*** 10/6/ Dear Ms. Emma,   I got The Black Circle at library (I forgot which one. I think it was San Jose Public Library).  My mom had to request it since it wasn’t there yet. I think I was the first person to read that copy of the book.   The Madrigals are the most powerful and most feared branch of Cahills. I wonder why they aren’t shown on the Cahill Coat of Arms.  Everybody fears the Madrigals and tries to steer clear of them, but in Cairo, Egypt, in Beyond the Grave, the Ekat’s stronghold gets robbed by Madrigals.  Dan and Amy also think The Man in black, who has been following them since the beginning, is a Madrigal.  Dan and Amy’s parents died in a fire.   I am reading Monkey, by Jeff Stone, right now.  It is a sequel to Tiger, the first book.  It’s actually the same story, just from different points of view.   In this book, Fu finds out that the drunkard from the village, who had rescued him in the first book, might be his father.  Malao also finds out that Seh looks a lot like Tonglong, and Seh might be Tonglong’s son.   At the end of the book, Tsung and Ying fight each other until Tonglong, Ying’s Number-One-in-Command tells them to stop.  Both Ying and Tsung fall into unconsciousness, and Tonglong seizes his chance to take over Ying’s army.  I think Tonglong is helping the five monks, and he has waited a long time to have an opportunity to take over Ying’s command.   I am now reading Queste, by Angie Sage.  It is about a boy named Septimus Heap who gets sent on a Queste, but tries to find Nicko and Snorri, who were lost in time, hundreds of years ago, instead.   There is a character in the book, Ephaniah Grebe, who gets cursed and is, and will be forever, half-man-half-rat.  It must be very hard for him to live like that.  Especially since he can’t talk, and everybody screams when they see him.     Your Student,   Ben *** 10/13/2009 Dear Ben,   I enjoyed reading your observations of Beyond the Grave and Monkey.  I can tell you think deeply about your books!   I loved hearing how Angie Sage gets her ideas.  It must really help you better understand Queste knowing a little about her and where she grew up.   What is happening with Septimus’ quest to find his brother Nicko?  What is Nicko’s world like?   Angie Sage really gets into her character.  You mentioned the fate of Ephaniah Grebe.  Any other interesting ones?     Sincerely,   Ms. Emma

真诚的, 爱玛老师 ***     11/4/ Dear Ms. Emma,   Patrick volunteered for the army.  He said that he was a complete idiot for doing that.  I think when he enlisted he didn’t know how horrible war actually was.  After he was in the war for a few months, he actually forced himself not to make any new friends, just in case they died.  I don’t really know if Patrick believed the U.S. was right about helping South Vietnam.   Right now, I am reading The Random House Book of HUMOR for Children.  It consists of funny short stories, or chapters or sections of other books.   In Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s Magic, I don’t think the children should always say “Oh, I thought you said…” Even though it is funny, it drives the parents crazy, and is annoying. In The Elephant’s Child, I think the adults don’t always have to spank the Elephant’s Child whenever he gets curious, or asks a question.   In The Moth and the Star, the father moth thinks that if your wings get singed, or burned, it is a very big honor.  But the child moth didn’t listen and didn’t get burned at all, which let him live far longer than his father or brothers.   In The Fools of Chelm and the Stupic Carp, I think the people of Chelm are very stupid. It started when Zeinvel Ninny brought a live carp to Gronam Ox, the leader of Chelm.  The carp slapped Ox with its tail, so Ox got angry.  He held lots of trials, but couldn’t decided what to do with it.  Finally, he decided the carp should be drowned.  Everybody thought that was a great idea.   Sincerely,   Ben *** 11/9/2009 Dear Ben,   The Elephant’s Child is originally from Just So Stories for Little Children by Rudyard Kipling, the author of The Jungle Book.  These types  of stories are called pourquoi stories because they tell accounts of how various phenomena came about. What phenomena does The Elephant’s Child describe?   The Moth and the Star is a fable by James Thurber and was first printed in the story collection Fables for Our Time in 1940. This one teaches a lesson.  What lesson did the young moth learn?   How many stories have you read from the book?   Sincerely,   Ms. Emma

真诚的,   爱玛老师 ***   12/15/2009 Dear Ms. Emma, Here are some of his mistakes or setbacks: When he tried to start a fire, his fuel was wrong and it took a while to make one.  Another one was when he made a fishing spear; he didn’t aim right and always missed.  Some of his triumphs were: When he started his first fire, when he first killed a fish, and the first time he killed and ate actual meat instead of fish every day.  It didn’t really say much about when he went back to the real world, but it did say that he remained lean and wiry for several more years and also since he left the woods, he always thought carefully before saying or doing anything, and he also noticed much more than before. Right now I am reading Irish Immigrants in America.  It is a You Choose Book, you can choose what you want to do in the book. In this book, I learned that being an Irish immigrant at that time was very hard.  None of the jobs paid much money to them, and a lot of the jobs were dangerous.  I just finished The Japanese American Internment, by Rachael Hanel, which is also a You Choose Book. In this book I think it is very unfair that so many Japanese Americans were forced out of jobs and lives into Relocation Camps.  Also, even though they didn’t do anything wrong, even after the war, they still faced lots of discrimination. Right now I am reading Flush, by Carl Hiaasen.  It is about a boy named Noah, trying to prove that Dusty Muleman, whose ship was sunk by Noah’s dad, was illegally dumping sewage into the water. Noah’s dad loves the environment and animals, and a lot of times, if he sees someone mistreating animals or polluting the environment, he would overreact.  I think it is unfair that he was jailed and couldn’t prove what Dusty was doing.   Your student,   Ben *** 1/4/ Dear Ben, Have you read other books by Carl Hiaasen?  He was born and raised in Florida and even went to the University of Florida. He later went to work for the newspaper, The Miami Herald, where he wrote the Crime Section.  He got many of his book ideas from real life crime stories in Florida. How do Noah and Abbey help their dad prove Dusty Muleman was dumping sewage from the boat’s holding tank?   Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的,   爱玛老师 *** 10/27/ Dear Ms. Emma, Yes, I do like his style of writing.  It’s written so that it actually sounds like someone is telling the story in his own words. It is very easy to understand his books.  My favorite book by him is The World’s Dumbest Crooks. Right now, I am reading The Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty. The book is tragic with lots of deaths and injuries. About half he whole platoon died against the NVA in two days. Rotgut, one of the original guys in Patrick’s squad, just came back.  Everybody had thought he was dead when he was shot two times.  Everybody was relieved. I can’t believe how many people died in two months.  Only four of the squad members since Patrick came (including Patrick) are still in the squad.  The others are either dead, or in the hospital. The ending was really sad.  The place where Patrick had been was bombed by NVA rockets.  Patrick’s best friend Bebop died.  Another one of his friends, the Professor, lost both his legs, and he was blinded.  Patrick had a really serious injury too, so they sent him home.  He was very sad.   Your student,                   Ben *** 11/2/2009 Dear Ben, The Vietnam War was a military conflict that started in 1959 and ended in 1975!  We, and other anti-communist countries, were fighting the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese.  We started fighting in this war to prevent the communist from taking over S. Vietnam. About 60,000 US soldiers died.  That’s about the size of our city.  I was not surprised to read that many of Patrick’s squad members were dead or injured.  Many soldiers came home in wheelchairs, with limbs amputated, blind, or without their hearing.  These soldiers saw horrible, horrible things that they could never forget. 3-4 million Vietnamese died.  The U.S. soldiers went into villages and just shot everyone (innocent people) while they were looking for the victory. Did Patrick enlist (volunteer) in the war or was he drafted?  Most people were drafted and forced to fight.  Did Patrick believe the United States was right to go in and help the S. Vietnamese people?  Many people here did not.   Sincerely,   Ms. Emma

真诚的, 爱玛老师 *** 3/9/ Dear Ms. Emma, No, I haven’t seen the movie, but I’ve heard people talk about it lots of times. I think a good friendship is better than having a lot of money, but I would have both if I could. No, I don’t think I’ve read any other book by Kate DiCamillo. I’m reading Max, by James Patterson.  Total, the Flock’s talking dog, is very irritated at humans for treating dogs like they do.  But he likes the French C at least most of the restaurants in France allow dogs to eat inside.  I think we should treat animals better. I am reading The Tripods 1: The White Mountains. It is a Science Fiction book about a boy named Will traveling to the White Mountains to hide from the Tripods (Author: John Christopher). The Tripods are big, three legged machines.  Some people think they, came from outer space and enslaved human kind, and some people think they were just thinking machines that the Ancients (People before the Tripods took over) built that rebelled.  It reminded me of the movie series Terminator, where machines built by humans revolted. I am reading The Seal of Solomon, by Rick Yancey.  It is about Alfred Kropp trying to save the world with the Seal of King Solomon.   Sincerely,   Ben ***   3/15/2010 Dear Ben, Your letters are very insightful and reflective.  You have great ideas and you express them at a high level C higher than 5th grader. I absolutely agree with you --- friendship is better than having a lot of money.  Money really doesn’t make you happy, but your friends can.  You only need enough money to meet your needs.  Once your needs are met, more money won’t make you happy. Go to college C go to Clemson C and you will have plenty of $. I read White Mountains when I was in high school because there was very little SF for young people to read.  I didn’t have a teacher making me read SF in 5th grade.  I loved it!  What did Will realize/learn about life? Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的, 爱玛老师 *** 2/23/2010 Dear Ms. Emma, I think there are 121 rules in the contest including players have to wear blue, trackers yellow, and referees black-and-white.  Also there are rules like if you are caught by trackers you have to remain in detention for 72 hours before continuing. Yes, I recognized Paris, Moscow, and all of the countries he went to. I am now reading Maximum Ride: School’s Out - Forever. It is the sequel to The Angel Experiment. In this book Max always thinks of Jeb as a traitor and she hates him.  But I think even though he betrays her and has orders to “retire” her, he actually loves her (I just found out he is her father.) I just finished Maximum Ride: Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports. Ari, Max’ Eraser half-brother, first always wanted to kill the flock and capture Max.  But after he toured her around Itex, he didn’t hate Max anymore.  Max didn’t hate him anymore either.  I think they both knew the other person didn’t do what they did on purpose. Sincerely, Ben *** 3/1/2010 Dear Ben, Max has discovered some family secrets.  What do you know about her mother? Why does Max always have to save the world?  Save it from what? How is the School able to track her and the rest of flock? It seems to me that her day is trying to escape the Erasers, trying to keep the Itex Corporation from knowing where she is and trying to keep others from joining the evil side. Am I close? Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的, 爱玛老师 *** 10/13/ Dear Ms. Emma, I already read to the part about when Septimus, Jenna, and Beetle reach The House of Foryx, where All Time Do Meet, also where they hope Nicko and Snorri are.  The way The House of Foryx works, is that anybody who enters it, is in no time at all.  The only way out is when somebody else opens the door from outside.  Then, you go out.  But when you go out you enter the time the person who is opening the door is in.  Septimus, Jenna, and Beetle hope Nicko, and Snorri didn’t go out already, otherwise it would be hard to find them. I like the ending where Marcia Overstrand, the ExtraOrdinary Wizard rescue them from The House of Forys along with Nicko, and Snorri.  Then they go home and Sarah Heap sees Hicko and they’re all very happy. There are other interesting characters too, like Merrin Meredith.  People used to think he was Septimus Heap, but now he was nobody.  Merrin was into Darke Magyk and he stole the two-faced ring from DomDaniel, his old master.  Whoever has this ring will never die.  But even though he is un-destructible, he isn’t brave and is scared of a lot of things. Right now I am reading Snake, by Jeff Stone.  It is about She, Fu, and the other monks joining with some of their parents, including Mong (She’s dad), Sanfu (Fu’s dad), and others, facing Ying and his allies together. Tonglong had betrayed Ying and tricked the Emperor into thinking it was Ying’s fault that Yue, the Emperor’s nephew, died.  His punishment was to be stripped of his army (Tonglong would take his place), and sit in jail until his flesh rots. I think Ying deserves his fate. I am reading The Rescuers, by Allan Zullo.  It is real people in real situations risking their lives to save others. In “The Flood and the Fury”, how Peter saved his family and survived Hurricane Katrina, reminded me of a big earthquake in Si Chuan, China, in .  A small boy had jumped into an already collapsing building and pulled his friends out.  They all survived.  Chinese honored the boy and he appeared in the Opening Ceremony of the 2008 Olympics. I just started The Journal of Patrick Seamus Flaherty, which is about Patrick in the Vietnam War. Your student, Ben *** 10/26/2009 Dear Ben, Your letter was interesting to read and very informative!  You really explained your thinking! The Rescuers by Allan Zullo sounds like an inspiring book recounting the stories of those who risked their lives for others.  I remember the boy from China and his story.  I did see him honored at the Olympics. Allan Zullo has written many books about unbelievable true stories.  Many of these books are about true ghost stories.  Do you like his style of writing?  How would you describe it?   Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的,   爱玛老师 *** 4/27/2010 Dear Ms. Emma, I think he should have made the book less confusing.  It would have been better if someone, maybe at the end, just told him if the dragons were real or not, instead of first feeling that the dragons were fake, then real, then fake again. I am reading The Underneath, by Kathi Appett.  It is about an evil man named Gar Face and his dog, Ranger, and some cats who befriend Ranger. I don’t get how Gar Face could be so mean.  He never felt any sorrow or regret in his life.  Even rally evil people have those feelings sometimes. I am reading Rules, by Cynthia Lord. What does the OT do?  I don’t’ think it really helps David much.  I feel sorry for Catherine, David embarrasses her a lot.   Sincerely,   Ben *** 5/10/2010 Dear Ben, OT stands for “Occupational Therapist”.  An occupational therapist works with people who have limitations.  Their role is to help others lead a full life by teaching them how to do day-to-day tasks.  Jason’s OT teaches how to communicate and maneuver his wheelchair. She probably also teaches him how to eat, brush his teeth, etc.  She wants him to be as independent as possible.  David’s OT probably teaches him how to look at others when he speaks to them, control his body, deal with loud sounds, have fewer tantrums, etc. David really can’t help the way his brain thinks.  I don’t think Catherine should be embarrassed.  That’s just who he is.  I understand why she is, but I feel for David. Do you think Kristi is a good friend to Catherine? Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的, 爱玛老师 *** 2/16/ Dear Ms. Emma, Yes, her mothr was the editor.  I first thought, as Natalie thought, that it was very easy to get a book published, just write a story, call the company or something, and it can be published.  But actually you first have to find an agent, then an editor in the company, then publish it.  It’s actually way harder than it sounds.  I got The School Story from the class library. I have read Frindle.  I also think it is Andrew Clements’ best book.  I really liked it. I am now reading Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, by Roald Dahl.  It is the sequel to Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.  It’s about Charlie’s family and Mr. Wonka having many adventures in Mr. Wonka’s glass elevator. Dahl is funny, and he is very creative with writing and wording. Right now, I am reading Maximum Ride:  the Angel Experiment, by James Patterson.  It is about a group of lab-mutated teenagers and children trying to save the world. The Flock are really cool, they have wings and can fly.  It would be awesome if I could have wings. I just finished MVP, by Douglass Evans.  It is about 24 teams trying to go around the world in 40 days. Sincerely, Ben ***  2/22/2010 Dear Ben, Roald Dahl will be remembered as one of the greatest children’s book authors in the 20th century.  His children’s books typically involve adult villains or villainesses who hate and mistreat children. Usually there’s at least one “good” adult.  Dahl says he was mistreated by teachers and headmasters and headmistresses at boarding school, so he had to write about it in a humorous way. Tell me more about MVP by Evans.  What are the rules of the contest?  Did you recognize any of the places?Sincerely,Ms. Emma

真诚的, 爱玛老师 *** 12/8/ Dear Ms. Emma, In this book, Johnny wants to believe that the computer game is not real, just a game, not war of anything.  But the Captain of the ScreeWee fleet thinks war is very bad and knows that less people would die if they surrendered,  human, or ScreeWee.  A lesson Johnny learned is that war is very destructible and can harm lots of people.  Also, war is not a game. Right now, I am reading Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen.  It is about a boy named Brian who crash-landed in a Canadian lake and tried to survive in the nearby woods, all alone, with his hatchet. Brian found a kind of berry that he called “gut cherries”, because it made his stomach ache and caused him to have diarrhea.  Even if I were as hungry as he was, I think I would still have at least spit out the pit, instead of swallowing them whole like he did. I still think Brian is pretty smart like when he made the fire.  He knew what kind of fuel to make, and how to blow the fire.  He also made a fishing spear, but that didn’t work.  I think he is going to try to make a better one or maybe find a new way to catch fish. Right now I am reading Brian’s Winter, one of the sequels to Hatchet.  It is about what would happen if Brian hadn’t been rescued at the end of Hatchet. Your student, Ben *** 12/14/2009 Dear Ben, Brian is brave and smart; but he certainly learned from his mistakes.  He also learned that he needed to stop feeling sorry for himself and understand that no one can help him survive.  He needs to do that on his own. What were some of his mistakes, or setbacks?  What were some of his triumphs?  How did he handle returning to the real world?   Sincerely,   Ms. Emma

真诚的, 爱玛老师 *** 3/2/ Dear Ms. Emma, In the first book in the series, Max rescued a girl named Ella from a bunch of big mean bullies with guns.  But she was hurt bad so Ella took Max into her house where Max met Ella’s mom, which she later found out was her own mom too. I don’t know exactly why Max has to save the world, only that she was somehow destined to save the world.  She needs to try to save it from pollution and global warming and stuff like that. I don’t know how they are tracked.  Close enough, but she also needs to save the world. I just finished The Dangerous Days of Daniel X, by James Petterson & Michael Ledwidge.  It is about a boy named Daniel whose parents were murdered by aliens and so he tries to destroy all of the bad aliens. Daniel only has Level 3 strength, but he is smart.  In the end when he killed Ergent Seth, who had Level 7 speed and Level 7 strength, he baited Seth, then turned into a tick, crawled inside Seth’s head, then turned into an elephant. I just finished Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo.  It is about how a dog named Winn-Dixie changes Opal’s life. I think Kate DeCamillo has a fair share of sadness, maybe that’s why she made so much sad stuff in the story  I think she thought the story would be too sad if Winn-Dixie was lost forever so she made Opal and the Preacher find Winn-Dixie.   Sincerely,   Ben *** 3/8/2010 Dear Ben, All great authors draw on the past for inspiration.  I’m sure she knew a kid or two like Opal, as well as a Gloria Dump and someone like the Preacher.  The book was made into a movie.  Have you seen it? Please comment on one of the themes of the book: friendship, hope, new beginnings, companionship. Have you read other books by Kate Dicamillo?  I have others you can read. Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的,   爱玛老师 *** 4/6/2010 Dear Ms. Emma, Matt learns that a native would probably never do some of the things that Robinson Crusoe said he did.  Attean also shows him how to make snares and fish and other things after his lessons. I just finished How to be a Pirate, by Cressida Cowell.  It is about Hiccup trying to find treasure. In the end Hiccup did find the treasure of his great-great-grandfather, Grimbeard the Ghastly. I think Hiccup made a good choice.  He left all the treasure inside the cave where he found it, and kept the treasure a secret. I am reading Icefire, by Chris d’Lacey.  There is a guy named Dr. Bergstrom that is really mysterious.  I think he also knows about the dragons. I am reading The Sign of The Beaver. I think Matt will be grateful to Attean for showing him all those tricks, like how to make a fishing hook, how to make bows and arrows, and how to mark his way in the forest so he doesn’t get lost. I think Matt made the right decision to stay and wait for his father.  If I were him, I would too.   Sincerely,   Ben *** 4/20/2010 Dear Ben, I always questioned Matt’s decision to stay.  He was committed to his family and loved them very much. I felt Matt should have gone with Attean.  He could have left a note for his family in his cabin explaining where he is and why he left.  That way if his dad did make it back, he could search for Matt.  I think Matt was behaving more like an Indian than a colonial boy. Did you see the movie, How to Train a Dragon?  I just ordered one more Cressida Cowell book, but I can’t remember which one! Tell me more about IceFire.   Sincerely,   Ms. Emma

真诚的,   爱玛老师 *** 1/26/ Dear Ms. Emma, The alien was real.  At first Kate  and her friend Linda, thought it was just someone playing a practical joke on them.  But then they changed their mind when they met BB-9. What I’ve learned about the printing business is that it is hard work and takes a lot of time to print one newspaper.  It is a lot easier now if we want to type something.  We can just use computers. I am reading Brisingr, by Christopher Paolini. The Varden are  very strong with Eragon and Saphira and the other magicians.  I think if a person discovered how to make machine guns and bombs and stuff, they could defeat the Empire easily.  Except then it would pollute the air a lot. Eragon learned that he was the son of Morzan, an evil Dragon Rider that helped Calbatorix rise to power, and brother of Murtagh, another Dragon Rider.  I think that even though Murtagh would kill Eragon whenever he had the change, Eragon wouldn’t kill Murtagh, even if his own life depended on it.  He doesn’t like killings.   Sincerely,   Ben *** 2/1/2010 Dear Ben, How long on average did you take to read Eragon and Eldest?  Is Brisingr longer? Eragon can’t be perfect.  Every great character has flaws.  What are his? Eragon is a hero on a journey who is up against a villain.  Parts of it may seem predictable. What really did surprise you?  Would you kill if you had to?   Sincerely,   Ms. Emma

真诚的, 爱玛老师 ***   4/20/2010 Dear Ms. Emma, Yes, I saw it on Thursday.  I liked it, but it was totally different from the book. In Icefire, it tells what the Icefire is, and how it was made.  The Icefire was made from the last real dragon’s Firetear.  The Firetear froze up a whole bunch of water in the north which is now the ice cap.  So the ice from the ice cap is Icefire. I am reading The Fire Eternal, by Chris d’Lacey.  The setting in this book is five years after Fire Star.  I noticed that everybody seems more mature.  Especially David, he seems more wise and knowledgeable. I think The Fire Eternal isn’t as good as Fire Star.  Here’s how I rate the books in the series (best to worst): Fire Star, Icefire, The Fire Eternal, The Fire Within. The series is different than I first thought it would be.  When I read The Fire Within, I thought there wasn’t going to be much action, but actually there’s a lot. I am reading Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat.  The title doesn’t sound good and the cover doesn’t look good but it’s actually very good.  It’s about a rat who is very rude and can shrink people. I think they should make the cover more attractive. It doesn’t look very exciting. Sincerely, Ben *** 4/26/2010 Dear Ben, I like how you rated Chris d’Lacey’s books.  I believe you rated them according to action.  Right?  The more action, the better for you?  That would be true for most people. It’s always a great idea to reflect on a book after you finish it.  Rage it, digest it, remember the most important parts, remember how you were entertained, etc. Here’s what I’ve found …… whenever I’ve finished a fantastic book, the next book I read, no matter what, is never great … even if it is!!!  I feel bad for those books and authors.  Then I wished I had read that book first.  I’d feel better about it. What do you wish Chris D’Lacey had done in The Fire Within to improve on it, in your opinion? Be specific. Sincerely, Ms. Emma

***   11/10/ Dear Ms. Emma, “The Elephant’s Child” describes why every elephant nowadays all have long noses.  In “The Moth and The Star”, the child moth wants to fly to the star, instead of flying to the lamp.  Therefore he didn’t die young. The moral of it is that if you have a large goal in life, you will live better and longer.  I’ve read all the stories now. I just finished Adventures of Sherlock Homes. In all the stories in the book, I think The Naval Treaty was the best. I like it because it is the most mysterious one.  The thief who stole The Naval Treaty was a man who I didn’t even suspect, but Sherlock Holmes was clever enough to discover him. I also just finished Eagle, by Jeff Stone.  It is the 5th book in “The Five Ancestors” series. There are seven books in this series: Tiger, Monkey, Snake, Crane, Eagle, Mouse, and Dragon. This book is about Ying, an eagle kung fu warrior who wants to be a dragon.  (He escaped from the prison in the previous book, Crane. )  He has a treasure map, and together he and Fu, Malao, Hok, Charles (from Holland),  and Shaosha, their spy, go in search of the treasure.  But when they there, they find Tonglong already with the treasure. Ying changed a lot while in the influence of Hok.  He used to always be angry, selfish, arrogant, and spewing threats all over the place.  Now he doesn’t get angry that often anymore, and less arrogant.  I think he and Fu, Maolao, and Hok are an unbeatable team.   Your student,   Ben *** 11/17/2009 Dear Ben, I like how you notice that characters change in books.  Some characters change throughout the book and others change by the end. What was the resolution to your book?  How does the author share his message or theme? Katherine Paterson, the author of The Great Gilly Hopkins, was born in China.  I thought you would find that interesting.  Her parents were Christian missionaries. Do you think there is anyone Gilly likes in the first third of the book? Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的,   爱玛老师 *** 12/1/2009 Dear Ms. Emma, No, Fibby doesn’t remind me of anybody. They are hard to be around.  The dog had to come to school because Mr. Roy, Daisy’s friend, needed to go somewhere and she had to take care of Wheezy, the dog.  The ending was very funny.  They were supposed to give Wheezy zinc pills every half an hour, but Mr. Roy forgot to mention it to Daisy.  When Wheezy was caught inside Daisy’s locker, they all thought they were doomed, because of the NFA (No Furry Animals) rule.  But even though Ulna (Fibby’s mother) was yelling and screaming at assistant principal Snout, he couldn’t do anything, because they actually hadn’t broken the rule C Wheezy’s fur all fell out already, since he hadn’t taken zinc pills for so long. I just finished Now You See It, Now You Don’t: The Amazing World of Optical Illusions, by Seymour Simon. I really like the book, and all the pictures of optical illusions inside it.  Some are so weird that it makes me laugh.  My favorite picture is a girl or an old witch, depending how you look at it. I am reading Atherton: Rivers of Fire, by Patrick Carman.  The book is full of suspense, which makes it very good.  It is about Samuel, Isabel, Edgar, Vincent, and Dr. Kincaid, finding Dr. Harding, the creator of Atherton. Dr. Harding was actually Lord Phineus, who was the cruel ruler of Atherton.  Dr. Harding had locked his mind inside of Lord Phineus, but Dr. Kincaid unlocked Dr. Harding’s mind. I just finished Only You Can Save Mankind, by Terry Pratchett.  It is about a boy named Johnny Maxwell who is playing a computer game called Only You Can Save Mankind.  Inside the game, there are aliens, whom you are supposed to shoot and kill.  But when Johnny reaches the last level, the aliens surrendered to him, and so he had a new task C to try to lead the ScreeWee alien fleet past the Border from game space into real space. I think the Captain is pretty smart.  She saw everything that happened to the aliens who tried to fight the humans, so she decided to surrender.  If she surrendered, some of her fleet might be able to make it, but if she fought, everyone would die.   Sincerely,   Ben *** 12/7/2009 Dear Ben, Looks like you have been reading a lot of great books lately. Only You Can Save Mankind by Terry Pratchett seems like a science fiction book every boy wishes would happen to him: play a computer game, have it become real, and try to save the world. The ScreeWee must love Johnny.  He’s like their savior.  He has come to lead them back to safety. What does your book say about war and fighting?  What is a lesson that Johnny learned? Sincerely, Ms. Emma

真诚的,   爱玛老师 *** 3/16/2010 Dear Ms. Emma, Will realized that the Tripods were taking away freedom and basically enslaving them.  I also think he realized that he could, actually, defeat the Tripods and bring freedom back to humans. I am reading Alfred Kropp: The Seal of Solomon. There is a secret organization called OIPEP, and it uses tons of code names.  Like their enemy Mike Arnold, everybody knows his name but still calls him the “Hyena”. I am reading The City of Gold and Lead, the sequel to The White Mountains.  In The White Mountains, Will, Henry, and Beanpole travel south from England to France and take refuge in the White Mountains.  I wonder if there is actually a real mountain range there. I am reading The Fire Within.  It is the first book in the Last Dragon Chronicles, by Chris d’Lacey.  It is about a bunch of clay dragons coming to life.   Sincerely,   Ben *** 3/22/2010 Dear Ben, There is a mountain in France called Mont Blanc, which means “White Mountain”.  It is 15,782 feet and is the largest mountain in Western Europe.  The first winter Olympics were held in the town of Chamonix (near the mountain) in 1929. Is City of Gold and Lead as good as The White Mountains?  What was life like for the three of them in France? Can you explain how and why the clay dragons come to life in The Fire Within?   Sincerely,   Ms. Emma
