一只烂西瓜与诺贝尔奖
1928年，英国细菌学家亚历山大•弗莱明发现青霉菌能分泌一种物质杀死细菌，他将这种物质命名为“青霉素”，但他未能将其提纯用于临床。1929年，弗莱明发表了他的研究成果，遗憾的是，这篇论文发表后一直没有受到科学界的重视。
后，德国化学家恩斯特•钱恩在旧书堆里看到了弗莱明的那篇论文，于是开始做提纯实验。1940年冬，钱恩提炼出了一点点青霉素，这虽然是一个重大突破，但离临床应用还差得很远。
1941年，青霉素提纯的接力棒传到了澳大利亚病理学家瓦尔特•弗洛里的手中。在美国军方的协助下，弗洛里在飞行员外出执行任务时从各国机场带回来的泥土中分离出菌种，使青霉素的产量从每立方厘米2单位提高到了40单位。
虽然这离生产青霉素还差得很远，但弗洛里还是非常高兴。一天，弗洛里下班后在实验室大门外的街上散步，见路边水果店里摆满了西瓜，“这段时间工作进展不错，买几只西瓜慰劳一下同事们吧!”想着，他走进了水果店。

一只烂西瓜与诺贝尔奖
1928年，英国细菌学家亚历山大•弗莱明发现青霉菌能分泌一种物质杀死细菌，他将这种物质命名为“青霉素”，但他未能将其提纯用于临床。1929年，弗莱明发表了他的研究成果，遗憾的是，这篇论文发表后一直没有受到科学界的重视。
