在宋代有一则民间流传的故事：一位秀才的母亲到地藏菩萨前许愿，没想到竟然心想事成，儿子高中了状元。但是这位状元郎却并不信佛，而且鬼心眼特别多，他得知母亲要带他来九华还愿，便翻阅了一些史书，知道地藏菩萨是在唐代时期示寂的，于是心生一计：母亲跪拜藏菩萨时，就把母亲的金钗拨下往地藏菩萨真身的脚上插。
这时奇怪的现象出来了，插进去的金钗怎么拔也拔不出来，状元郎便心生害怕，再次使尽力气也拨不出来。状元惶恐，对地藏菩萨像说：“说你无佛却有佛!”话还没说完，金钗就随手被拨了出来，同时，在金钗拨出来的地方涌出了血浆。
状元郎极为骇异，便急急逃离九华山。当时九华山的'护法神是韦陀菩萨。韦陀菩萨的性情暴烈，见到有人对地藏菩萨不恭，就要去惩罚。地藏菩萨不许，并说这状元郎是他当年身上的一个虱子，不小心被他拍死了。状元郎今生的刁难，是有因缘的。
韦陀菩萨听了，依然是怒气未平。地藏菩萨算出状元郎已经走出了九华二十余里地，就对韦陀菩萨说：“你执意惩罚，只追五里吧。追上了任你惩罚，追不上就算了。”
韦陀菩萨怒火中烧，根本没有听清楚地藏菩萨的话，就点头答应，于是急急追赶状元。追到一个叫五溪的地方，看见状元仓惶逃窜，就一鞭子把状元打死了。
韦陀菩萨打死状元后，回来复命。地藏王见韦陀菩萨气头上把五里听成了五溪，竟追出了二十里打死了状元，心生不忍，就让韦陀菩萨到别处护法，把他赶出了九华山。但是佛教不能没有护法，于是就请来道教的灵官作为护法神。至今地藏菩萨的肉身宝殿前的护法还是灵官。
话说韦陀菩萨离开九华山之后，许多地方都不肯收留，路过湖州，没想到湖州竟然成了收留韦陀菩萨的地方，因此，湖州便成为了韦陀菩萨的人间道场，并且在湖州，还有一个寺院就叫韦陀寺。
“匈奴未灭，何以家为?”
霍去病是平阳(今山西临汾西南)人。他是武帝卫皇后的姐姐少儿和霍仲儒的非婚生子，其舅父卫青是抗击匈奴的名将。汉朝的大将军。西汉初年，北方匈奴屡为边患。武帝时国力强盛，开始对匈奴的侵略进行反击。元朔六年(前123)，年仅18岁的霍去病以校尉的身份，跟随卫青出征。他率领800骑兵长途奔袭，斩获匈奴余人，战功冠于全军，被汉武帝封为冠军侯。在元狩二年(前121)，元狩四年(前119)与匈奴军的战斗中，霍去病显露出杰出的军事才能，共斩俘匈奴10万余人。汉武帝很喜欢这个名将，曾下令给他建造府第，但霍去病却拒绝了。他说：“匈奴未灭，何以家为?”这句洋溢着爱国激情的名言，世世代代激励着后人。元狩六年(前117)，年仅24岁的霍去病猝然去世。武帝十分痛惜，在自己将来的陵墓茂陵旁边为他修建了一座状如祁连山的坟墓，用以表彰他抗击匈奴的卓著功绩。
项羽自任西楚霸王
汉元年(前206)，项羽入关后，派人向楚怀王报告并请示封王事情。怀王坚持过去的盟约：“率先进入并平定关中的为王”，任命刘邦统治关中。项羽对此气愤不已，于是名义上仍尊奉楚怀王为义帝，让他仍旧居住在盱眙(今江苏盱眙东北)。二月，项羽自立为西楚霸王，掌管梁、楚地方9郡，设都彭城(今江苏徐州)，并分封了18个诸侯王。 项羽本来不想让刘邦为关中王，又担心违反背约之名，于是与范增策划说：“巴、蜀地方道路险峻，秦朝被流放的人都居住蜀地，而且巴、蜀两地也地处关中。”因此封刘邦为汉王，统治巴、蜀、汉中等地，设都南郑(今陕西汉中)。并将关中一分为三，分封给秦朝的3个降将，借以阻挡汉王东向的通道：章邯为雍王，掌管咸阳以西，设都废丘(今陕西兴平东南);司马欣为塞王，掌管咸阳以东、黄河以西，设都栎阳(今陕西临潼东北);董翳为翟王，掌管上郡，设都高奴(今陕西延安东北)。
公元927年，25岁的耶律德光成为辽国的第二代皇帝，当时，中原地区正是五代十国的混乱时期，民不聊生。耶律德光养精蓄锐，一心梦想要吞并中原。
9年后，机会终于来了，44岁的大汉奸石敬瑭为了取后唐而代之，以割让幽云十六州、岁绢30万匹、认34岁的耶律德光为父等条件，换得耶律德光出兵帮他灭了后唐，建立了后晋小王朝。石敬瑭死后，他的侄子石重贵继位，向耶律德光提出了“称孙不称臣”的要求，耶律德光大怒，以此为借口发兵南侵中原，很快就灭了后晋。但是中原的百姓并没有屈服，各路武装纷纷抗击侵略者，小股辽兵不断遭到歼灭，令耶律德光发出“我没想到中原人如此难制”的感叹，不得不下令撤退。
公元947年，45岁的耶律德光在撤离中原途中染上一种热疾，太医让他远离女色，他却将太医臭骂了一通：“你们都是不学无术，我得了热病，正要女色泄火，怎么能远离女色呢!”终因纵欲无度，走到栾城杀胡林时，口吐鲜血，一命呜呼。这时，远在辽国都城上京，已获报耶律德光病危的述律太后传来懿旨：“生要见人，死要见尸。”这可难坏了伴驾的文武大臣，当时正是炎夏，保存尸体谈何容易。
正在文武大臣和太医们束手无策时，一位御厨出了个主意：干脆把皇帝做成“耙”吧。“耙”是什么呢?原来北方游牧民族多喜食牛羊肉，有时候杀了一只牛或羊后，一时吃不掉，碰上夏天，牧民就把牛羊的内脏掏空，用盐卤上，成了不会腐烂的“耙”，相当于中原地区的“腊肉”。这个主意一出，显然有把皇帝当牲畜处理的意思，但无奈之下，文武大臣和太医们也只好照御厨的意见办，不过既然是用皇帝的尸体做成的“耙”，就不是一般的“耙”，而是“帝耙”——我国历史上唯一的一位木乃伊皇帝。
明末历史上发生了两件小事。公元1583年，明万历十一年，辽东总兵李成梁率兵攻打建州女真部的古勒城。明军遭到激烈抵抗，久攻不下，于是女真人塔克世和父亲两人冒险进城劝降。没想到劝降未成。此时突然城破，明军冲进去不分青红皂白，竟把塔克世父子也杀了。父子俩本来是为明朝做事，不料遭此惨祸，明朝解释这是“误杀”，给塔克世的儿子赔了30匹马了事。误杀了两个边塞草民，对于大明王朝来说，简直就不算个事儿，谁也没把它放在心上。再说另一件小事。
在塔克世父子被杀45年后，公元1628年，崇祯皇帝即位了。此时明朝已经风雨飘摇，崇祯接手的是一个烂摊子，国内民变四起，外有强敌虎视。内忧外患，连年征战，耗资巨大，朝廷陷入了财政危机。崇祯刚刚登基，便下令在全国整顿驿站，裁撤驿卒，以节省财政支出。驿站的主要职能是传递公文，并为过境的官员提供服务，驿卒就是这个机构中最底层的人，干活辛苦收入极低。裁员进展顺利，也收到了预期效果，据说仅此一项，每年就能为朝廷节省白银68万两。精减机构，节流开源，本来不失为明智之举，但是朝廷只管裁减，却不负责安置。与皇帝的江山相比，百姓的死活显然是小事一桩，但这对银川驿站的驿卒们来说，却是天大的事!当时西北连年大旱，饿殍遍野，树皮都吃光了，人吃人的惨剧时有发生。
在这种情况下，失去了生活来源，要么等死，要么揭竿而起。饿死是死，造反也是死，两条都是死路，要做出选择其实一点都不难：与其做饿死鬼不如做饱死鬼，运气好的话，说不定还能封妻荫子，留名千古。
在这批下岗的驿卒当中，有一个名叫李自成的年轻人。李白成是陕西米脂县人，世代贫农，小时候给地主家放过羊，长大后在银川驿站谋了个驿卒的差事，好歹能混口饭吃，没想到崇祯新官上任三把火，一纸令下，就断了他的生路。康熙《米脂县志》记载：“明末李自成，银川驿之马夫耳。因裁驿站，饥荒，无所得食，奋臂一呼，卒至土崩，不可救!”李自成走投无路。被迫走上了革命道路。1644年春天，李白成率农民军攻入北京紫禁城，顺便抢了崇祯的皇帝宝座。当年的银川驿卒以彼之道还彼之身，崇祯终于尝到了下岗的滋味，绝望中上吊自杀。
崇祯恐怕做梦都想不到，当年裁掉一个小小的驿卒，竟为自己培养出一位掘墓人!后悔也没用了，如果不是打仗缺钱，崇祯也不会想到裁撤驿卒。跟谁打仗呢?明朝当时最主要的敌人，就是山海关外的清军。那么清军又是怎么冒出来的呢?这就要提到61年前发生的那件小事，因为明军当年“误杀”了两个女真人，即前面提到的塔克世和他的父亲。塔克世有个儿子，名叫努尔哈赤。史书记载，努尔哈赤以十三副遗甲含恨起兵，从“含恨”二字不难看出，他为什么要造反。杀父之仇，不共戴天!但他不敢与明朝公然为敌，只能暗中积蓄力量，苦心经营。几十年后，努尔哈赤统一了女真各部，建立后金政权，雄踞关外。努尔哈赤死后，他的儿子继位，改国号为大清。清军野心勃勃，开始逐鹿中原，不料被明朝精锐挡在山海关外，无法前进半步。
恰在此时，李白成完成了对明朝的最后一击，天赐良机，清军趁机挥师入关。1644年的北京城，就像一个热闹非凡的大戏台，你方唱罢我登场。李自成抢了崇祯的位置，可惜只当了42天的皇帝，又被清军赶走，来也匆匆去也匆匆。紫禁城再次易主，大清顺治皇帝登极，他就是努尔哈赤的孙子。61年前，努尔哈赤的父亲和祖父被明军误杀，只赔了30匹马!两只“蝴蝶”，轻轻扇动了几下翅膀，微风吹到1644年，终于引发了一场龙卷风，大明帝国随风飘散。
中国有几个邻国其国名是由中国皇帝命名的而且沿用至今，委实有点意思。
日本(Japan)
在我国南北朝时宋国范晔所著的《后汉书》中说，汉光武帝刘秀时在接见东瀛的使者时，封其国的国王为倭王，所以有了“汉委倭王”之记载。“倭”是对日人的最早称呼。“倭”字的意思包括：难看的，丑陋的，矮小的;说话，办事罗哩罗嗦的;单纯，听话的意思。对友邦如此称呼确实欠妥。
据唐人张守节的《史记正义》记载，“武后改倭国为日本国。”
为什么武则天会将倭国改成日本国呢?日本是“日之所本”的意思。日本在中国东方遥远的海上，从中国人的视觉上来感受，似乎正在太阳升起的地方。《山海经·海外东经》说：“谷上有扶桑，十日所浴。”《淮南子天文训》也说：“日出于谷，浴于成池，拂于扶桑，是谓晨明。”不管怎么说，日本国比倭国好多了，日本人是可以接受的。幸亏武则天办了件好事，否则日本国仍然称倭国的话反倒嘲笑了中国人自己。因为如今小日本人的平均身高已超过中国人了，日本人平均身高170.7公分，虽然比世界第一的荷兰人(182.5公分)相差不少，但却比平均身高仅169，7公分的中国人反而多出了一公分。
朝鲜(Korea)
1361年11月，中国的红巾军攻陷高丽国的开京。后，高丽万户李成桂(以后的朝鲜太祖)率2000精兵出其不意地攻入开京，红巾军大败，遁走鸭绿江，退回辽阳。立下大功的李成桂也就此逐渐掌握了兵权，并最终废掉了国王，自立为王，高丽国就此灭亡。为了争取明朝的支持，李成桂派使臣向明朝称臣，他向朱元璋递交了国书，新人新气像，李成桂自然要废除高丽国的称呼。这个新的王朝需要一个新的名字。称王后的李成桂拟定了两个国号——“朝鲜”和“和宁”，请朱元璋定夺，朱元璋选了“朝鲜”二字，取“朝日鲜明之国”之意。这就是朝鲜国名的由来了。朱元璋还亲自下令：朝鲜为永不征讨之国，明和朝鲜正式以鸭绿江作为边界。而朝鲜尊明为天朝，并采用明年号，此后朝鲜的历代国王继位后都要派使臣至明朝。得到明朝皇帝的确认并赐予封号。越南(Vietnam)
历史上的越南长期臣服于中国，唐朝调露元年(679年)所置之安南都护府(治所在今河内)。南宋时，才有了“安南国”见于记载。
可为什么到了清朝的嘉庆年间会将改“安南国”改名为“越南国”呢?
先是，安南国王阮福映向清朝请求以“南越”二字锡封。嘉庆皇帝考虑了老半天觉得不妥。南越，包括甚广，广东，广西的大片土地都在其中，而安南国王阮福映所管辖的地盘不过是交趾故地，怎能称得上“南越”?安南国是先有越裳旧地，后才有安南全境。于是。嘉庆皇帝赐予安南国王“越南”的国号。“以‘越’字冠其上。仍其先世疆域;以‘南’字列于下，表其新赐藩封。且在百越之南。”1803年，清朝嘉庆皇帝诏改安南为越南，命广西按察使册封阮福映为嘉隆帝，任越南国王，向清朝称臣。从此。“越南”的国名一直沿用至今。
