as recorded in a historical book of the sixth century, in ancient times, there lived a man named huan jing. he was learning the magic arts from fei changfang, who had become an immortal after many years of practicing taoism. one day, the two were climbing a mountain. fei changfang suddenly stopped and looked very upset. he told huan jing, on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, disaster will come to your hometown. you must go home immediately. remember to make a red bag for each one of your family members and put a spray of dogwood on every one. then you must all tie your bags to your arms, leave home quickly and climb to the top of a mountain. most importantly, you must all drink some chrysanthemum wine. only by doing so can your family members avoid this disaster.on hearing this, huan jing rushed home and asked his family to do exactly as his teacher said. the whole family climbed a nearby mountain and did not return until the evening. when they got back home, they found all their animals dead, including chickens, sheep, dogs and even the ox. later huan jing told fei changfang about this. fei said the poultry and livestock died in place of huan jing's family, who escaped disaster by following his instructions.
since then, climbing a mountain, carrying a spray of dogwood and drinking chrysanthemum wine became the traditional activities of the double ninth festival, to avoid evil spirits and misfortunes.
the story begins around 2170 b.c. after the great flood in the hsia dynasty. yu, king of many kingdoms, was credited with stopping the flood, and with teaching farmers how to cultivate their fields, thus commencing a prosperous epoch.
at the same time in heaven the jade emperor wished to help the farmers raise animals and cultivate their fields. he gave orders to his ten sons to become ten suns and travel across the sky one at a time, each taking one day. the ten young men disobeyed; all ten of them came out every day, and the heat from ten suns shining all at once made the earth intolerably hot. people and animals died of heat, rivers dried up, land became barren and forests scorched and burned.
the farmers prayed, giving sacrifices and burning incense to heaven for deliverance. the jade emperor heard their prayers and saw the destruction caused by his sons. he sent hou yi, his bravest god, down to earth to solve the problem of the ten suns and end the catastrophe. hou yi was a good, courageous god with a beautiful wife, chang er. deeply in love with each other, they were known as the divine couple. chang er didn't like the thought of going down to earth, but she was unwilling to be separated from her husband, so together they descended to earth and became mortals among the eastern clans.
on the east bank of the heavenly river(1) lived a girl weaver, daughter of the emperor of heaven. she worked hard year in and year out, weaving colourful clothes for gods and goddesses.
since she lived all alone, the emperor took pity on her and allowed her to marry the cowherd on the west bank of the river. however, she stopped weaving after she was married. greatly outraged, the emperor forced the girl back across the river and allowed her to join her husband only once a year.
there are many stories on how this festival was created. one other story is about a maid. in the han dynasty, mr. eastern was a favorite advisor of the emperor. one winter day, he went to the garden and heard a little girl crying and getting ready to jump into a well to commit suicide. mr. eastern stopped her and asked why. she said she was a maid in the emperor's palace and her name was yuan-xiao.
she never had the chance to meet her family after she started worked at the palace. she missed them so much every 12th lunar month. if she couldn't have the chance to show her filial piety in this life, she would rather die. mr. eastern promised her to find a way so she could reunion with her family. mr. eastern left the palace and set up a fortune-telling stall on the street and disguised himself as a fortuneteller. because of his reputation, many people asked for their fortunes.
but every one got the same prediction - a severe fire accident on the 15th lunar day. the rumor spread quickly. everyone was worried about the future and asked mr. eastern for help. mr. eastern said, “on the 13th lunar day, the god of fire will send a fairy lady in red to burn down the city. if you see a lady in red wearing green pants riding a black horse on that day, you should ask for her mercy.” on that day, yuan-xiao pretended to be the red fairy lady. when people asked for her help, she said, “i'm the messenger of the god of fire and came to check on the city and i'm going to set up fire on 15th. this is an order from jade emperor. he will watch from the heavens.
i will give you a copy of the imperial decree from the god of fire. you should go to ask your emperor to find a way out.” after she left, people went to the palace to show the emperor the decree which reads “the capital city is in trouble. fire burns on the palace, and fire from heaven burns all night long on the 15th.” the emperor of han dynasty was very shocked. he called and asked mr. eastern for advice. after pondering for a while, mr. eastern said, “i heard that the god of fire likes to eat tang-yuan (sweet dumpling). does yuan-xiao often cook tang-yuan for you? on the 15th lunar day, let yuan-xiao make tang-yuan.
your majesty will take charge of the worshipping ceremony and you will give an order to every house to prepare tang-yuan to worship the god of fire at the same time. also, deliver another order to ask every house in the city to hang red lantern and explode fire crackers. lastly, everyone in the palace and people outside the city should carry their lanterns on the street to watch the lantern decoration and fireworks. if everything goes this way, the jade emperor would be deceived.
then everyone can avoid the fire accident.” the emperor happily followed the plan. lanterns were everywhere in the capital city on the night of the 15th lunar day. people were walking on the street. fire crackers kept making lots of noise. it looked like the entire city was on fire. yuan-xiao's parents went into the palace to watch the lantern decorations, and yuan-xiao made a big lantern and wrote her name on the lantern. they happily reunited together after her parents called her name. everybody was safe during the night. the emperor of han dynasty had a new order that people should do the same thing every year. since yuan-xiao cooked the best tan-yuan, people called the day yuan-xiao festival.

”i will do anything to save the people,“ the yellow dragon said resolutely.

they flew to the sea, scooped up water in their mouths, and then flew back into the sky, where they sprayed the water out over the earth. the four dragons flew back and forth, making the sky dark all around. before long the seawater became rain pouring down from the sky.

the people cried and leaped with joy. on the ground the wheat stalks raised their heads and the sorghum stalks straightened up.
the god of the sea discovered these events and reported to the jade emperor.
”how dare the four dragons bring rain without my permission!“ the jade emperor was enraged, and ordered the heavenly generals and their troops to arrest the four dragons. being far outnumbered, the four dragons could not defend themselves, and they were soon arrested and brought back to the heavenly palace.
in the han dynasty in qiancheng lived a man by the name of dong yong. his mother died when he was a child. while living with his father, he worked hard in the fields. each time they went out, he would put his old father on a small cart and follow it on foot. when his father died, he was willing to sell himself into slavery for a little money for the funeral. knowing that he was a virtuous man, his master gave him ten thousand coins and allowed him to go home.
dong was in mourning for three years. when it was over, he decided to return to his master to work as a slave. on his way he met a woman who said to him, ”i am willing to marry you.“ so they went together to his master. ”i have given you money,“ the master said to him. ”thanks to your generous help,“ dong said, ”i was able to bury my father. although i am a man of low birth, i know i ought to work for you to repay your kindness.“ then the master asked, ”what is your wife good at?“ ”she can weave,“ dong answered. ”if you insist on doing something for me,“ said the master. ”please ask your wife to weave a hundred bolts of fine silk for me." dong's wife set to work in the master's house. ten days later the hundred bolts were ready.

阿钦波娜是阿兹特克王国国王的妹妹。她温柔、娴静，待人亲热，深得父亲莫占苏玛的喜爱。父母死后，就由继承了王位的兄长负责照料。小公主越长越漂亮，身材也越来越健美。可是到了青春妙龄之际，却时时郁闷不乐……
周围的人看了非常焦虑，就去请教智者和巫医。他们说，公主着了魔，应该给她换个环境。可以带她去国王的温泉行宫去休养。当时阿钦波娜已满二十岁。后来，王室、国王的谋士和祭司们都认为，只有公主的灵魂得到了纯洁，她的忧郁之症才会痊愈。于是，决定让公主以太阳神的妻子的名义到太阳神庙去敬奉天神。
然而，日子一天一天地过去了，无论在疗养胜地还是在太阳神的行宫，阿钦波娜仍然像过去一样愁眉不展，精神恍惚。
当时，在她兄长统治的王国里发生了一件引人注目的大事情。它将使整个王国的命运发生一次重大的改变：年轻勇敢的魁特里亚克受王兄惠齐洛波契特利的差遣来到阿兹特克来了，随行的有十个图兰国贵族。当时惠齐洛波契特利统御的强大的阿兹特克豹族兵团已经征服了北部高原。战神派他的弟弟为特使来同阿兹特克王国建立同盟关系。
阿兹特克的鹰族首领们反对向豹族妥协，把魁特里亚同他的随行人员全部扣留了起来，送交国王处置，并没收了他们的全部礼品准备奉献给太阳神。
囚犯们被押解送往王宫的时候，阿钦波娜正在花园里散步。当她看到一位英俊潇洒，一身戎装的青年骑马走过，不禁目瞪口呆，心狂跳不已。由于一时的激动，使昏倒在地。侍候她的宫女赶忙上前搀扶并向国王报告了所发生的一切。
看来，阿钦波娜已经昏死过去了。宫女们给她按摩，呼喊着她的名字，但她始终都未睁开过眼睛。人们小心翼翼地把她抬回了“太神贞女”宫，等待她苏醒过来，然而结果很令人失望。因此，大家都以为她已经死了。
黄昏时分，举行了盛大而隆重的仪式，把阿钦波娜抬到太阳神庙边的王国的寝宫安葬了，并按照习俗，在她周围摆满了香炉、银杯、鲜花异草和日常的食品。送葬的人们无不为这位美丽公主的去世表示悲哀和痛哭。
被囚禁在太阳神庙旁专门用来关押将被掏出心脏向太阳神献祭的人犯的囚牢里的魁特里亚克，忧心忡忡，既担心被杀，又担心暴怒的兄长会毁了这个美丽的古老王国，他更不希望来自同一位祖先，供奉同样的太阳神的兄弟民族自相残杀再在这个多难的土地上重演。
魁特里亚克虔诚地向太阳神维拉科查祈祷：如果他能促成阿兹特克的鹰族战士和豹族战士和睦相处，即使贡献出他的年轻的生命也在所不惜;如果太阳神能保佑他活着看到和平到来的那一天，他将使自己的儿子永远成为尊贵的太阳神宫的守护者。
祈祷完了以后，魁特里亚克来到石室里石壁的缝隙边，斜贴着背靠坐在那里，等待太阳神的启示。谁知，他刚刚靠上去，就仰面朝天摔进了一条黝黑的古老的通道，他惊喜万分地沿着这条通道一直走到了庄严肃穆的太阳神殿，魁特里亚克压制住心头的狂喜，神情严肃地抽出身边的银刀刺出胸上滚烫的热血，供奉在太阳神面前的祭坛上。这时，他仿佛听到远处的王族寝宫里传来细细的呻吟声。
魁特里亚克抑制不住内心的好奇。壮着胆子近前细听，好像是女人的声音。心想这一定是出于太阳神的谕示，要他去挽救这位被活埋的女人，使他的第二个许诺得到兑现。
魁特里亚克轻轻地推开寝宫的大门，不由得被眼前的一切惊呆了：在鲜花丛中躺着一位花容月貌，脸色苍白的女人。她正在有气无力地呻吟着。当他走近她的身边，准备开口说话时，她微微地睁开了眼睛……。魁特里亚克有些犹豫起来，不知道是该继续逃呢还是留下来完成他曾对神许下的诺言。他看到姑娘令人怜悯而夹杂着些微期待的神情，很快地作出了决定。于是他拉起她的手，怀着敬意和不安，在姑娘的脸上亲吻了几下，然后又紧紧地把她拥抱在怀里。姑娘在魁特里亚克温暖的怀抱里呆了一会儿，轻轻挣脱了出来。他们言语相通，像磁石一样被彼此吸引着，互诉着各自的身份来历和一切年轻的恋人们都会的深情话语，炽烈地相互亲吻，直到魁特里亚克突然醒悟到自己的处境。他允诺一定会再回到她的身边。公主对他说：“好吧，晚上再见，亲爱的，你的阿钦波娜在这里等着你!”

第二天，国王和他的随从启程返回首都，阿钦波娜也随行同往。她哭泣着，预感到可能发生可怕的事。而魁特里亚克呢?国王早已命令连夜押解走了。为的是不让任何人看见。十名图兰贵族作了祭祀月亮神的牺牲品。可是关于如何处置公主和魁特里亚克，谁也不知道。直到晚上，这对情人的命运，一直神秘莫测。
夜晚，在月光下，一艘巨大的独木舟在一望无际的湖面上漂泊，船上坐着这对情人。陪伴他们的还有几位王室成员和一队卫兵。阿钦波娜和魁特里亚克心情非常平静，还有什么比让他们相拥在一起更宽容便甜密的惩罚呢?他们在科里切登岸并在那里的国王行宫又度过一个缠绵绯恻而艳丽的夜晚。卫兵们分兵把口，严防有人来打扰这对情人的美梦……
然后，他们被流放到奎纳亚克城附近神秘莫测，环境奇特的山沟里，在卫队的守卫下过了一段与世隔绝的生活，他们在那里，在梦见带一身美丽羽毛的蛇向他们飞来的夜晚悄悄地生下一个男婴，取名奎兹尔科亚特尔，也就是“美丽羽毛裹着的蛇”的意。
不久，两国握手言和建立阿兹特克联盟的消息传来，阿钦波娜和魁特里亚克不由得抱着他们的孩子相拥而位……就在这一天这对历尽艰辛的夫妇便含笑逝去。
奎兹尔科亚特尔被以最隆重的仪式，恭迎回到阿兹特克王国最大的太阳神庙，被所有的阿兹特克人奉为太阳神的大祭司和守护神。
后来他在一次宫廷辩论会中，因为反对惠齐洛波契特利的连年征战和穷兵黜武的言论被勇敢善战的臣民所拒绝，一气之下，愤而渡海出走，只留下那句铮铮誓言：“阿兹特克人，不久我会回来的!”至今还被人们所传颂。
在图兰城附近有座蛇山，名叫库杰别克。从前，那里住着一个名叫库特利奎的女人。她有四百个儿子，人称四百兄弟;还有一个女儿叫科约夏坞琪。
库特利奎曾经许下诺言，每天都去清扫蛇山上的神庙。有一天，在她清扫圣殿时，有一个插着羽毛像一团羊毛的小球从天而降。她把小球揣在怀里。等她扫除完毕，想把小球取出来时，却找不到了。
于是她就怀孕了。她的儿子们看到自己的妈妈快要生孩子了，十分恼火，气势汹汹地说：
“是谁让咱们家蒙上如此奇耻大辱?”
大姐也趁着机会挑唆：
“兄弟们，我们的老娘没有征得咱们的同意就怀了这么个野种，多丢咱们的脸呐，我们打死她算了!”
这件事让妈妈知道了，她非常伤心，也很觉得难为情。可是，她肚子里的孩子却安慰她说：“别怕，这件事我自有安排!”女人听了孩子的话之后，心里舒坦了些，不再发愁了。
然而，由于觉得母亲给整个家族带来了不幸和耻辱，儿子们经常流露出对母亲的不满，时常想要杀死她。大姐更是这样不断唆使自己的兄弟们行逆。
四百兄弟全付装备起来。他们梳洗自己的头发，把自己像武士那样打扮起来。在四百兄弟里有位叫做魁特里亚克的，他把兄弟的打算尽快地告诉了母亲肚子里的惠齐洛波契特利。惠齐洛波契特利说：“好好看着他们，看他们干些什么，听他们说些什么，我自有办法对付他们。”
四百兄弟向山里母亲的住地进发了。走在最前面的是恶毒的大姐。他们手执长矛，全身戴满了棉饰品和贝壳饰物“
魁特里亚克赶到山中，准备早一点通知妈妈肚里的孩子，他的兄弟马上就要杀过来了。惠齐洛波契特利问他：“你看见，他们现在在什么地方?”魁特里亚克回答说，他们已经抵达错班吉特兰。惠齐洛波契特利又问：“现在呢?”回答说，来到库沙尔柯附近。接着又问了几次，回答自然是越来越近了。最后魁特里亚克告诉他，兄弟们已经迫在眉睫了，走在最前面的是大姐。
就在兄弟们快要踏进门槛的刹那间，惠齐洛波契特利全身披挂地诞生了。他双手各执一面蓝色圆盾，一技蓝色的长矛。他的脸上布满黄色斑纹，头上插着羽毛头饰。他的大腿和双手涂着同样的蓝色，他的左脚比右脚薄，上面覆盖着羽毛。
惠齐洛波契特利命令他母亲的一个侍卫把木蛇点燃，木蛇燃之后，直冲大姐而去，大姐在烈焰中嚎叫着死去。四百兄弟把木蛇蛇剁成几段，直到现在那颗蛇头还在蛇山上。
惠齐洛波契特利手执利器，发起进攻，乘胜追击他那些一心想着弑母的哥哥们，把他们赶下山去，又追着他们绕山跑了四圈，使他们无力自卫，也无力反击。
四百兄弟失败了，死伤无数。幸存者请求息火谈和，但惠齐洛波契特利丝毫不予理睬，发誓要把他们杀得一个不剩。于是他不断地四处出击，追杀逃亡者，以他们的血来洗刷家族所蒙受的悖逆罪。仅剩的几个只好躲到远山林地委奇兰巴那遍地荆棘的河谷盆地去了。
惠齐洛波契特利把四百兄弟的武器和领地据为己有，满载而归，成为阿兹特克人供奉的战神。
惠齐洛波契特利的母亲库特利奎成为大地女神。他的姐姐在大火中升上天空，成为月亮女神，四百兄弟成为天的明星神祉。
那是五千多年前的事了。那时候中国有个英明的国君叫尧，他有个贤明的臣子叫舜。尧经过多次考验，认为舜是个非常值得信赖的人，就把自己的两个女儿——娥皇和女英嫁给了他。后来，又把自己的帝位禅让给他。舜的确没有使尧失望，他为人民做了许多好事，特别是他命禹治好了天下的大洪水，使人民过上了安定的日子。
可是，舜到了晚年的时候，南方的九疑山一带有几个部落发生了战乱。他便决定亲自到那里视察一下，以解除那里的战乱。舜一向非常尊重两位夫人，就把自己的打算对她们说了。不料娥皇和女英担心他的身体，都不赞同他到九疑山去。女英说：“你一个人去，我们不放心，要去我们一起去。”
舜说：“九疑山那里，山高林密，道路崎岖，你们是女人，怎么能吃得了那样的苦。”虽然舜帝一再劝阻，但两位夫人决心已定，非得坚持要去。没有办法，在一个夜晚，舜带上几位随从，不辞而别，悄悄地出发了。
几天不见舜帝回宫了，娥皇和女英心中着急了。舜到什么地方去了?后来找到侍从一问，这才知道舜帝已经动身去九疑山好几天了。他们放心不下，立即收拾行装，准备车马，随后追赶上去。
追赶了十几天，这一天来到了扬子江边，但遇到了大风，幸亏有位老渔夫，知道了她们是舜帝的夫人，用船把她们送到了洞庭山，让她们在一座小庙中住了下来。大风一直刮了一个多月，她们出不了湖，只好焦急地盼望着风早些停止。她们登上山顶向远方张望，心中暗暗祝福舜帝身体安康。
这两位多情的夫人，迎来无数次日出，送走无数次落日，她们盼啊，盼啊，望眼欲穿，愁肠万断，但也没有见到舜帝的归帆。
渐渐地，风停了。在一个风平浪静的中午，她们突然看到从南方飘来一只插有羽毛旗帜的大船，这是宫廷里的船，便急忙跑去迎接。但是，一看到船上的侍从和士兵，一个个愁眉苦脸，满面哀容，她们立刻知道发生了什么事情。
侍从们一边把舜帝的遗物交给她们，一边说：“舜帝驾崩于九疑山下，已经埋葬在那里了。”娥皇和女英虽然已预料凶多吉少，但这情况一旦被证实，她们便哭昏在地。
从此，娥皇和女英每天都要爬上洞庭山顶，抚摸着身边的一株株翠竹遥望九疑山，流淌着伤心的泪水。就这样，日复一日，年复一年，她们的泪水洒遍了青山竹林。那满山的翠竹也与她们一起悲伤、一起流泪，株株翠竹上都沾上了她们悲伤的泪水，竟在上面留下了永远擦不掉的斑斑泪痕。
后来，娥皇和女英由于过分地想念舜而投到湘水中自杀了。他们成了湘水之神，被称为“湘妃”或“湘夫人”。
传说在我国遥远的西北，有一个极乐的国家，叫“华胥氏国”。这个国家是那么远，无论你是走路、乘船，还是坐车，都无法到达那儿。这个国家没有什么政府、首领，而且一般的人们也没有什么欲望和嗜好，所以这里的人们不仅生活美满而幸福，寿命也很长。他们落在水里淹不死，掉在火里烧不化，在天空如履平地。生活在这里的人们，可以说是地上的神仙。
在这个极乐的国土上，有个名字叫“华胥化”的姑娘，有一次，她到东方的一个非常美丽的大沼泽“雷泽”去游玩，偶然看到泽边有一个巨人的大脚印，觉得这个脚印又奇怪又好玩，想比较一下脚印的大小，便用自己的脚去踩这巨人的脚印，谁知这一踩就有了某种感觉，后来她就怀了孕，生下了一个男孩，取名叫“伏羲”。
雷泽的主神是雷神，在这里留下脚印的就是他，所以人们都说伏羲是雷神的儿子。他长的确实有些像雷神，是人面蛇身。说他是雷神的儿子，还因为他能沿着一道天梯，自由自在地到天上去。
后来伏羲成了东方的上帝，辅佐他的是手里拿着一个矩尺的木神句芒，他和伏羲共同管理着春天。
伏羲对人们的贡献非常大。他曾经画出了八卦，这其中包括了天地万物的种种情况，于是那时候人们就用它来记载生活中发生的各种事情。伏羲又把绳子编织起来，做成鱼网，用来捕捞江河里的鱼。他看到人们都是手拿木棍到江河里去打鱼，他便把编织鱼网的技术教给人们，使人们捕到许许多多的鱼。他手下的句芒从他的鱼网得到了启发，仿照他的办法编织出了鸟网，教人们去捕鸟。这都对人们改善生活条件提供了良好适用的工具。
要说到伏羲对人们做出的最大的贡献，恐怕是他将火种带给了人们。在这之前，人们吃的是生冷食物。吃肉食时，腥膻的生肉常常使人们生胃病、坏肚子;吃生的野菜、野果，使人们消化不良。看到这一切，伏羲的心中很难过。
一次，他来到天山，恰好遇到了大雷雨，刹时间电闪雷鸣，令人十分恐怖。突然，山林里燃起了熊熊的大火。原来，是雷电把干枯的树木引燃了。这时，有许多小动物被烧死了。伏羲拾来这些小动物一尝，非常美味可口。于是，伏羲便把火种留了下来。他把这火种传给每一个人，教人们用火烤熟食物来吃。
人们吃了烤熟的食品，一个个身强体壮，无论捕鱼、打猎都非常有气力。而且，人们的疾病也越来越少了。
以后伏羲有了许多后代。他生了咸鸟，咸鸟生了乘厘，乘厘生了后照，而后照就是巴图的始祖。所以，伏羲也就是巴图的始祖了。
