It gives me a great pleasure to recommend Mr. Cheng as a transfer to the School of Business Administration of your University in the summer quarter of 19XX.
During academic year 19XX-19XX, he was a student in our Department, World College of Journalism. I found him very diligent and intelligent. He often participated in extracurricular activities contributing a great deal to community affairs.
Though Mr. Cheng graduated from this college 5 years ago, he keeps, contact with me very often. Worthy of mention also is his personality, honest, reliable, responsible and mature.

bbsThis letter is intended to serve as a college recommendation for Ezra Edlarruti. I have been acquainted with Ezra for four years but came to know him well last year, as he was in the one class that I taught, a thirteen-student junior English class.
Last spring, while he was singing the lead in “The Marriage of Figaro, ” Ezra became especially interested in a short story that we read as a class, Albert Camus's “The Guest.” It is a challenging story for any reader, and Ezra became interested in the subtleties of interpreting it, especially in the difficulties inherent in the translation of such a story. What did Camus really mean to say and how might his intentions have been compromised by its English translation? Ezra read the original, French, version of the story and then wrote a superb analysis of the compromises inherent in its English translation. His essay was flawless -- his wording apt, and his analysis insightful, logical and comprehensive. Some of our English faculty can't write so well.
Students and faculty often remark that Ezra is blessed with considerable talent. What many of them overlook is how hard Ezra works to cultivate his talent, whether it be the development of his
beautiful voice for an operatic performance or of his writing skills as he works through an essay. I know of the effort that he put into book reviews of 1984 and Animal Farm because he shared early drafts with me. I also appreciate the time that he put into his analysis of The Guest because he stopped by periodically to share his enthusiasm for the project and his progress with it.
In over twenty-five years of teaching, I have known other students with talent equivalent to Ezra's. Many of them lacked his good nature and humility, and few demonstrated the genuine intellectual curiosity that Ezra has exhibited over and over -- a curiosity that is often accompanied by his excitement or enthusiasm for an idea, an author, a literary work or the lead role in a challenging operatic performance.
When I decided to set up a debate on Henry David Thoreau's “Civil Disobedience, ” regarding the role of government in our lives today, in an effort to have the class appreciate more fully the contemporary implications of Thoreau's sophisticated essay, it was Ezra who was most helpful in creating a resolution that would lead to that appreciation. Ezra, to no one's surprise, then agreed to argue on any side of the debate.
Ezra is a motivated young man of numerous talents and considerable self discipline. He is fun-loving, likable, enthusiastic, trusting and trustworthy.

As the Dean of Stonewell College, I have had the pleasure of knowing Hannah Smith for the last four years. She has been a tremendous student and an asset to our school. I would like to take this
opportunity to recommend Hannah for your graduate program.
I feel confident that she will continue to succeed in her studies. Hannah is a dedicated student and thus far her grades have been exemplary. In class, she has proven to be a take-charge person who is able to successfully develop plans and implement them.
Hannah has also assisted us in our admissions office. She has successfully demonstrated leadership ability by counseling new and prospective students. Her advice has been a great help to these
students, many of whom have taken time to share their comments with me regarding her pleasant and encouraging attitude.
It is for these reasons that I offer high recommendations for Hannah without reservation. Her drive and abilities will truly be an asset to your establishment. If you have any questions regarding this recommendation, please do not hesitate to contact me.

To Whom It May Concern:
This letter is to serve as my formal recommendation for Andrew Fuller. Andrew has been my direct assistant for several years. He has been interested in obtaining an MBA degree for some time now and I feel that he would be an excellent candidate for your esteemed program.
During his time here, Andrew has consistently demonstrated a strong work ethic and a dedication to success. His efforts have produced high quality results time and time again. Last year, Andrew developed and successfully implemented a plan to streamline our production department. The plan was a major undertaking, requiring a great deal of thought and effort on Andrew?s behalf.
Though Andrew is my assistant, he is also in an unofficial leadership role. Many of his co-workers seek his advice and support. Andrew is always there for them and is quite comfortable in the role. I feel his budding leadership abilities will become even more effective in a business school setting.
For these reasons, I highly recommend Andrew Fuller as a candidate for your MBA program. If you have any questions regarding Andrew or this recommendation, please contact me.
Sincerely,
John Thomas Operations Manager Tri-State Directories

How I met jubet is a rather interesting story. In August , I was doing a study abroad at Fudan
University in Shanghai , China for my MBA program from Emory University. I made a quick stop in India on my way back to the US. I was on a flight from Beijing to New Delhi and had carried along Al Ries and Jack Trout’s Positioning: The Battle for Your Mind to read on the journey. Incidentally, jubet was on the same flight, reading the same book. We started talking and I took an instant liking to Bijie – she was friendly and in spite of being a lot younger than me, we were able to hold a wonderful conversation. Over the next several hours amongst other things, we spoke about out love for reading, our interest in music and our passion for traveling. We enjoyed each other’s company so much that at the end of our journey, we decided to exchange numbers and we kept in touch. Over the last 2 years, I have gotten to know jubet as a friend, as well as a mentee.
I find jubet to be a very focused individual. When we met two years back, she had asked me about studying in the US and the application process. At that time she was only about to start college in China, but was already thinking about her future. She regularly asked for advice on how to best prepare herself for the process. jubet is a good student, but is always striving to be better and challenge herself. She has a keen interest in immersing herself in the culture of USA and experiencing the diversity that one can only
experience here. As her mentor, it makes me proud that she has stayed focused for two years and is working towards her goal of studying in the USA.
jubet is always working on improving herself – she is able to handle a strict critique. With English being jubet second language, there are sometimes grammatical mistakes in her writing.jubet takes any
constructive feedback I give her in her stride and always tries to improve herself. She never lets this criticism discourage her from writing. Over the last two years I have seen her writing improve to a great extent. While jubet and I have met only once for a few hours, I feel like I know her for a long time. Most people I know would have no motivation to stay in touch with a stranger they met on a flight, but jubet is
different. jubet always takes the initiative to keep in touch –she has not let the distance in our cultures, languages or geographies get in the way. To me this is the mark of a committed individual.
Her knowledge, interest in the field of business, and excellent grades make her an outstanding candidate for a business degree. Her congeniality and warmth makes it a pleasure for anyone to be around her. I believe that jubet is a hardworking, focused and committed individual who will be an asset to your University.

I have prepared this letter for Xuesheng Hao to use as a letter of reference for her application for admission to a graduate program in North America. I will provide her with specific letters when these are required.
I am professor of biology at XYZ University (San Francisco, USA) and have taught there for more than 30 years. At the time of writing, I am on sabbatical leave and have been teaching and conducting research at Chongqing University, China. Xuesheng Hao was one of my students in the course Ecology (#7900480) which I taught in the English language.
Thirty students took this course and Xuesheng Hao was the most outstanding in every respect. I have been told by a colleague at Chongqing University that her year class is unusually good, having several strong students. I think this is true – but even in a class with several strong students, Xuesheng Hao was
exceptional, having many strengths.
Firstly, Xuesheng Hao has excellent command of English. She comprehends quickly and expresses herself clearly. Her vocabulary is extensive, and her diction is good.
Secondly, she has an inquisitive mind of the kind that is necessary for someone to become a successful
scientist. She was the only student in the class who was clearly driven to an interest in the subject of ecology by curiosity about the natural world. Others were variously motivated, including curiosity about me as a teacher, but no one else asked questions that dug deeply into the theoretical heart of the subject. Questioning a teacher is not a usual part of the learning culture of China, but I explained at the outset of the course that I would welcome critical questions. Xuesheng Hao understood the concept of constructive criticism, and enjoyed the intellectual challenge.
Thirdly, she is a volunteer by nature. At times she translated some of the more complex ideas for those students who had less facility with English. She was also one of the several students who took part in all of the activities of the course. I had not taught in China previously and initially created an over-ambitious
program containing too much independent work. Chinese students spend much longer in classrooms than do their counterparts in North America, thereby having little time for independent study. Xuesheng Hao not only kept up with my initial expectations, but reveled in the opportunity to read primary scientific literature, give a presentation, and attempt field research.
Finally, she has a pleasant easy-going personality, and an interest in cautious adventure. She has been raised in a hard-working intellectual family, and has no shortage of the Chinese traits of patience, endurance, duty and dedication. For these reasons she will adapt successfully to the learning and research culture of North America, and will readily fit in among her student peers.
For all of these reasons, I recommend Xuesheng Hao without reservation as a student with outstanding potential to excel in a graduate program. She has bright prospects.
Sincerely,
Philip Stone

Dear Prof. Ingemann:
As you can appreciate from my signature my area of expertise hardly qualifies me for writing a letter of recommendation for a prospective graduate student in your department. However, I have a serious and long standing interest in languages. After 3 years of Chinese studies at IUPUI, I entered an intensive Chinese language course during a sabbatical in Beijing last winter and spring. Ms. Chen who wishes to enter graduate studies in your department became my tutor. I feel strongly that Ms. Chen has unusual talents and abilities qualifying her for your program and I hope that you will consider my observations and remarks in evaluating her application.
Ms. Chen is an outstanding teacher. She teaches all the subtleties of Chinese word usage and syntax so effectively because her knowledge of English is so superior. Her English conversation was particularly
impressive considering that she has had very limited opportunities to meet native English-speaking people in the past.
Our many hours of lectures became more sophisticated with time,
emphasizing more and more the striking differences between the literal meaning of words in either language compared to the meaning of the same words when used in common everyday language.
Because of her undergraduate thesis work and her one and a half years of research employment creating improved software for the correct
