.

“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.

“I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books ”

Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.

But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition (学费). My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought: “There goes my diploma.”

Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret. I didn’t give up hope of her being back to school in some way.

One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That’s the answer,” I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I’ll just sign her up for night school.

Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said: “Mrs. Schantz, why don’t you come back to school ”

I laughed: “There’s no way! I’m 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. “This is only an experiment,” I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.

①综合运用叙述、描写、抒情三种表达方式;

If you have never been on a cruise (乘船游览), it can seem like its own world―with its own rules and secret language. So here we are going to lay out the very basics of going on a cruise.

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?

You may need a passport, but you should take one anyway. Besides the fact that you are going to need an ID card to board the ship in the first place, a lot of ports require one.

How much luggage can I take on board?

For the most part, cruise ships aren’t like planes―there isn’t a strictly regulated amount of luggage you can take with you, and you are not going to be charged for bringing too much. Keep in mind that cabin storage space can be tight.? Everything, including your empty luggage, is going to have to fit inside and you don’t want to be tripping over it for your whole vacation.

Things like guns and knives are banned, but regulations vary from ship to ship about things like irons (generally a no) and hair dryers (generally a yes). Some ships allow you to bring a bottle of wine, but nearly all ban bringing your own hard alcohol.

What’s the process for boarding a cruise ship?

Boarding a cruise ship is like boarding a plane―there are regulations or when to arrive, how to check-in, and what security you have to go through. Most cruise lines have transportation available from the airport; otherwise they normally own a paid parking lot where you can leave your car.

1.What will you have to show when you board a ship in the first place?

A. A credit card. B. A post card.

C. An ID card. D. Luggage.

2.What can you take when you are on a cruise?

A. As much alcohol as you can. B. More luggage than on a plane.

C. Less luggage than on a plane. D. As many guns and knives as you can.

3.Where does the text probably come from?

A. A storybook. B. A guidebook.

C. A book review. D. A science report.

In the western Los Angeles sits the famous city of Hollywood, known as the global center of movie studios and film stars.

The Selig Film Manufacturing Company was the first major film company to come to Hollywood, shooting its first film entitled The Heart of A Race Tout in 1908. The next year the film company built the first permanent film studio.

Although electric lights existed at that time, none were powerful enough to adequately expose film. The best source of illumination for movie production was nature sunlight. Besides the sunny weather, film producers were also drawn to Hollywood because of its open spaces and wide variety of natural scenery.

Another reason was the distance of Southern California from New Jersey, which made it more difficult for Thomas Edison to enforce his film patents. At that time, Edison owned almost all the patents relevant to film production. As a result, in the East, movie producers acting independently out of Edison’s Motion Picture Patents Company were often accused by Edison. But in Los Angeles, things were different. If he sent his men to California, word would usually reach Los Angeles before they did and the movie makers could escape to nearby Mexico.

In 1911, a second movie studio―Nestor Studios, was founded. At about the same time, many film production companies from New York and New Jersey started moving to sunny California because of the good weather.

The first Academy Awards presentation ceremony took place in 1929 in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Tickets were $10 and there were 250 people attending the ceremony.

From about 1930, five major “Hollywood” movie studios in Hollywood, Paramount, RKO, 20th Century Fox, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Warner Bros, owned almost all large theatres throughout the country for the exhibition of their movies. The period between the years 1927 to 1984 was considered the “Golden Age of Hollywood”.

1.The word “illumination” in the third paragraph can be replaced by ________.

A. light B. story

C. patent D. film

2.According to the text, film producers were drawn to Hollywood for the following reasons EXCEPT ________.

A. open spaces B. various scenery

C. unique culture D. sunny weather

3.What can we infer from paragraph 4?

A. Thomas Edison moved his office to Hollywood to enforce his film patents.

B. Movie producers working on the West Coast were never accused by Edison.

C. Edison’s Motion Picture Patents Company owned many studios in Hollywood.

D. Movie makers in Los Angeles could work independently out of Edison’s control.

4.What do we know about the first Academy Awards presentation ceremony?

A. It was held in a restaurant.

B. There were 250 people receiving the awards.

C. There were 250 people present at the ceremony.

D. It was held by five major “Hollywood” movie studios.

In the space of just two years, the app Douyin, created by Beijing-based company ByteDance, has gathered more than half a billion users―around 40% of them outside China―who share short videos of themselves lip-syncing (假唱), cooking, dancing or just being silly. What sets ByteDance apart is its success in the social media category, which is controlled by Facebook, Twitter and Snap―all Western companies.

ByteDance calls itself an artificial intelligence company. It uses machine learning and algorithms (算法) to figure out what people like most and give them more of what they want to see. On Douyin, people can edit and beautify 15-second videos before posting them online. The app has even made a phrase to describe people glued to their customized feeds: “shua Douyin” or “scrolling through Douyin”.? Last year, the company released TikTok, the overseas version of Douyin. ByteDance’s growing video empire has made it the world’s fifth biggest app maker. ByteDance says TikTok and Douyin together have more than 500 million monthly active users.

Investors like ByteDance because its hundreds of millions of users attract a lot of advertising money. The video apps are lucrative because they attract a lot of users in their teens and 20s, who are more generous with the money. ByteDance also makes money through income sharing deals. People on TikTok, for example, can buy digital coins to give to other people on the app―like throwing money in a performer’s tip jar. ByteDance takes a cut of those earnings.

ByteDance’s founder and CEO is Zhang Yiming, a 35-year-old former Microsoft employee. People who have worked with Zhang describe him as someone who thinks deeply about technology and spends much of his free time writing code.

Like Facebook and Twitter, ByteDance is also battling fake news and inappropriate content. ByteDance promises to add thousands more employees to review the content on Douyin.

1.What makes ByteDance so special?

A. Its app challenges similar companies’ rule in Western world.

B. It invented the social media app initially in the world.

C. It is the biggest artificial intelligence company on the earth.

D. It has controlled Facebook, Twitter and Snap.

2.Why is Douyin so popular?

A. It is a new generation hi-tech product.

B. It has both home and overseas version.

C. It is easy and totally free to operate online.

D. It meets the demand of people individually.

3.How does ByteDance make a profit?

A. By charging the users. B. By charging the advertisement.

C. By forcing the users to donate. D. By selling its artificial intelligence.

4.What can be the best title for the text?

A. Douyin, a Popular App

B. ByteDance, a Successful Company

C. Facebook Together with Douyin Is Batting Fake News

D. Twitter Is Helping Douyin Attract More Advertising Money

The dangers of drowsy(昏昏欲睡) driving have been widely known. Now several companies have developed face-tracking technology that can tell when drivers become dangerously sleepy.

Here is how it might work. A camera in your car monitors your facial expression, compares it to a database of expressions and determines if you are likely sleepy or distracted. The car then alerts you to pay attention or pull over.

Affectiva has developed emotion recognition technology that aims to detect when people are just starting to get tired. The idea is to catch the warning signs before drowsiness really strikes. “Actually, when someone is drowsy, that is too late.” Gabi, vice president of Affectiva said. “What if you can see trends in someone’s face about five minutes before they become sleepy?” Affectiva’s program can recognize seven different emotions and 15 facial expressions. Its standards were developed by sifting (筛选) through a database of 4 million faces from 75 countries, said Zijderveld. She suggested that carmakers could coordinate (协调)the program’s facial recognition data with oral reminders, such as sound warnings, or (nonverbal)alerts, like a change of temperature and vibrations (continuous slight shaking movements).

Eyeris is another company working in facial analytics. Modar Alaoui, the company’s CEO, said that its software detects “eye openness” in addition to other facial indicators. The software can also read head position, which may indicate when someone begins to nod off.

These technologies aren’t the first attempt to fight drowsiness behind the wheel. Inventors came up with the similar device “sleeper beeper” to prevent sleep in cars back in 1983. The sleeper beeper was attached to a driver’s ear and would issue a noisy warning when the driver’s head nodded past a certain point. But the latest software would intervene (干涉) earlier and more effectively.

1.The camera in the car can determine if a driver is ________.

A. cold-blooded B. near-sighted

C. bad-tempered D. absent-minded

2.When will drivers be reminded to pay attention or pull over by the face-tracking technology?

A. When they are just beginning to get tired.

B. Five minutes after they become sleepy.

C. When they are really tired.

D. When they are drowsy.

3.It is most likely that the “sleeper beeper” would send out a warning by ________.

A. shaking slightly B. making noise

C. flashing brilliantly D. changing temperature

4.What is the main idea of the text?

A. The dangers of drowsy driving have been widely known.

B. Inventors have tried out the similar device “sleeper beeper”.

C. Several companies have found some ways to fight drowisness behind the wheel.

D. Face-tracking technology for drowsy driving has been developed by several companies.

I think it is safe to say that happiness is the king of emotions. Everyone wants to talk about how to get it, ways to prolong it and the benefits associated with it. Not surprisingly, negative emotions are considered to be bad. 1. But bad feelings can be a valuable way to arouse you to take action. In fact, they can be a surprising source of personal growth by doing the following things.

● Recognize what you are feeling.? There are going to be times when the negative emotions are just temporary. 2. However, if it happens on a frequent basis, your mind is trying to tell you something and you need to handle it.

●3. Once you recognize the negative emotion you are feeling, you need to understand just what is behind it. The trouble is that often the cause of your bad feelings might be hard to see. Is it your home life, work, friends, unrealized dreams or various other frustrations? Take your time figuring it out and get to the root of what is causing the negative emotion.

● Take correct action. In some cases, it might be easy. If someone consistently makes you angry, you can just avoid them. In many other cases, you might need to take even bolder(大胆的) action. 4. Hopefully you have a different opinion on negative emotions now. They are not things designed to only make your life miserable. 5.

A. Understand the causes.

B. Action is the real cause of pain.

C. Acknowledge your true feelings.

D. They are to be avoided at all costs.

E. What they really are is a signal for change.

Now a seventh-grader at East Prairie Elementary School, Dobek recently won the national Discovery Education Lockheed-Martin Beyond Challenge by designing a space station for travelling to Mars.

She says that night watching the lunar eclipse started a strong desire in her that has yet to run out of fuel. So when her teacher Andrea Smeeton received information about the national challenge, Smeeton said she immediately had one student in mind.

“I knew she would love the challenge and that she would go way beyond in her search,” Smeeton said. “She immediately started researching bone density (密度) of astronauts and how to have food on Mars.”

“My design will ensure the safety of the astronauts but also make sure their comfort is out of this world,” Dobek says.

Dobek’s design calls for building the MSS or Mars Storage Station to put the supplies in. It also includes the SGF or Self-Crowing Farm, and she details how it would work with the elements on Mars.

Then there is physical and leisure activity for the astronauts under Dobek’s design. A simulation (模拟装置) allows astronauts to choose their exercise machine and virtual (虚拟的) reality environment. Rooms have circular ceilings so astronauts will be able to watch downloaded shows and even see places on Earth, such as their homes.

It is generally acknowledged that young people from poorer socio-economic backgrounds tend to do fess well in the education system. In an attempt to help the children of poor families, a nationwide program called “Headstart” was started in the US in 1965. A lot of money was poured into it. It Look children into pre-school institutions at the age of three and was supposed to help them succeed in school. But the results have been disappointing because the program began too late. Many children who entered it at three were already behind their peers in language and intelligence and the parents were not involved in the process. At the end of each day, “Headstart” children returned to the same disadvantaged home environment.

To improve the results, another program was started in Missouri that concentrated on parents as the child’s first teachers. This program was based on research showing that working with the family is the most effective way of helping children get the best possible start in life. The four-year study included 380 families who were about to have their first child and represented different socio-economic status, age and family structure. The program involved trained educators visiting and working with the parent or parents and the child. The program also gave the parents some guidance, and useful skills on child development.

At three, the children involved in the “Missouri” program were evaluated with the children selected from the same socio-economic backgrounds and family situations. The results were obvious. The children in the program were more advanced in language development, problem solving and other intellectual skills than their peers. They performed equally well regardless of socio-economic backgrounds or family structure. The one factor that was found to affect the child’s development was the poor quality of parent-child interaction. That interaction was not necessarily bad in poorer families.

The “Missouri” program compares quite distinctly with the “Headstart” program. Without a similar focus of parent education and on the vital importance of the first three years, some evidence indicates that it will not be enough to overcome education unfairness.

1.What caused the failure of the “Headstart” program?

A. The large number of poor families.

B. The disapproval from children.

C. The late start of the program.

D. The long period of time.

2.What do we know about the “Missouri” program?

A. It focused on the children’s first school teachers.

B. It helped the children return to the same home.

C. It made the children improved in many aspects.

D. It gave the parents advice on their development.

3.According to the passage, what is likely to influence children s performance?

A. The number of family members.

B. The teacher-student relationship.

C. The intelligence of their parents.

D. The parent-child communication.

4.How does the author develop the passage?

A. By listing figures.B. By making comparisons.

C. Ry presenting ideas.D. By drawing conclusions.

Rich as a King

William 1, who conquered England some 930 years ago, had wealth, power and an army. Yet although William was very rich by the standard of his time, he had nothing like a flush toilet (抽水马桶), paper towels, or riding lawn mower (除草机). How did he get by?

History books are filled with wealthy people who were poor compared to me. I have storm windows, Croesus did not. Entire nations trembled before Alexander the Great, but he couldn’t buy cat food. Czar Nicholas lacked an electric saw.

Given how much better off I am than so many famous dead people, you’d think I’d be content. The trouble is that, like most people, I compare my wealth with that of living person: neighbors, school classmates, famous TV people. The greed I feel toward my friend Howard’s new kitchen is not reduced by the fact that no kings ever had a refrigerator with glass doors,

There is really no rising or falling standard of living. Over the centuries people simply find different things to feel sad about. You’d think that simply not having disease would put us in a good mood, but no we want a hot bath too.

Of course, one way to achieve happiness would be to realize that even by today’s standards the things I own are pretty nice. My house is smaller than the houses of many investment bankers, but even so it has a lot more rooms than my wife and I can keep clean.

Besides, to people looking back at our era from a century or two in the future, these bankers’ fancy counter tops and my awn worn Formica will seem equally shabby, I can’t keep up with my neighbors right now. But just wait.

1.What docs the underlined phrase “get by” in the first paragraph mean?

A. Succeed as a king.

B. Deal with complains.

C. Get some extra money.

D. Live in a satisfactory way.

2.How many historical figures are mentioned to compare lives in the past and present?

A. 3.B. 4.

C. 5.D. 6.

3.According to the passage, the author intends to______ .

A. tell us to be content with life

B. warn us to live in a simple way

C. leach us to learn lessons from life

D. encourage us lo struggle for wealth

4.What’s the author’s attitude towards life?

A. Doubtful.B. Optimistic.

C. Uncaring.D. Cautions.

In a study recently published in the journal Neuron, researchers found that super memorizers don’t have unusually large brain regions that allow them to remember a lot of information. 1. Here are a few of their favorite tricks that can help you to remember things in your everyday life.

To Remember: New words

Technique: Change routine

In a study, a group of students studied a list of words in two separate sessions. Some studied in a messy room ant some in a neat space. One group of students spent both sessions in the same room, while the other split the sessions between the two environments. During a test, the students who studied in multiple places remembered much more. 2. That includes the time of day, the music in the background, whether you sit or stand, etc.

To Remember: Your PIN

Technique: Count it out

You could use your birthday, or your phone number, but identity thieves have a way of figuring those numbers out. 3. Write a four- wort sentence. Then count the number of letters in each word. For instance, “This is my PIN” =4223.

To Remember: Faces

Technique: Focus on noses

White some super memorizes specialize in associating names with faces, the memory-palace technique doesn’t work as well if the image of the face is changed in any way. Rather than focusing on eyes, as most people do, focus on the centre or to the left of a person’s nose. 4.

To Remember: Facts & figures

Technique: 5.

To learn and remember statistics, reviewing the material repeatedly over a longer time is far more effective than repeating it in a shorter one. If your exam is in a week, study today and then again in a day or two. If it’s a month away, study today and then wait a week before your second session.

A. value exams

B. Give yourself time

C. This allows you to take in their whole face.

D. Their brain structures are in fact the same as the rest of ours.

E. Instead, try this tip from Dominic, an eight-time World Memory Champion.

F. The theory is that your brain links the words to the environment around you.

G. Studies showed that varying other aspects of your environment can also help.
