《雨巷》1927年夏天，写成后差不多一年，作者将它投寄到《小说月报》。当时代理《小说月报》编辑的叶圣陶一看到这首诗就非常喜欢，称它“替新诗的音节开了一个新的纪元”，并送给作者“雨巷诗人”的称号。这一年，作者才22岁。

这首诗写得既实又虚，朦胧恍惚。“我”似乎有着满腹的心事，无限的烦忧，但又不愿明说，或者是说不出来。“我”似乎在期待什么、追求什么，而期待和追求的目标又显得那样遥远而渺茫。“她”出现了，这或许是在幻觉中，或者是真的，但“她”的出现是那样地快，逝去也那样地快，一刹那间擦肩而过，消失在前方，“像梦一般的凄婉迷茫”。“我”只有自怨自艾，自悲自叹。诗中的“姑娘”，我们可以认为是实指，是诗人心中期待已久的美丽、高洁而忧郁的姑娘。但我们也可以把这位“姑娘”当做诗人心中朦胧的理想和追求，代表了诗人陷入人生苦闷时，对未来渺茫的憧憬。
诗人在《雨巷》中创造了一个丁香一样的结着愁怨的姑娘。这虽然是受古代诗词中一些作品的启发。用丁香结，即丁香的花蕾，来象征人们的愁心，是中国古代诗词中一个传统的表现方法。如李商隐的《代赠》诗中就有过“芭蕉不展丁香结，同向春风各自愁”的诗句。南唐李璟更是把丁香结和雨中愁怅联在一起了。他有一首《浣溪沙》
手卷真珠上玉钩，依前春恨锁重楼。风里落花谁是主?思悠悠!
青鸟不传云外信，丁香空结雨中愁。回首绿波三楚暮，接天流。
这首诗里就是用雨中丁香结做为人们愁心象征的，很显然，戴望舒从这些诗词中吸取了描写愁情的意境和方法，用来构成《雨巷》的意境和形象。这种吸收和借鉴是很明显的，但是能不能说《雨巷》的意境和形象就是旧诗名居“丁香空结雨中愁”的现代白话版的扩充和稀释呢?我认为不能这样看。在构成《雨巷》的意境和形象时，诗人既吸取了前人的经验，又有了自己的创造。第一，古人在诗里以丁香结本身象征愁心，《雨巷》则想象了一个如丁香一样结着愁怨的姑娘。她有丁香瞬忽即失的形象，与古典诗词中套用词旧典不同，也与诗人早期写的其他充满旧诗词调子的作品迥异，表现了更多的新时代气息。“丁香空结雨中愁”没有“丁香一样的结着愁怨的姑娘”更能唤起人们希望和幻灭的情绪，在表现时代忧愁的领域里，这个形象是一个难得的创造。第二，在古代诗词里，雨中丁香结是以真实的生活景物来寄托诗人的感情的。诗人依据生活的经验而又加上了自己想象的创造。它是比生活更美的艺术想象的产物。
本诗巧用象征手法，营造了一种既实又虚，朦胧恍惚的氛围。“我”在雨巷中独自彷徨，似乎有满腹的愁苦，但又不愿说出。
诗中的姑娘，我们可以认为是实指，是诗人心中期望已久的、高洁又忧郁的姑娘，也可把其当做是诗人心中的理想和追求，表达了诗人对人生的苦闷，对未来的渺茫憧憬。
对雨巷的记忆作文
是雨，淅淅沥沥的雨丝在暮色中缠缠绵绵地舞动着，舞动着。我撑着一把油纸伞，在江南那深邃的小巷中寻觅着，寻觅着一个丁香一样的姑娘。
那是怎样的一个姑娘？她在我的梦中出现过很多次了。在梦中，她同我一样，撑着油纸伞，在那雨巷中默默的彳亍着。那单薄的背影纤如丁香，在这细密的雨幕中，仿佛弥漫着水一样的忧伤，在我心头荡漾起层层的涟漪，在那涟漪的尽头，我仿佛会嗅到那静寂的丁香的芬芳……
转过一个又一个深邃的雨巷。蓦地，在那雨幕尽头，出现了那样一个身影，一个如同我梦中一般的丁香一般纤细的身影。是你吗？是我梦中那丁香一般的姑娘吗？她慢慢的.近了，近了。油纸伞下，那太息般的眼光若隐若现。我静立，不敢上前，怕惊散了她丁香般的身影，丁香般的眼光。她近了，近了，从雨幕的那一头穿越而来。细密的雨滴飞溅在她那淡紫色的裙摆上，印染出一朵朵精致的花朵，宛若丁香。她近了，近了，她撑着油纸伞从我身旁飘过，也飘过一阵丁香的芬芳，仿佛是我的梦一般。我望着她远远地走进了雨幕之中，雨丝模糊了她那纤如丁香的背影。她远了，远了，仿佛是走到雨幕的尽头，走向那颓圮的篱墙。她远了，远了，在这雨的哀曲里，消散了她的背影，消散了她的芬芳，油纸伞转动，是否会划起漂亮的弧度，圈起她的背影，消失在那雨巷的转角……
又是一个细雨霏霏的暮色，我撑着油纸伞，独自彷徨在那悠长而又寂寥的雨巷。那如丁香一般的姑娘啊！我该去何处寻觅你呢？
