Dear _,
The spectre of global terrorism is prevalent. Fundamental civil liberties are under threat, not only by those who seek to destroy our society, but also by those who have been charged with the task of safeguarding it. We are possibly entering a period of momentous constitutional change and legislative upheaval. Therefore, it seems to me that the 21st century looks set to be both an exciting and crucial time in which to embark upon legal study.
My desire to study Law stems from a growing fascination with World events, as well as with the minutiae of our day-to-day existence. As Helena Kennedy QC states 'The Law is the bedrock of a nation; it tells us who we are, what we value, who has power, and who hasn't. Almost nothing has more impact on our lives,' ('Just Law', 20_): this, I believe, defines the importance of Law. I am stimulated by present-day ethical considerations which may impact upon the legal framework of this country: Everyday Law (Aviva Golden, ), for example, stipulates that marital union may take place only between two, consenting adults of the opposite sex; yet, when marriage harbours civil as well as religious implications, is it right to discriminate? How is it possible for one to reliably arbitrate the point at which abortion should be deemed illegal? Both are among issues which I find to be perplexing and fascinating in equal measure. I am interested also in the fundamental components of legal practise; the exposition of complex drafts (such as marriage or business contracts), being something which I feel would be facilitated by a firm and comprehensive grasp of the English language. I would say, in addition, that I am a confident and articulate public speaker - exemplified by my participation in the House debating team - and one who regularly takes pleasure in assuming the role of 'Devil's Advocate' for the purpose of arguing controversial points of view, irrespective of personal bias.
My work experience with the Crown Prosecution Service in Gloucester really fired and reinforced my enthusiasm for a career in Law. I had the opportunity to shadow administrators, solicitors and office clerks, observing critical procedures at every level: from case-work and preparation, all the way through to the excitement of litigation in the Crown Courts. This enabled me to lay to rest any sensationalised preconceptions (such as those arising from TV dramatisations) in favour of a more rounded insight into the legal field; backed up, of course, with Brian Heap's 'The Way In', and Philip Kenny's 'Studying Law' - both of which have provided valuable insights. It has also invested me with some notion of what to expect from the very wide range of career opportunities currently available within the legal domain.
With respect to my extra-curricular life, I work as a sales assistant for Maltby Books in Cheltenham. I am also the recent recipient of a Millennium Volunteers Award of Excellence for having contributed 200 hours to my local community - to whit, the Pate's School Library, and Cheltenham Children's Theatre Association. As regards the latter, I am currently director, secretary and Committee member of three years' standing, in addition to having acted lead roles in several Summer productions. I also played the part of Richard Greatham in a recent Pate's 6th form production of No?l Coward's 'Hay Fever'. All these activities have demanded a significant degree of sustained commitment, integrity and competence; in addition, they have afforded me the opportunity to develop administrative skills, computer literacy, and the ability to communicate ideas to people under a variety of circumstances. I would say that I have acquired valuable skills and experience as a result of these ventures; qualities which I hope would contribute significantly to a promising career studying Law at university.
Yours sincerely,

Dear _,
I have always had a fascination with the archaeological world. Archaeology provides me with the opportunity to question how my ancestors lived, worked, survived and created what is now the world today. My interest in learning about humanity’s past arose from when I was a child, where I was captivated with artifacts in museums. It provided a forum which was to my imagination and introduced me to experimental archaeology.
As I have matured, my enthusiasm and excitement for archaeology has grown after visits to Chester and York, where I was able to appreciate not only the archaeological artifacts found in these places, but also the magnificence of the standing buildings that remain today. This lead to a particular interest and eagerness to learn more about the ways of everyday life for the people living in the ancient world, in particular the Roman Empire.
My A-level study of archaeology has demonstrated my commitment to learning techniques, methods and theories needed to engage in effective research, excavations, delicacy and preservation of artifacts. Reading books such as ‘Archaeology is Rubbish’ by Tony Robinson and ‘Excavation’ by Steve Roskams has continued my studies. These books have provided me with extra knowledge of how to deal with specialist sites, such as waterlogged and underwater excavations. Additionally, they have developed my understanding of techniques used by archaeologists to gain the most accurate results when reconstructing the past.
A-Level Religion and Philosophy has extended my knowledge of archaeological aspects such as Roman religion and ritual. Moreover, geology has developed my understanding of how geological features can impact the landscape, which is essential for desktop archaeology and investigating settlement. Geology has also increased my ability to date and provide a location as to where certain artifacts may have come from. I have experienced hands on archaeology at the ‘Dig’ centre in York. This developed my practical methods of excavation and interpretation of artifacts. The ‘Dig’ centre gave me the opportunity to familiarise myself with animal bones and how they can be used to help archaeologists in recreating the past.
I have a particular interest for many sports including, karate, rugby and athletics. My commitment to Karate has earned me the rank of 1st Dan black belt, which has qualified me for the teaching of the subject, and given me effective leadership qualities. Similarly in rugby, I am in the process of becoming a qualified referee. This has been a valuable experience as it has developed my team leading, and team work skills.
My extensive work within the college has gained me a position on the college council as enrichment representative; where I have brought the students and staff closer together. Subsequently, the responsibility and trust placed in me to do this job has provided me with excellent communication and organization skills. Furthermore, as illustrated above, I am a conscientious, hardworking student and I’m more than willing to accept and overcome new challenges that I may face during a place at higher education.
Yours sincerely,
——

Dear x,
What would life be without technology? In this world that we live in it isimpossible to be fully efficient in a business society without having graspknowledge of information and communications technology. Information technologyever changing in our business society and I desire to be a part of this changingprocess. Through out years of studying Information Technology I have grown tolike the subject. Although, part of the course is somewhat demanding, thefurther involvement in the course is what has drawn me most to the course. Myutmost belief is that a combination of both courses would enlighten and engageme through out my degree course. In my years of studying information andcommunication technology I have used softwares like Macromedia Flash andMacromedia Dreamweaver to create websites and also the use of Microsoft Accessto arrange data bases for businesses as my coursework. Both Business andInformation and Communications Technology are subjects I am totally in love withand testimony to this fact is the AS Award for Information and CommunicationsTechnology I received in the recent past. I have also excelled greatly inBusiness Studies both in GCSE level and AS level and hope to excel further inyears to come at your university. The world has had a rapid grown in globalmarkets through automation and e-commerce and this can be linked withInformation Technology and the web with the ultimate goal of being moreefficient in the rapidly growing global market. All these have provided me withinspiration to be involved in a world where new technology is beingdeveloped.
On a lighter note, I work in my school as a lunch time supervisor everylunch time for the past two years. This job has taught me what commitment, hardwork and time management is all about as I have managed to blend both myacademics and my job together and still be prompt in submitting in work andpreparing for exams and excelling in them. I thrive in situations where I haveto work under pressure as it makes me alert and spurs me in doing even greaterthings. My further sense of responsibility comes from my post as beenSanderson's events captain for my school. This has given me the opportunity tobe in control and create events for the house as well as feel as part of ateam.
Other aspects of life that interests me out of school are charitable works.I have seen first hand, the misfortune of people being born into the povertytrap and the human rights violations that ordinary people like us have to facebecause of the misfortune of being born into one of the poorest countries andcontinents on earth. This has made me more aware than other teenagers of theless privileged and handicapped in every society I live and always eager torender my help and support in any way I can. This has led me to volunteer at theLittle Monkey's Toddler group in Shaftesbury every week. In addition to thatevery Friday, I go to a neighbouring disabled children's primary school to helpthe teachers out with their sporting activities. Furthermore I am a member ofthe global student forum in which our aim is to see changes in our society byusing our initiative to make the world a better place.
Sometimes I see my self at the top floor of a business institution lookingdown at the works of my hands and I feel a sense of achievement, fulfilment, accomplishment and triumph all at the same time. In faith, this dream would becompleted through hard work and commitment inside an Information technology andbusiness degree for the next four years. A wise man once told me that there arethree types of people in this life, those that make it happen, those that watchit happen and those that ask: what happened? My aim is to be in the group ofthose who make it happen. I hope to be an asset to your university bothacademically and socially.
yours Sincerely

Waterloo称之为 “Admission Information Form (AIF)”;Queen’s的最中规中矩叫做“Personal Statement of Experience (PSE)”;Western与Laurier更简单直接叫做“Experience Profile”;但个人最喜欢的还是Trent’s的“Equity Admissions Application Form”。
要求“Use up to 1,500 characters for whatever you think is appropriate.”(话题自选,字数要求1,500)写一篇好的文书给出这5个建议,请叫我知识的搬运工!
皇后大学的‘goals essay’,问的其实很简单“What are your goals at Queen’s and beyond”(对未来在皇后的学习生活有什么目标),有的同学既没有明确说出自己的goals是做什么或者goals跟在不在皇后无关,对‘beyond’也什么都没说。
“I think you’re better off going with something from the heart … you’re going to hear crickets!”,她也用这样的句式开头“I never thought my sister would find someone who cared about what other people thought as much as she did – until I met Craig.”
BAD: “She is a person I cannot cope with”
GOOD, 但是还不够有信服力: “She is a person with whom I cannot cope”
BEST: “It is behaviour I will not tolerate”
“My goal is to earn a good job”这种就不应该是18岁的人说出来的话了... 尽量让你的句子看起来很高级,但还是表达了你自己,换成“I am determined to obtain a challenging and rewarding career”就好多了。
Sir Ken Robinson

Dear _,
An experienced engineer of security printing with China’s Central Bank, I now would like to scale higher intellectual heights by pursuing Ph. D. studies in mechanical engineering at your university. I believe that my strong background in CAD has adequately prepared me to embark on this endeavor.
I have been working since 1999 for the People’s Bank of China, a Chinese version of the Federal Reserve, at its unique research institute of security printing, with the responsibility of designing the Chinese currency and the machinery to produce it. By engaging me in a variety of projects, the job afforded me ample exposure to cutting-edge developments in computer technologies, particularly in CAD software. I have, for example, recently redeveloped a purchased CAD (Computer Aided Design) software to make it more suitable for our own purposes. By adding our own part/subassembly to the database and make our own drawing criteria, we have achieved dramatically better efficiency.
My job performance, which has won me professional respect from all of my colleagues, was achieved thanks to the strong background I acquired as a student in computer science. My undergraduate GPA ranked first among the 63 students of classmates in mechanical department, for which I was awarded first-class and second-class prizes many times. My graduate GPA ranked among the top 4% of the 105 students in my year, which won me the “San Hao” scholarship every year during the three years of my graduate studies.
Unlike many other Chinese students, who are content with performing well in exams, I made a point of learning through my own hands-on experiences. In the Master’s program at the Beijing Institute of Printing, I gained an in-depth understanding of artificial intelligence, including expert system and genetic algorithm, especially in neural network. For my thesis, I programmed a multi-level BP neural network with C language to analyze my mathematical model, and applied much of my knowledge in optimization. I thus became able to program with a host of different computer languages, especially C++, with which I helped my graduate advisor to design a paper-cutting machine. To analyze the mechanism statically and dynamically, I programmed a software system to analyze and emulate it on screen. In undergraduate studies, I had often programmed with Fortran77 and the Basic language.
Upon the completion of my Master’s studies, I easily passed the doctoral record examination in CAD/CAM of Beijing University, one f the top universities in China. But I gave up the opportunity in order to gain more practical experience in the industry. The decision proved to be right, as it guaranteed me better access to sophisticated facilities, such as state-of-the-art personal computers. With the People’s Bank of China, I have thus accumulated solid expertise in many kinds of operating and application software systems, particularly in CAD. I now have a firm grip on the latest developments in computer science in China.
The challenges I met and the successes I achieved at the People’s Bank have not only endowed me with confidence but also fired off my desire to further improve myself. I have enjoyed high-quality and efficient production with the use of a kind of PC-based CAD software, MDT, developed by Autodesk Corporation. I now have a dream: some day, every person can design his favorite product with some sort of CAD software, and then search for an ideal factory over high-speed internet its production; and the factory will put specifications of the product, as it has received them via the high-speed internet into its CIMS, and out pops the product, as designed, at the end of the factory’s production line. It is a beautiful dream for every engineer, but many difficulties the speed of data-transfer and how to manage the product data among CAD, CAM, CAPP and CAE systems. These questions are fascinating, and I would like to come up with my own answers to them.
To prepare myself for advanced studies in your country, I have persisted in improving my English proficiency. As demonstrated by my score of 700 (96%) in the verbal section of GRE, I now have an adequate command of English for undertaking graduate studies in your program.
After carefully comparing the strengths of many universities, I find Mercy University particularly suited for my purpose. It has got the best combination of quality faculty, many state-of-the-art facilities, and an intriguing academic environment. Currently, China still lags significantly behind Western countries in mechanical engineering. I hope that, with a few years of graduate studies under your seasoned guidance, I will be able to return to my motherland and help bring mechanical engineering in my country to international standards.
Although my ultimate objective is a Ph. D. degree, I am willing to do a Master’s degree if necessary. In either case, I would like to concentrate my studies in one or a combination of the following areas: CAD, CAM, CIMS, Computer graphics, Mechanical design, Mechanical manufacturing, Optimization, Artificial intelligence, and Robotics. Your favorable evaluation of my application will be highly appreciated.
Yours sincerely,
