but one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the negro is still not free. one hundred years later, the life of the negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. one hundred years later, the negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. one hundred years later, the negro is still languishing in the corners of american society and finds himself an exile in his own land. so we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.
in a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. when the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the constitution and the declaration of independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every american was to fall heir. this note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
it is obvious today that america has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. instead of honoring this sacred obligation, america has given the negro people a bad check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.” but we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. we refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.
so we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.
we have also come to this hallowed spot to remind america of the fierce urgency of now. this is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice. now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of god's children. now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.
不死之药
There was, a man who came to the palace of the State of Chu and gave the guard a kind of medicine for immortality to be presented to the king.

“石洞?”鸟太太说话了，“那个冰冷的地方怎么能住?我们还带着孩子呢!”

可是当蹦蹦走进自助餐厅时，狗熊经理一伸手说：“请您卖五张票。”“为什么?”袋鼠蹦蹦不明白。“因为您还带着四只鸟。”狗熊经理回答说。
“可是他们只是住在我这里的鸟，他们不是来吃自助餐的。”蹦蹦解释着。
“我不管，一个脑袋就得买一张票。”狗熊经理坚持说。
为了自己肚子不饿，蹦蹦买了五张票，他心疼地说：“如果每回吃饭都这么破费，我很快就会破产的。”鸟的一家饱餐了一顿，别提有多高兴。
两只小鸟渐渐长大了，他们开始学唱歌，当蹦蹦在树林里散步的时候，两只小鸟就开始唱歌了，听着歌儿散步，这是多么美妙的事情呀，蹦蹦陶醉了。过了一会儿，鸟妈妈开始唱催眠曲了，鸟妈妈唱了一遍又一遍，两只小鸟就是不睡觉。蹦蹦却瞌睡起来，一连打了十个哈欠，“咚——”地一声，又一次撞到了树上。
“还好，这回树上没有鸟窝。”蹦蹦被撞得有些糊里糊涂了。还没等他回过神来，一群野蜂向他冲过来，糟糕!树上有蜂窝。蹦蹦可不想赔蜂窝，他拔腿就逃，野蜂们紧紧追上来。袋袋里的鸟们一个劲地喊：“蹦蹦加油!蹦蹦加油!”蹦蹦被追得没办法，跳进了一个臭水塘，在泥塘里打了个滚。这下，蹦蹦变成泥巴袋鼠，浑身臭烘烘的。
野蜂是不追了，可鸟的一家受不了了，“我们可以暂时到树洞里住几天。”鸟太太说，“记住，是暂时的，我们还回来的。”鸟太太说。
没有鸟的一家住在袋袋里，蹦蹦是多么自由呀!不过，他也觉得一下子冷清了许多。

传说天上管理马匹的神仙叫伯乐。在人间，人们把精于鉴别马匹优劣的人也称为伯乐。
第一个被称作伯乐的人本名孙阳，他是春秋时代的人。由于他对马的研究非常出色，人们便忘记了他本来的名字，干脆称他为伯乐，一直到现在。
一次，伯乐受楚王的委托，购买能日行千里的骏马。伯乐向楚王说明，千里马少有，找起来不容易，需要到各地巡访，请楚王不必着急，他尽力将事情办好。
伯乐跑了好几个国家，仔细寻访盛产名马的燕赵一带，辛苦倍至，但还是没发现中意的良马。一天，伯乐从齐国，在路上，看到一匹马拉着盐车，很吃力地在陡坡上行进。马累得呼呼喘气，每迈一步都十分艰难。伯乐对马向来亲近，不由走到跟前。马见伯乐走近，突然昂起头来瞪大眼睛，大声嘶鸣，好像要对伯乐倾诉什么。伯乐立刻从声音中判断出，这是一匹难得的骏马。
伯乐对驾车的人说：“这匹马在疆场上驰骋，任何马都比不过它;但用来拉车，它却不如普通的马。你还是把它卖给我吧。”
驾车人认为伯乐是个大傻瓜，他觉得这匹马太普通了，拉车没气力，吃得太多，又骨瘦如柴，于是毫不犹豫地同意了。伯乐牵走千里马，直奔楚国。伯乐牵马来到楚王宫，拍拍马的脖颈说：“我给你找到了好主人。”千里马像明白伯乐的意思，抬起前蹄把地面震得咯咯作响，引颈长嘶，声音洪亮，如大钟石磐，直上云霄。楚王听到马嘶声，走出宫外。伯乐指着马说：“大王，我把千里马给您带来了，请仔细观看。”
楚王一见伯乐牵的马瘦得不成样子，认为伯乐愚弄他，有点不高兴，说：“我相信你会看马，才让你买马，可你买的是什么马呀，这马连走路都很困难，能上战场吗?”
伯乐说：“这确实是匹千里马，不过拉了一段车，又喂养不精心，所以看起来很瘦。只要精心喂养，不出半个月，一定会恢复体力。”
楚王一听，有点将信将疑，便命马夫尽心尽力把马喂好，果然，马变得精壮神骏。楚王跨马扬鞭，但觉两耳生风，喘息的功夫，已跑出百里之外。
后来千里马为楚王驰骋沙场立下不少功劳。楚王对伯乐更加敬重了。
【贾人渡河】
现代人看来，“商”和“贾”的语意无大差别，都是贸易的意思;但在古时候，“商”和“贾”在经营方式上却有所不同，所谓少卖为“商”走卖为“贾”.从一个地方买进，到另一个地方卖出，用这种方式做生意的人叫贾人。
从前有个贾人，在河南办了一批货，取水路贩往外地销售。船在河中顺风行驶，忽然浓云密布，狂风骤起，大雨倾盆，河水陡涨。贾人走出船仓查看货物，一股大浪袭向船头，把贾人拍落水中。贾人在水中挣扎呼喊：“救命呀!”
一个渔夫听到喊声，急急忙忙把船摇过来救人。贾人看到渔夫，大声喊道：“快来救我，我给你一百两白银。”
渔夫把贾人救起来，送进船仓，贾人换好了衣服，拿出十两银子送给渔夫，说：“拿去吧，这十两银子够你辛苦半年了。”
渔夫不接银子，看着贾人说：“刚才你在水中许诺说给一百两银子，而不是十两。”
