“外研社杯”英语演讲比赛演讲稿
Honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen:
Today my topic is ’Nuclear power: a blessing or a disaster?’
When the first atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, the world was thrust into atomic age. Meanwhile in the commence of cold war and during its long term, it had set the world into fear and panic of nuclear war many times.
But over the years, nuclear power has found its way to promote goodness for humankind .It promises to provide clean and efficient energy for the centuries to come.
So whether nuclear power a blessing or a disaster?
There is no firm answer for this question from my own perspective.
Ladies and gentlemen, my very initial contact with nuclear power was from a TV programme called Green Space where I saw for the first time how nuclear power had changed people’s lives and what it had left for the residents’ living around Chyrnobil nuclear power plant. Unfortunately, It was a sad story.
My heart sank when I saw a boy infant appear on the screen smiling with big blue sparkling eyes. He was so cute and adorable just like all the other kids but he was blinded. What’s more, he had to receive medical treatment everyday to alleviate radiation damage, but still stood little chance of growing up. Later I learned that inappropriate operation and equipment design defect was responsible for the tradegy .Eight years has past, but the picture of that boy’s smile still appears infront of me and reminds me that nuclear power can be a living devil.
However, with the increasing depletion of resources and the instant demand for energy, clean and efficient nuclear power may seem the best choice.
As an old saying goes ’Every sword has two blades.’ Nuclear power is dangerous, yet efficient; environmental devastated yet clean; expensive yet sustainable. It is a matter of how we use and how we treat it. While let’s beyond all this ,whether nuclear power a blessing or a disaster, it’s ours’ choice.
Thank you for listening!

Feeling of youth
No young man believes he shall ever die. it was a saying of my brother's, and a fine one. there is a feeling of eternity in youth, which makes us amend for everything. to be young is to be as one of the immortal gods. one half of time indeed is flown-the other half remains in store for us with all its countletreasures; for there is no line drawn, and we see no limit to our hopes and wishes. we make the coming age our own-
The vast, the unbounded prospect lies before us.
Death. old age. are words without a meaning. that paby us like the idea air which we regard not. others may have undergone, or may still be liable to them-we “bear a charmed life“, which laughs to scorn all such sickly fancies. as in setting out on delightful journey, we strain our eager gaze forward-
Bidding the lovely scenes at distance hail!
And see no end to the landscape, new objects presenting themselves as we advance; so, in the commencement of life, we set no bounds to our inclinations. nor to the unrestricted opportunities of gratifying them. we have as yet found no obstacle, no disposition to flag; and it seems that we can go on so forever. we look round in a new world, full of life, and motion, and ceaseleprogress; and feel in ourselves all the vigor and spirit to keep pace with it, and do not foresee from any present symptoms how we shall be left behind in the natural course of things, decline into old age, and drop into the grave. it is the simplicity, and as it were abstractedneof our feelings in youth, that (so to speak) identifies us with nature, and (our experience being slight and our passions strong) deludes us into a belief of being immortal like it. our short-lives connection with existence we fondly flatter ourselves, is an indissoluble and lasting union-a honeymoon that knows neither coldness, jar, nor separation. as infants smile and sleep, we are rocked in the cradle of our wayward fancies, and lulled into security by the roar of the universe around us0we quaff the cup of life with eager haste without draining it, instead of which it only overflows the more-objects prearound us, filling the mind with their magnitude and with the strong of desires that wait upon them, so that we have no room for the thoughts of death.

Change The Unchangeable—You Will When You Believe
Good evening, ladies and gentleman! It’s my great honor to be here giving this speech to you. Thank you so much. My topic of the speech is change the unchangeable-you will when you believe!
You may often hear this when it comes to keeping a positive attitude towards your daily life, ‘‘change the changeable, and accept the unchangeable.” Of course, this is an easy way to avoid panic when meeting with difficult situations. However, I am going to share with you a totally different opinion about dealing with obstacles and having a successful life. That is, change the unchangeable, and you will when you believe.
In our daily life, there are so many things which we considered as the unchangeable. For example, you think you cannot remember all the English words. You think its impossible to be the number one in your class because many students are doing better than you. And also you do not believe that you can change the world by yourself. But now, I am telling you, all of these are not true. There is a chance that you can change the so-called unchangeable things. It’s not a hard as it looks like. All you need to do is to be confident, believing in yourself that you can do it.
In this world, there are two kinds of animals that can climb to the top of the pyramid. One is the eagle, its wings can help it fly to the top of the pyramid easily. The other is the snail, no one believes the snail can do such unchangeable things. But the snail itself believes. Just like water constantly dripping wears holes in stone. Step by step, the confidence and persistence finally help the snail manage to arrive at the top of the pyramid.
The unchangeable things, just like a wall that prevents us from seeing through the essence of life and exploring the colorful world. But confidence can give us courage to break that wall, and a strong will can finally get us there. When meeting with the unchangeable things next time, face it with confidence. Believing that you can do it under any circumstances. As long as we are confident enough to pursue our future dream with great passion and courage, we will make a difference!
Nothing is difficult to a willing heart. Change the unchangeable-you will when you believe!

Honorable judges and dear fellow students,
Just as most people here, when I first saw the topic reform and opening-up policies,a voice came out, saying what a grand scale! Then those big events, such as China's accession to WTO,the launch of Shenzhou and the submersion of Jiaolong flashed through my mind. However,at this moment I stand on the stage as a member of Chinese youth,I'm not gonna draw a magnificent blueprint for you. What I exactly want is to find out the relation between Chinese youth and this era of reform and opening-up.
It is known to all that in the past 40 years,China has captured the opportunity provided by globalization and grown rapidly from nobody to the second-largest economy in the world. In this context,it could be said that we young people have had better resources than ever before. To be more specific, let's pick up some daily life's fragments: for example, one Sunday morning, you don't feel like going outside,so you pull out your smartphone and quickly order a takeout on APP to comfort your empty stomach. In another case ,there's been a discount on Taobao .After struggling with your equipment and the net speed, you finally got your favorite goods at the best prize, because the most complete supply chain and logistic chain worldwide will solve the remaining work for you,so all you have to do is waiting. Not to mention the increasing number of people going abroad, with a Chinese passport, they are entitled to travel around the world and come back home safely.
But now I wonder how many of you have realized that this convenience, this sense of security does't come out of air, surely we could regard it as the product of reform and opening-up policies, nevertheless,do you really understand what are behind those achievements? There is a saying, if you live at ease , that is because there are a great many people who are working for you in silence. They might be the politicians and entrepreneurs who climb into the raging flow to explore and promote the system construction of market economy, they might be the intellectuals who devote their lives to prompting the engine of development, and they might be every single person we have access to.
In other words,we youth do not take it for granted, the more resources we possess means the more responsibility we will shoulder. When the 95s were claimed to be the new youth in China and the first millennial stepped into campus, baton of the era has also been approaching.Although China is moving firmly towards its goal of rejuvenation ,deficiencies and problems still exist. So in this sense,we youth ought to grow stronger to sustain the potentiality of development. With the baton in hands,do not afraid to embrace the mercurial society ,do not afraid to change the future. So that as the new youth we could feel more emboldened to say that facing the reform and opening-up policies we are not only the gainers but also the successors!Thank you!

Reform and Opening-up : Dare to embrace the world
Good afternoon everyone, my name is Jack. It’s my great privilege to stand here and share my own perspective about 40 years’ reform and opening-up.
Through the long history of China, reform is easy to witness. Some reforms just shifted the rulers’ name yet had little influence on the society. Others, however, can be revolutionary and our reform and opening-up policy is one of them.
Born in 21st century, it is hard to have the exact feeling about the life before 1978.Luckily, I can grasp some information from my parents and my grandparents.
On a personal note, the most impressive change that has occurred during the 40 years is people’s concept of living, or to be specific, the concept of allocating their salary. For instance, Elder people like my grandparents always cut off their monthly budget and then save the surplus money into the bank account. While young adults are more likely to use the remaining salary to do some investment or with the loan if necessary. I did ask my grandparents why not follow suit, they told me it had risks that they didn’t want to take. Apparently, we stand in this period and all know that such kind of trade and investment is helpful to the economy ascent. Thanks to Mr. Deng’s policy, we can now dare to trade both domestically and internationally.
Beside economy, swift development in other aspects is also prodigious. As you can see, Skyscrapers stand in the city and huts are no more. Cars take the main avenue and bikes step aside. Various travel modes are available for common civilians. Imagine, what kind of condition we may live in if the reform and opening-up policy is absent? Do you want to live in the condition that was similar to forty years ago. Ok, back to the point, when mentioning transportation, you all know what I am going to talk about is our high speed-rail whose both speed and technology top all over the world. Dating back to 40 years ago, it is nearly impossible for people to imagine such changes can literally take place. Due to the reform and opening-up, I can now jump out of the well and embrace the world. Flash as 40 years may be, we indeed witness and experience the happiness that the reform and opening-up has brought us.
Therefore, as a freshman, it is my duty and also our duty to be explicit about our directions and master adequate professional knowledge which will be the basis of our contributions to the community and creating harmonious environment for the next generation. Do not be afraid that your contribution may not be considered as innovative as Deng Xiao Pin did, because it is the little parts that you have done that build up the world we live in today.
In the end, I have to say that reform and opening-up is a great fortune for every Chinese. Owing to the window it opens for us, I can now embrace the world.
That’s all. Thank you.

building bridges for the future
i’m studying in a city that’s famous for its walls. people who visit my city are amazed at the imposing sight of its walls, especially when silhouetted against the setting sun with gold, shining streaks. the old, cracked bricks are covered with lichens and the walls are weather-beaten guards standing still for centuries.
our ancestors liked to build walls. they built walls in beijing, xi’an, nanjing and many other cities, and they built the great wall, which snakes across half our country. they built walls to protect against enemies and evil spirits. this tradition has survived to this day: we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public.
for a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world to me.
my perceptions, however, changed after i made a hiking trip to the eastern suburbs of my city. my classmates and i were walking with some foreign students. as we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by tall trees, which formed a wide canopy above our heads. suddenly one foreign student asked me, “where is the entrance to the eastern suburbs?”
“we’re already in the eastern suburbs,” i replied. he seemed taken aback, “i thought you chinese had walls for everything.” his remark set off a heated debate. at one point, he likened our walled cities to “jails”, while i insisted that the eastern suburbs were one of the many places in china that had no walls.
that debate had no winners, but i did learn a lot from this student. for instance, he told me that some major universities like oxford and cambridge were not surrounded by walls. i have to admit that we do have many walls in china, and as we develop our country, we must look carefully at them and decide whether they are physical or intangible. we will keep some walls but tear down those that impede our development.
let me give another example.
a year ago, when i was working on a term paper, i needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library. however, the librarian coldly rejected my request to borrow it, saying, “you can’t borrow this book, you’re not a student here.” in the end, i had to spend 200 yuan to buy a copy. meanwhile, the copy in the law school gathered dust on the shelf.
at the beginning of this semester, i heard that my university had started to think of unifying its libraries and linking them to libraries at other universities, so my experience wouldn’t be repeated. barriers would be replaced by bridges. an inter-library loan system would give us access to books from any library. with globalization and china integrated into the world, i believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down.
i know that globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad. but one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to china’s tangible and intangible walls and forces us to exa
mine their role in the modern world.
and how about the ancient walls of mine and other cities? should we tear them down? definitely not. my city, like beijing and other cities, is actually making a great effort to preserve the walls. these walls attract historians, archaeologists, and many schoolchildren who are trying to study our history and cultural heritage. walls have become bridges to our past and to the rest of the world. if the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great changes in the role of their walls. they are now bridges that link east and west, south and north, and all countries of the world. our cultural heritage will survive globalization.
To me March 28th was a lucky day. It was on that particular evening that I found myself at central stage, in the spotlight. Winning the ”21st Century・Ericsson Cup” Seventh National English Speaking Competition is a memory that I shall treasure and one that will surely stay.
More important than winning the Cup is the friendship that has been established and developed among the contestants, and the chance to communicate offstage in addition to competing onstage. Also the competition helps boost public speaking in China, a skill hitherto undervalued.
For me, though, the competition is a more personal experience. Habitually shy, I had been reluctant to take part in any such activities. Encouraged by my friends, however, I made a last-minute decision to give it a try. In the course of preparation I somehow rediscovered myself, a truer me.
I found that, after all, I like communicating with other people; that exchanging views can be so much fun―and so much rewarding, both emotionally and intellectually; that public speaking is most effective when you are least guarded; and that it is essential to success in every walk of life.
At a more practical level, I realized knowing what you are going to say and how you are going to say it are equally important. To take the original ideas out of your head and transplant them, so to speak, to that of others, you need to have an organized mind. This ability improves with training.
Yet there should not be any loss or addition or distortion in the process. Those ideas that finally find their way into another head need to be recognizably yours. Language is a means to transmit information, not a means to obstruct communication. It should be lucid to be penetrating.
In China, certain public speaking skills have been unduly emphasized. Will it really help, we are compelled to ask, to bang at the podium or yell at the top of your lungs, if you have come with a poorly organized speech, a muddled mind, and unwillingness to truly share your views?
Above all, the single most important thing I learnt was that as a public speaker, you need to pay attention, first and foremost, to the content of your speech. And second, the structure of your speech: how one idea relates and progresses to another.
Only after these come delivery and non-verbal communication: speed control, platform manner, and so on. Pronunciation is important, yet of greater importance is this: Is your language competent enough to express your ideas exactly the way you intend them to be understood?
I was informed afterwards that I was chosen to be the winner for my ”appropriately worded speech, excellent presence and quick-witted response”. In so remarking, the judges clearly showed their preference: they come to listen for meaningful ideas, not for loose judgments, nor easy laughters.
Some contestants failed to address their questions head on. Some were able to, but did not know where to stop―the dragging on betrayed their lack of confidence. The root cause was that they did not listen attentively to the questions. Or they were thinking of what they had prepared.
As I said in my speech, ”It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking ... to take them [issues like globalization] on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way”. We need to respond honestly.
A competition like this draws talented students from all over the country. And of course, I learnt more things than just about public speaking. Since in the final analysis, public speaking is all about effective communication. And this goes true for all communications, whatever their setting.
And the following is the final version of my speech:
GLOBALIZATION: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR CHINA'S YOUNGER GENERATION
Thirty years ago, American President Richard Nixon made an epoch-making visit to China, a country still isolated at that time. Premier Zhou Enlai said to him, ”Your handshake came over the vastest ocean in the world―twenty-five years of no communication”. Thirty years since, China and America have exchanged many handshakes. The fundamental implication of this example is that the need to communicate across differences in culture and ideology is not only felt by the two countries but by many other nations as well.
As we can see today, environmentalists from different countries are making joint efforts to address the issue of global warming, economists are seeking solutions to financial crises that rage in a particular region but nonetheless cripple the world economy, and politicians and diplomats are getting together to discuss the issue of combating terrorism. Peace and prosperity has become a common goal that we are striving for all over the world. Underlying this mighty trend of global communication is the echo of E. M. Forster's words ”Only connect!”
With the IT revolution, traditional boundaries of human society fall away. Our culture, politics, society and commerce are being sloshed into one large melting pot of humanity. In this interlinked world, there are no outsiders, for a disturbance in one place is likely to impact other parts of the globe. We have begun to realize that a world divided cannot endure.
China is now actively integrating into the world. Our recent entry to the WTO is a good example. For decades, we have taken pride in being self-reliant, but now we realize the importance of participating in and contributing to a broader economic order. From a precarious role in the world arena to our present WTO membership, we have come a long way.
But what does the way ahead look like? In some parts of the world people are demonstrating against globalization. Are they justified, then, in criticizing the globalizing world? Instead of narrowing the gap between the rich and the poor, they say, globalization enables the developed nations to swallow the developing nations' wealth in debts and interest. Globalization, they argue, should be about a common interest in every other nation's economic health.
We are reminded by Karl Marx that capital goes beyond national borders and eludes control from any other entity. This has become a reality. Multinational corporations are seeking the lowest cost, the largest market, and the most favourable policy. They are often powerful lobbyists in government decision-making, ruthless expansionists in the global market and a devastating presence to local businesses.
For China, still more challenges exist. How are we going to ensure a smooth transition from the planned economy to a market-based one? How to construct a legal system that is sound enough and broad enough to respond to the needs of a dynamic society? How to maintain our cultural identity in an increasingly homogeneous world? And how to define greatness in our rise as a peace-loving nation? Globalization entails questions that concern us all.
Like many young people my age in China, I want to see my country get prosperous and enjoy respect in the international community. But it seems to me that mere patriotism is not just enough. It is vitally important that we young people do more serious thinking and broaden our mind to bigger issues. There might never be easy answers to those issues such as globalization, but to take them on and give them honest thinking is the first step to be prepared for both opportunities and challenges coming our way. This is also one of the thoughts that came to me while preparing this speech.

Hello, everybody !it is my great honor to be here to share my idea with you .Today,I will talk something about DREAM——A word that has changed the world .
“What do you think is the word that has really changed our world ”
When I was asked about this question for the first time ,without thinking it too much ,a word flash into my mind ——DREAM ,D-R-E-A-M.People more or less dream about different things ,to be a teacher ,a doctor ,a scientist ,a businessman and so on .All these people who have dreams should be respected ,because Dreams make the world go around .We grow great by our dreams. All big men are great dreamers in their youth.Everyone has a dream ,and everything starts as one’s daydream.
Martin Luther king had a dream. He desired for a future where blacks and whites would coexist harmoniously as equals.By speaking the way he did,he educated,he inspired,he informed not just the people there, but people throughout America and unborn generations. He pushed forward the pace of American black society towards the racial equality .
Thomas Edison had a dream. He dreamed of a lamp that could be operated by electricity, began where he stood to put his dream into action, and despite more than ten thousand failures,he stood by that dream until he made it a physical reality! And today, his dream lights up the world at night.
Walt Disney had a dream. This,in itself, wasn't unusual -- he was always dreaming. He dreamed of making the first animated feature film, and of building an amusement park that parents could enjoy right along with their kids.Walt Disney empowered his dream and today,Disneyland,Disney world and Disney theme parks attract around the world thrill millions of visitors each and every year.
John F.kennedy had a dream. He wanted to land a man on the moon and return him safely to earth so as to restore faith in the American way of life.John F.kennedy empowered his dream and 8 years later Neil Armstrong stepped on the face of the moon. The moon landing certainly gave Americans new found confidence.
Dream --- A word that has changed the world Yes ,I would say so ,wouldn’t you
Youth is a special life relay station ,the growth with the worry ,the life feeling become aware happily with the dream ,collected a unique youth melody in here .
We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose,so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about. And most importantly ,You are the one you choose to be.
It is easy to waste our lives ,our days ,our minutes .It is easy to exist than living .So hold fast to your dreams,For if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird,That cannot fly.Hold fast to your dreams,For when dreams go,life is a barren field,Frozen with snow.
I hope you everyone he
NO IMAGINATION, NO CREATIVITY
Dear teachers and students:
Good morning / afternoon / evening! My name is Liu zi yuan. The title of my speech is the relationship between creativity and imagination.
There is no creativity without imagination. With the development of the society, creativity becomes more and more important. People could not satisfy with ordinary life. So we need creativity to meet their requirements. We can see significance of the creativity from an example. The smart phone—iphone spread all over the world. That was the creativity of The Apple Inc. It is obvious that it will produce a bigger profit than common manufacturing. But, hao can we acquire creativity?
I think the creativity roots in imagination. Albert Einstein said that imagination is important than knowledge. Because we should creative a thing that is never appeared, we need to image. Use all the things and information around us to think and then go to achieve it. Without the imagination of the Wright brothers , human could not complete the flying dreams. Without the imagination of the Alexander Graham Bell, we could not hear the voice from a distance. If the creativity can make the human progress, imagination will be the road to success. Where the imagination come from? Knowledge ? Experience ? practice? I consider that all of them are indispensable. It is often said that knowledge is power. So we should empower ourselves with knowledge. After that we need to obtain experience form. practice. These are the basis, and we must strengthen them to extend our imagination.
As contemporary college students, we must shoulder the responsibility of the future of our motherland. What we need is not only the knowledge of the past, but also is the innovation of a new field. Our thought can not be bound by the old things. We should understand that an excellent nation is always full of creativity. So we must promote our imagination. There is no creativity without imagination. That’s all, thank you!
We are in a constant state of trying to get something better and different. We are often trying to be someone different, even when the current us is pretty decent. If you are not happy being you, then who else can you be? In each person's life, will meet a lot of individual who will impacted themselves. Some people teach you a lot of things. Some may give you a lot of encouragement As for me there are also some people inspired me.But the most great impact was my dear father.
When I was a little girl,I often want to give up study instead play games. Then my father will told me ”Perseverance is the golden key to being successful in anything you do.It's a matter of hanging on long afte others have quit“.When I was a teenager I like to make track for a star, and like images like, including dress etc. Then my Dad always tell me that”Be what you are, not what you aren't,because when you are what you aren't,then you aren't what you are“.All of the things are inspired me so much.
Sometimes,I think my father was a philosopher, sometimes think he is a activists, always set an example for his child ,do what a father should do.He is always working hard to feed large family, he is always considerate to forgive his naughty children, moreover he filial piety to the old person,to repay parents' brought up. In a word, he always so good.
Of course he's not a iron man,he also has a fragile, but he never lose self, and perseverance. What's more, when I meet with some troubles and want to give up, he always encourage me.I still remember what he told me ”perseverance overcomes almost everything. When you fall, perseverance tells you get up.When you are defeated, perseverance tells you to try again .When you feel like quitting, perseverance doesn't let you“.
Nowadays, I am an adults, and as a college student,I always unavoidably depending on my father, I often call to my father to ask some questions, meanwhile I also want to know how are they recently I start my college life followed with my fathers edification.Because of my dear father,I know how important to be myself.I have to be true to myself, because the only important thing in life is what you do with the time on spend here in earth. So I'll always be optimistic and happy in the following time. Also,as my father told me,just be perseverance to do everything. So that I can do anything I wish to create my future!
Father is like a lighthouse, guide me in the direction of the future.I hope I could owning a wonderful future, and my father will company with me forever!thanks!篇二Dear friends:
If you can dream it, you can do it.——Walt Disney
It was a long four years. Even after I had actually graduated, the nightmares began to haunt me, the university would call to say I hadn’t truly graduated. There had been a mistake and there was just one more class I needed to take. I was always so relieved to wake up and realize that it had only been a bad dream. In reality, I had completed every course needed for my degree, and I was a full-fledged college graduate!
Now, the rest of my life loomed ahead of me. Sometimes a bachelor’s degree prepares you for a specific occupation——you train to be an accountant, you graduate and get a position in an accounting firm. Often, however, your stint in college only prepares you to make further decisions regarding your future. You’re pretty sure what you don’t want to do!
During my senior year of college, I had toyed with the idea of changing my major. At that point, I had finally discovered what captured my heart. But, wanting to finally be finishing school was a stronger pull. So, I took a few courses in physiology and exercise science, but not enough to receive a degree in physical therapy. That would require advanced schooling, beyond my bachelor’s degree——and I just wasn’tready to tackle that. Having completed my B.C. degree, I didn’t have any intentions of furthering my education.
So, I did the safe thing and got an office job——the very thing I was sure that I didn’t want to do! I detested the office policies, the suits I had to wear and the downtown environment that I had to drive to every day. I knew this was not where I belonged.
But god knew what path my career was to follow. A position opened up at the most exclusive health club in our city, so I applied. This was my kind of environment——an active, vibrant kind of place——completely at the opposite end of the spectrum from the office environment where I found myself. The position required that I work Saturday nights and Sunday mornings. Perfect, I thought! I could keep my office job Monday through Friday and work at my dream job on the weekends. This arrangement lasted several months until, eventually, a full-time position opened up and I was able to resign from my office job.
Over the next few years, I worked my way up the leader, gaining experience in several different departments. I found my niche as the director of member services——catering to our clientele and providing them with numerous cutting-edge programs. I would have stayed at that job forever——it seemed to be the pinnacle of all my dreams fulfilled. Here were fellow employees who had a passion for the same things that I did——health and fitness. Yet again, god had other plans for my life.Within two years, a newer, bigger, better and more state-of-the-art health club facility was built——just five miles down the road. And, in turn, the owner lost many members to that club. And, in turn, the owner lost thousands of dollars. One by one we were each laid off.
After trying unsuccessfully to land another similar position elsewhere, I knew what I had to do. Go back to school!thanks!篇三The story with English and me
Hello everyone,it is glad to meet you,my name is Nong Yanxing, you can also call me Virita, It’s my English name. I am a Howell School’s girl and I am an outgoing girl too, so I like playing jokes with others.
I am fourteen years old and I have learnt English for six years now I’ve loved English since the first time, I’ve heard it from a tape. The voice from the tape was very wonderful and the language was so nice .That time I thought, how wonderful the language is! And if I can speak English as well as the speaker in the tape, that will be amazing! So I asked my mum:“Can I learn English? I really love it!” “Of course you can,but are you sure about it? Can you insist on it?” She was a bit excited. “Of course I can, mum. I love it very much,I want to learn it. ”I said confidently,“Oh,my good kid,you are very good,I am so excited about you are interested in English. ”She gave me a sweet hug. We laughed together. Then,I’ve started my English learning way.
At the beginning,I loved English because it sounds comfortable ,but I can’t believe that how difficult to learn English grammar. Then I felt tired, and I really want to give it up. Buton that main time,my English teacher found me was a bit strange,“What wrong with you,Virita? You look a bit strange.” “Nothing, I just think English grammar is so difficult. It is boring,I don’t want to learn it anymore!” “Why?You can’t give it up,Virita. I can help you just trust me.”“Really?” “Of course!” Then she helped me with my English grammar after class everyday. She told me how to find a good way for my own to learn English grammar. How to find a good way to remember the English new words. She told me try to love English! Interests is the best teacher! So my English marks improve very fast. And in the finally exam,I got the best marks at school. I was so happy .But my English teacher warned me again “Don’t be proud of it. Hasty climbers have the sudden falls. You should come on!”
I also like watching Holly Wood movies, for example, The Green Man in the Avengers is very strong and V in V of vendetta is very cool. Most of actors and actresses speak English in the film, and I really want to understand the whole meaning about a film without any caption one day. Itis difficult for me to make it come true. I should work harder.
English is a very beautiful language .And itis my friend,a real friend. Although I can’t feel it with my hands, but I can feel it with my heart. English brought me a lot and I have a big dream about English. To make it come true ,I should work harder and learn more Western culture. We’ll love each other more and more.
This is the story with English and me.
Thanks for listening.
Long long ago, in a land far away, there lived a beautiful young girl.
She was very sad. Because her mother had died and her father had married again. His new wife had two ugly daughters, Esmerelda and Griselda
Soon after, her father also died and life immediately(立即) changed for the girl.
”You will be our servant(仆人), “said her stepmother(继母). ”You will do everything we say.“
”You must sleep in the kitchens.“ said the stepsisters.
There she had to do hard work from morning until evening, get up before daybreak(黎明), carry water, make the fires, cook, and wash. Besides(除了) this, the sisters did everything imaginable(可以想象) to hurt her. They made fun of her. In the evening when she had worked herself weary(厌倦), there was no bed for her. Instead she had to sleep by the hearth in the ashes(灰). And because she always looked dusty(尘土飞扬) and dirty, they called her Cinderella.
”There are cinders(煤渣) all over your clothes!“ exclaimed(喊叫) the stepmother. ” Cinderella. Thats your new name. Clear these things away, Cinderella.“
”Cinderella! Cinderella!“ Esmerelda and Griselda said. ”Oh, how clever you are, Mama!“
One day, an invitation(邀请) arrived from the palace.
”Girls, listen to this,“ said the stepmother. Cinderella was serving(准备) the breakfast. She listened as her stepmother read the invitation.
”The King is having a ball,“ she said excitedly(兴奋). ”He is looking for a wife for the Prince! Oh, my dears, this is wonderful. He will probably choose one of you, but it will be such a hard choice to make.
“Am I invited too, stepmother?” asked Cinderella.
“You! Certainly(当然) not!” exclaimed(惊呼) her stepmother. “The thought of such a thing. A scruffy servant(破旧的仆人) going to a ball, when only beautiful ladies are invited!”
“Hah! Hah!” laughed the stepsisters. “Beautiful! That doesnt include you, Cinderella!”
“You may help my two lovely girls to get ready,” said her stepmother.
“Oh,” said Cinderella
“We shall all have new dresses, girls, and we shall go shopping today. Clear away these things, Cinderella.”
Oh, I wish I could go to the ball, thought(认为) Cinderella.
The day of the ball arrived and the whole day was spent preparing Esmerelda and Griselda. Cinderella did her best to make the sisters look pretty, but it was an impossible task.
Finally, the coach arrived to collect the girls and their mother.
Cinderella was very tired and she wandered back to the kitchens.
“Oh, I did so want to go,” she sighed(叹气) as she sat down by the fire.
“Whats to stop you?” asked a voice(声音).
“Whos that?” asked Cinderella, looking around.
“Im here by the door.” A strange woman walked up to Cinderella. “I heard you the other day, wishing you could go to the ball. Well, the ball is this evening, and youre going.”
“But how?” asked Cinderella. “What can you do?”
“Anything I want to,” said the woman. “Im your fairy(仙女) godmother, and Im here to send you to the ball.
She sat down.
”Come now,“ she said. ”Dry those tears(擦干眼泪). We have work to do. I need a large pumpkin(南瓜), two mice(老鼠) and a frog. Can you find these?“
”Yes,“ said Cinderella, mystified(迷惑) by the request(请求).
”Off you go, then.“
When Cinderella found all the things, her fairy godmother took them all outside.
”Now for the magic,“ she said. She waved(挥舞) her hands and the air began to twinkle(闪烁) and sparkle(闪光). The pumpkin began to grow and change, until standing there was a coach.
The mice changed into two fine footmen(步兵), the frog into the driver, and the rats(老鼠) into two beautiful horses to pull the coach.
Cinderella clapped(拍) her hands. ”Its beautiful!“ she cried.
”In you get,“ said her fairy godmother.
”But I cant go like this,“ said Cinderella.
”Like what?“ asked the fairy godmother. ”You look lovely to me.“
Cinderella looked at herself. While the magic had been working on the pumpkin, it had also been working on her. Instead of her ragged(破烂) dress she wore a beautiful ball gown(晚礼服), with glass slippers(玻璃鞋) on her feet.
”Oh, fairy godmother,“ said Cinderella. ”Its lovely. How can I thank you?“
”By going to the ball,“ said the fairy godmother. ”Off you go, but remember, the magic stops working at midnight(午夜). Everything will change back then. Now go and enjoy yourself.“
”Good-bye, fairy godmother,“ called Cinderella, as the coach swept off.
Cinderella arrived at the palace(皇宫) and walked into the ballroom. Everyone stopped and stared(看着).
”Who is she?“ people asked, including her stepmother and stepsisters.
The Prince saw her, and had eyes for no one else for the rest of the evening. Cinderella danced only with the Prince(王子), and as the evening passed, he fell in love with her.
A clock chiming(报时) reminded Cinderella of her fairy godmothers warning(警告). It must be eleven oclock, she thought(告知), but she asked the Prince. ”What time is it?“
”Almost midnight,“ he answered.
”Oh, no!“ cried Cinderella. ”I must go!“
”You cant. Not now,“ said the Prince.
”I must.“ And Cinderella swept out of the room, and ran out of the palace. As she ran, the clock finished chiming. Cinderellas clothes changed back into rags(破布), and the coach and horses were nowhere to be seen.
The Prince tried to follow, but he couldnt catch up. When he reached(走到) the door, all he found was one glass slipper. He ran to the main door.
”Was a beautiful girl just driven(赶) out of here?“ he asked the guard(士兵).
”No, your Highness. Ive only seen a scruffy servant(邋遢的仆人) girl,“ the guard answered.
”Ive lost her,“ said the Prince, and he returned sadly to the palace.
The next morning, Cinderellas stepmother and stepsisters were talking about the ball.
The Prince meanwhile(同时) decided to look for the mysterious(神秘) girl he had fallen in love with. He issued(发表) a proclamation(公告). ”Whoever the glass shoe fits(合适), shall be wife to the Prince.“
The Prince and his footman(仆人) went from house to house of all the ladies invited to the ball.
He finally arrived at the stepmothers house.
”Its my shoe!“ cried Esmerelda, trying desperately(穿) to pull the shoe on.
”Please, miss!“ said the footman. ”Your foot is too big. you will break the slipper(玻璃鞋).“
Griselda tried the shoe, but her toes were far too long.
”Is there anyone else?“ asked the Prince.
”Theres only Cinderella, the maid(女仆),“ said the stepmother. ”But she wasnt even at the ball.“
”All the ladies in the kingdom(王国) must try the slipper,“ said the footman.
Cinderella was called from the kitchen. Esmerelda and Griselda laughed when they saw how dirty she was. But their laughter turned to tears when they saw Cinderellas foot slide easily into the slipper.
”Oh!“ they cried. ”It fits!“
The Prince looked at Cinderella and realised that she was the girl that he had fallen in love with.
Cinderella took the other slipper from her pocket(口袋) and put it on.
The Prince was happy to have found her, and on a bright sunny day, he and Cinderella were married. They lived happily ever after.

A Small Truth to Make Life 100%
Karamay Experimental Middle School Luo Jintao
Good afternoon, my dear friends and the honorable judges.
I’m very glad to be here and give you my speech. I hope we all can enjoy the time. Now, today my topic is: A Small Truth to Make Life 100%.
As a young English teacher, I have to face different kinds of students and deal with trivial things every day. Life goes on, but sometimes it’s becoming frustrating and I feel very tired. How to make my life become better? I’m always seeking for the answer. Fortunately, when I read a magazine one day, I found the truth to make my life 100%. Today I would like to share it with you.
Now, my dear friends, let’s do an interesting test together and then you will find the secret by yourself! As we all know, there are 26 alphabets in English, A to Z. Against them we have the numbers 1% to 26%. If A is equal to 1%, and B to 2%, and so on, until Z is equal to 26%, then can you guess what can make our life 100%? That is to say, what can make our life perfect?
Some of you may suggest Money. However, after calculating, you’ll find it only comes to 72%. Now try a few more. Knowledge? Yes, knowledge is power! But this time it only comes to 96%. How about love? That only shows at 54%. Luck does even worse, only at 47%. Though most of us think this is the most important.
Building Bridges for the Future
I’m studying in a city that’s famous for its walls。 People who visit my city are amazed at the imposing sight of its walls, especially when silhouetted against the setting sun with gold, shining streaks。 The old, cracked bricks are covered with lichens and the walls are weather-beaten guards standing still for centuries。
Our ancestors liked to build walls。 They built walls in Beijing, Xi’an, Nanjing and many other cities, and they built the Great Wall, which snakes across half our country。 They built walls to protect against enemies and evil spirits。 This tradition has survived to this day: we still have many parks and schools walled off from the public。
For a long time, walls were one of the most natural things in the world to me。
My perceptions, however, changed after I made a hiking trip to the eastern suburbs of my city。 My classmates and I were walking with some foreign students。 As we walked out of the city, we found ourselves flanked by tall trees, which formed a wide canopy above our heads。 Suddenly one foreign student asked me, “Where is the entrance to the eastern suburbs?”
“We’re already in the eastern suburbs,” I replied。 He seemed taken aback, “I thought you Chinese had walls for everything。” His remark set off a heated debate。 At one point, he likened our walled cities to “jails”, while I insisted that the eastern suburbs were one of the many places in China that had no walls。
That debate had no winners, but I did learn a lot from this student。 For instance, he told me that some major universities like Oxford and Cambridge were not surrounded by walls。 I have to admit that we do have many walls in China, and as we develop our country, we must look carefully at them and decide whether they are physical or intangible。 We will keep some walls but tear down those that impede our development。
Let me give another example。
A year ago, when I was working on a term paper, I needed a book on business law and found a copy in the law school library。 However, the librarian coldly rejected my request to borrow it, saying, “You can’t borrow this book, you’re not a student here。” In the end, I had to spend 200 yuan to buy a copy。 Meanwhile, the copy in the law school gathered dust on the shelf。
At the beginning of this semester, I heard that my university had started to think of unifying its libraries and linking them to libraries at other universities, so my experience wouldn’t be repeated。 Barriers would be replaced by bridges。 An inter-library loan system would give us access to books from any library。 With globalization and China integrated into the world, I believe many of these intangible walls will be knocked down。
I know that globalization is a controversial issue, and it is hard to say whether it is good or bad。 But one thing is for sure: it draws our attention to China’s tangible and intangible walls and forces us to examine their role in the modern world。
And how about the ancient walls of mine and other cities? Should we tear them down? Definitely not。 My city, like Beijing and other cities, is actually XXX a great effort to preserve the walls。 These walls attract historians, archaeologists, and many schoolchildren who are trying to study our history and cultural heritage。 Walls have become bridges to our past and to the rest of the world。 If the ancient builders of these walls were still alive today, they would be proud to see such great changes in the role of their walls。 They are now bridges that link East and West, South and North, and all countries of the world。 Our cultural heritage will survive globalization。
what is real beauty?
yang lingyuan
it is human nature that all of us should be fond of beauty. everybody was born with a heart for beauty.
today in china, with the rising of our living standard, people's requirement of beauty has been heightened accordingly. some people spare no money or energy on beautiful clothes, fashionable hair styles, the decoration of their houses and even the improvement of their looks. but it seems to me,all
these are more or less confined to the beauty in appearance,or rather, the outward beauty.
in my opinion,we shouldn't only pay attention to beautiful appearance and neglect the beautification of the mind and what we are after should be the perfect unity of the outward beauty and the inner beauty. as we all know,so far as objects and animals are concerned, there is only beautiful appearance to be mentioned, but to us humanbeings, although the outward beauty really matters, the inner beauty is much more important. this was confirmed by a famous russian writer in words much like this: ”a person is
not lovely for being beautiful but beautiful for being lovely. “
here, i'd like to quote two typical instances and i'm sure, my dear friends, from them you'll find out what real beauty is.
recently i learned from the radio an unpleasant incident about a well known singer. she is very charming with a sweet beautiful voice and very famous for singing the song.”devotion of love“. not long ago,she was invited to zhejiang province to give performance. the moment she was to appear on the stage, she suddenly asked for more reward. worse still, after her request was satisfied, she didn't begin to sing at once. instead, she took her time to count all the money piece by piece. thus she kept the audience waiting for half an hour. so when she at last showed up and started to sing ”devotion of love“,a man rose up from his seat and shouted at her,”you don't have any devotion of love. you are not qualified to sing this song ! "hearing this, the singer stopped singing and began to shout abuses with her finger pointed at the man. at this time the whole audience burst into an uproar.
how disappointed her keen listeners were when they learned this! it is the singer herself who spoiled her beautiful image in the eyes of others.
now, i'm coming to another true story. it's about a poor, ordinary looking old woman. she was a widow without any children, living barely from hand to mouth by picking odds and ends from rubbish heaps. however, she took in more than ten homeless orphans successively and managed to bring them up. every day she labored from morning till night. in order to earn as much money as possible to raise the children and to keep them in school, she even went to a hospital regularly to sell her blood. she got so weak for the loss of blood that she sometimes fell in a faint on her way home.
