Will I get a low Mark if the examiner stops me during the speaking test?
A. The First is For Timing
考生:“I want to say the really really really important thing is …”
B. The Other Reason is to Ask Different Questions, Letting You Use a Wider Range of Language.

Recently I came across an interesting article on the internet about the benefits of drinkingwarm water with lemon in the morning. The website name is bodyandsoul.com.au.
You would normally think that lemon water is just one kind of drink that helps keep your body hydrated, however, it brings you many other benefits that you can?t imagine. – The article says that if you build up a habit of kicking off your day with a glass of warm waterwith the juice of half a lemon, you will do your body and mind a great favor.
Firstly, lemon juice is a great source of Vitamin C, thus it helps boost your immune system in fighting off colds and flu. Moreover, lemons are great for combating skin ageing because they are rich in antioxidant properties. Lemon also helps clean our urinary tract and detoxify our livers. The list of benefits doesn?t end there. The high level of potassium in lemons can helpbrain and nerve functioning and control blood pressure. Lemon water can also ward offstress and depression, which have been linked to low levels of potassium. As a result, the article suggests if you continue drinking warm water with lemon first thing in the morningfor at least 21 consecutive days, you will notice the difference in your skin and general healthimmediately.
Describe an interesting place in public
You should say:
what it is
how you can go there
what people do there
and explain why you think it is an interesting place.
For my job I currently live in the capital city of our country which is ... (say the name of the capital city in your country...). It has been more than 5 years since I left my hometown and yet this is the town where my heart belongs to. I will always remember the days and places where I spent my childhood and teenage, the golden years of my life. The name of my hometown is (...say the name of your hometown...) and it is located in the northern part of the (... say the city/ district name where this town belongs to...). This town will always be special to me, no matter where I go, how far I go. There are many interesting places if I consider from different perspectives in my hometown that I can recall now. Out of these places, the rail station, which is located at the southern corner of our city is the one I would like to talk about.
In my childhood, the rail station in my hometown was the most mysterious and interesting place for us. We, as children, were not allowed to enter the main premises where the train stopped and this prohibition made us more curious about this place. This is still a place which is quite interesting for me. This is possibly because this rail station is the entry and exit point for me- to and from my hometown. When the train drops me in this station, I feel a sensation of being home. On the contrary, during the time of my departure, I feel an acute melancholy that I won't be able to express in words. This place has always been a mystery to me and it is still a place full of happiness, sadness and enigma.
From two other perspectives, this place is quite interesting to me. One- the surrounding view of this station is quite spectacular and would give someone an impression that he is standing on a tall mountain and can see the green fields below all around him. The view gives the first impression of the natural beauty this area has. In fact, I have never seen any other train station which is located in such a higher place and gives such a beautiful view. Second- the different types of people who come here each day is an interesting thing to observe. Some people come here to sell numerous products, some wait for their relatives or family members to arrive, some to see off their relatives or friends, and finally, some are part of the administrative office of the rail authority. In my opinion, this is an interesting hub for people of different ages, places and purposes.
If I am to suggest a foreign tourist about the interesting places of my hometown, I would suggest him to start with this rail station. This rail station will give a very good idea of our town, people and places to be there. To me, this is the gateway to a beautiful town where my heart belongs to.
关于这部分的雅思口语官方评分标准描述是:“Use a wide range of both simple and complex structures 同时使用简单及复杂的语法结构”;
“Demonstrate flexible use of structure 融汇运用不同的语法结构”;
“Focus on accuracy without losing fluency注意确切且流利”和“Be communicative有表达欲”。
When did you start to use social networking sites?
Let me see. Um, it was probably six or seven years ago, when I was in high school. Back then, we had a popular networking site among students, called Renren, which was sort of like the Chinese equivalent of Facebook. However, it wasn’t managed well, so I started to use wechat a couple of years ago. It's a real game-changer. Everyone has shifted to Wechat and its friends circle, I mean, everyone, literally.
还有要强调的内容,比如it's a real game-changer; I mean, everyone, literally 等,我们的语速同样要放慢,因为这是我们情绪和感受的体现。
I went to Starbucks/ and ordered an Americano,/
which is my Dad's favorite,/ as well as mine.
An article you read online or from magazines about healthy living,或者An activity you do to keep fit的时候,自己又变成了健身狂人~ 这种难道不是前后矛盾么?

Describe a mistake you once made.
You should say:
what it was
how you made this mistake
when it was
and explain how it affected you.
The biggest mistake in my life was falling in love with the wrong girl who had a completely different view of life, love and relationship. I was hardly 17 years old when I fall hard for this girl.
Initially, we were classmates and then became friends. In a year I started to feel something about her that was quite extraordinary and hard to explain. I guess people call this 'love'. My whole world started to shift and I was surrounded by a mirage for this whole time. Not a single moment had passed when I didn't think about her. She was the centre and power source of my universe. When I proposed her, she expressed her boundless joys and acted as if I should have proposed her earlier. So far, this is a sweet and innocent love story of a teenager and I was happy to have her in my life.
However, it took me only a few months to realise that she was not serious about our relationship. When she was my whole world, I was her just another temporary boyfriend. The relationship ended in ten months and I was so broken-hearted that I could not concentrate on anything for a while. My parents also knew about it and they were very supportive of me. First few days, it was quite difficult for me to get back to my normal life, study or go outside. I simply could not appease my mind that I made a great mistake and it was like an illusion that I need to come out from soon. However, when I started realising that I made a big mistake by approaching a serious relationship without even knowing the girl genuinely, I started making peace with my mind. I was completely honest with myself and that eventually helped me to get out of the depressive time I went through at that time.
The lesson learned from this mistake made me more cautious about making any kind of relationship and I am happy that I took this mistake as an event to learn a lesson. However, I often feel bad that how someone could be so naive to play with someone's sentiment so cheaply.
Describe an interesting tradition in your country
You should say:
what it is
where it came from
when it occurs
and say why you think it is interesting.
Well, China has a long and rich history, you know, so we have countless traditions, but today I’d like to talk about what usually happens during the Spring Festival, which is the most important celebration for Chinese people.
On Chinese New Year’s Eve, all the family members would come back home for the family reunion dinner, no matter where they are and how far away they are from home. And it’s not an ordinary meal, I mean, every dish has its special meaning. For example, we must eat fish that day, because in Chinese, fish is pronounced as YU which sounds like “surplus”, so you see, that’s a good wish for the coming new year, meaning that the family would make more than enough money.
And I’m sure you know the tradition that everyone has to eat dumplings on New Year’s Eve. The interesting part is, when we make the dumplings, we would mix some coins or peanuts into the fillings, and the one who get the specially made dumpling would have good luck throughout the whole year. I know it sounds a little superstitious, but it’s a time-honored tradition.
And there’s another activity we have to do during dinner, which is like a ritual, that is, to watch the Spring Festival Gala broadcast by China Central Television. It’s an annul variety show, and it’s the most watched TV show all around the world, you know, because of the large population in China.
Anyway, I think it is the tradition that helps people get in festive mood during Chinese New Year, so I believe it’s worth passing on the next generation.

1
What’s your full name?
My full name is Linwei Ma. Ma is my family ……
What shall I call you?
2
What do you do now? Working or studying?
I’m a third year university student. My major is……
What are you studying?
My major is Finance.
Do you prefered watch film in the cinema or at home?
Well, I prefer to watch films at home, definitely, because it’s, uh, pretty flexible, and pretty comfortable, you know, if I want to go to the bathroom, and wash some fruits to eat, I can take a pause, or I can stop the movie, and then, I can rewind it, or watch it again, or go on watching it, and also, comfortableness is also something I pursue, I mean, when I watch films in the cinema, I wouldn’t just sit on my comfortable bed or couch, but at home, It’s totally different, I can watch films everywhere I want, you know, with a cup of beer, or a plate of fruit slices, and that’s amazing and comfortable, so this is why I think watching at home is my preference.
I’m so nervous.

关于这部分的雅思口语官方评分标准描述是:“Use a wide range of both simple and complex structures 同时使用简单及复杂的语法结构”; “Demonstrate flexible use of structure 融汇运用不同的语法结构”; “Focus on accuracy without losing fluency注意确切且流利”和“Be communicative有表达欲”。
Describe a person who taught you something.
You should say:
who the person was
where you met him or her
what this person taught you
and explain how you felt about what he or she taught you
I would like to talk about my teacher, Mrs. Bolger. She was my English teacher when I was in university. Well, my foreign English teacher. She was about 50 years old, tall and always very well-dressed. She was an eccentric woman actually, with many interesting perspectives and opinions. I first met her in university, of course, when she was introduced to us by the head of the English department. This was about 4 or 5 years ago now. I enjoyed what she taught us, she taught us a lot of English and American literature – which I must say I enjoyed very much. She had a really interesting way of analyzing literature actually. I find it gave me new insights into life, people, their emotions and their feelings. It was quite meaningful and she always taught us with a certain passion and enthusiasm that the other teachers lacked. I wish that more teachers were like this because it’s a lot easier to learn about a subject, especially in a second language, if the teacher has a passion, love and enthusiasm for the subject.
Part3
1. What are the qualities that a good teacher must have?
A good teacher should be, in my opinion, enthusiastic, patient but firm, and have a good sense of humour. Naturally, a teacher should have a good knowledge of their subject, but more importantly I think a teacher should be good at explaining things in an interesting and engaging way that encourages the students to think and develop good thinking skills.
2. When should children start to receive education?
Children usually start going to go to kindergarten at 3 years old in China. And although they don’t really learn that much, this is really the start of their educational life. I think it’s the same in most countries. Then at 6 years old they go to primary school.
3. What are the differences between the old and the young in accepting new ideas?
Young people are usually more open-minded about accepting new ideas. Generally, this is true. Older people get set in their ways, are less flexible about new ideas, new foods, new ways of doing things, and so forth. It’s pretty normal. It’s almost always the case. However, there are some older people who are more easy-going and accepting, because maybe they become relaxed in their old age and more wise and understanding about things. So, there are always some exceptions to the rule.
4. Do you prefer to study by yourself or with your friends?
I actually prefer to study alone. I don’t really like to study with others because everyone studies at their own pace and has different strengths and weaknesses. This means you can waste a lot of time if you study with others – also there are always some people that cannot stop chatting, or gossiping or simply not staying focused on the topic at hand, and this is just a massive distraction. So, in general I prefer to do most of my studying alone. Maybe occasionally it’s nice to sit and have a coffee with fellow students and discuss certain aspects of our studies, for sure, but actual studying, for me, is best done alone.
Describe a person you saw in the news who you want to meet.
You should say:
who the person was
when you saw him or her
what was the news about
and explain how you felt about the person or the news
A person I think I’d like to meet that I’ve seen in the news is Oprah Winfrey. You may know her, she’s one of the richest women in the world – she’s a TV host from the US. I am not sure how often she is on the news, but she has her talk show, she hosts it, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and I’ve seen it multiple times, and I really like her personality, her attitude and assertive character and the way she interviews people, listens to them and offers her opinions. I did see her on the news several years ago, in fact. It was a time when she went into a high-end handbag shop and was looking at different and very expensive bags. The shop assistant did not recognize her, and was apparently very rude to her by refusing to take down from a high shelf behind her, a very expensive bag that Oprah wanted to see, and Oprah felt that she was treated in this way because she is a black woman – because of racial prejudice. Anyway, I saw this both in the newspaper and on television, because even though Oprah did not reveal which shop it was (because she didn’t want to damage the reputation of the store), she did openly discuss the incident with the media, and then someone in the BBC, I think, managed to track down the actual shop, who then gave a public global apology, claiming it was a misunderstanding. I think the incident took place in Switzerland, I’m not sure. I am not sure how I felt about this incident. I think it’s an interesting story, and I’m always interested to see international news stories especially about famous stars like Oprah Winfrey.
Part3
1. What kind of people can be usually seen in the news?
Politicians usually feature in the news a lot, and some celebrities. And, of course, reporters and news presenters who go to different places and different countries to deliver live reports on television.
2. Do you think famous people, celebrities, can have a big influence on the general public by their behavior?
Yes, I think so. Especially on young people. Young people like to have idols and role models and they tend to get very passionate about following famous people sometimes, especially singers, pop icons, sports personalities and some actors. So, famous people have a responsibility to behave fairly decently in the public eye, so that they do not negatively influence young people, in particular. Also, today the media are like vultures, they are always following famous people looking for gossip – so if you’re famous you not only have to make sure you behave perfectly in public, but you must also protect your private life from snooping journalists who are looking for a story. So, yes, it’s not always the responsibility of the celebrity, it’s also the gossip from the media that can have an influence on young people.
3. What kind of issues are frequently reported in the news?
Oh, lots of things are reported in the news… The news might talk about international events, treaties, conflicts, and major things that are happening in the world between governments. The news might also cover the environment, the economy, business news… things like this.
If there is a natural disaster like a hurricane or an earthquake or something, this will be reported, and sometimes a reporter will be sent there to do a live report on the event, maybe interview some locals and so forth – for example, only a few weeks ago I heard about the eruption of a volcano in New Zealand. Reporters arrived on the scene shortly after the incident and interviewed some of the relief crew on live television. Things like this are commonly reported on the news, both on television, and on line.
4. What’s the difference between the news nowadays and the news in the past?
The main difference between the news today and the news in the past is that in the past everyone relied on TV and newspapers for news, but today people read most of their news on their smartphones. So, the news is more up-to-date today than in the past. It’s an interesting topic because today there are different opinions about the reliability of the news. Some people say we can trust the news more today, and some people think we should trust the news less, because there is more censorship and control of the news. I’m not sure what I think to be honest. Because there are so many more ways of getting news from all over the place, I don’t really know whether we can trust it more or less than in the past, but I do know that it’s much easier to access the news and reading news on our phones is certainly is a good way to kill time on the subway or in a taxi, or when you’re waiting to be served in a restaurant or other times like this.
(比如考官问 What do you do? I have been a high school mathematics teacher in New York for over 5 years.)
得分点二:Pronunciation(发音)
If I were YOU, I'd go by BUS。
(如 BBC 广播或 The Voice of America)
得分点四:Grammatical Range & Accuracy(语法多样性及准确性)
I like to play the piano which was a present from my mother when I was 5 years old, and every time I play it I feel happy and cheerful.
Describe a piece of local news that people were interested in.
You should say:
what it was about
when you heard/ read about it
what the story was
and explain why it was interesting to you.
I came across this intriguing article in a newspaper I read at my school’s library. It involved how positive attitudes have greatly affected people?s success, based on the story of how alocal woman had never given up her dream and had now become a world-famous novelist.
According to the news story, optimistic people are more likely to be successful. Since they look at the bright side, their lives are always full of enjoyment. Therefore, when running intoproblems, optimists try their best to work out solutions. This leads them to great achievements. In contrast, pessimistic people tend to act negatively, which not only puts them under a lot of strain, but also has a bad impact on their performance and people around them.
Since I read this news, I have tried to maintain positive attitudes about everything. Whenever I fail to do something, I will not blame myself but work harder to overcome such failure. I hope that, like this woman, everybody can learn to be optimistic about whatever situationthey face.

I will talk about my best friend Amit’s family. I have known them for ten years now. I met Amit at college. He was a fun-loving person and soon we became great friends. His home was near our college. As my family lived in another town at that time, I was staying in the hostel. I had some good friends in the hostel but I hated the food they served. Amit knew this. He would frequently invite me to his home. His mother is a kind woman. She is very caring and affectionate. Whenever I visited them she would prepare my favourite dishes and serve them with great love. I found my own mother in her. I also enjoy a great relationship with Amit’s father. He is a retired engineer. We both share the same passion for cricket and electronics. Amit has an elder brother who works in Germany. I have met him only a couple of times and on all those occasions he was extremely cordial. He is like an elder brother to me. Amit now lives in the Middle East and I am in Singapore. We still talk to each other on phone but I haven’t seen him in a year or so. However, I make it a point to visit his parents whenever I am in Bangalore. They are like my own family to me and have always treated me as their own son.
Describe an achievement that you are proud of
You should say:
What it was
How it was made
What difficulties have you encountered during the process
Why you are proud of this achievement
Well, I would like to start by saying that I am a goal-oriented person and I love to chase my targets and accomplish my goal. Here I would like to mention a time when not only I but my family also felt proud on me.
I was when I was in my 11th class and the school organized a farewell party for our seniors: the 12th grade students. I was given the responsibility of delivering a speech and my friend, who is a great orator, was assigned the duty of hosting the function. We started preparing for our presentation and before the event we were all good to go. However, a day before the event, my friend met with an accident and she broke her leg. This was a bolt from the blue for everyone and everybody thought that all the preparation would go in vain in the absence of the host. At eleventh hour, my teacher took a bold decision and he approached me with a firm trust that I could shoulder my friend’s responsibility. I became very nervous because I had never hosted any event before but I respected the faith of my teacher and with the help of my friend, I prepared myself a night before. Next day, I was feeling butterflies in my stomach when the event started but honestly speaking, the whole event went smooth when I stood on the podium. After the event, I took a sigh of relief and when my teachers and friends complimented me, I felt on top of the world. I received an award as well from the chief guest of the function. I, then, went back to hospital to meet my friend and I gave her the award which I think she truly deserved.
All in all, it was such a great experience of my life and it made me realise tht life is all about going boldly after your dreams without paying attention to naysayer. Thanks.
Will I get a low Mark if the examiner stops me during the speaking test?
A. The First is For Timing
考生:“I want to say the really really really important thing is …”
B. The Other Reason is to Ask Different Questions, Letting You Use a Wider Range of Language.
雅思口语话题详解: a movie you would like to watch again
Describe a movie you would like to watch again:
You should say:
What it was about
When and where you watched it
Who you watched it with
and explain why you would like to watch it again
类型:comedy, tragedy, science fiction, fantasy, thriller, suspension, animation
演职人员阵容: cast (leading/supporting/voice, character, director)
其他: visual & sound effect, plot, background, finale
2. 感受词
shocked, amazed, touched, moved, amused, entertained, impressed
As my favorite epic science fiction film, Interstellar is definitely the one that I would like to watch again.
And it was last year, like in October, everybody around me was talking about Interstellar which was no doubt the box-office smash and the hottest topic at the moment. After hearing so much about it, I decided to go to the cinema to appreciate it with the company of my boyfriend who happened to be a major scientific enthusiast, and to my knowledge he had looked forward to it for a long time.
The film is truly amazing both on plot and special effect. The whole story features a crew of astronauts and scientists who travel through a wormhole in search of a new home for humanity. During this risky trip, we witness both the beauty and cruelty of the universe, the bright & dark side of human beings. But it’s actually love that really touches every audience.
I have to confess that I am really not a fan of science fictions, but Interstellar definitely changes my mind. It takes use of a artistic and accessible way to help audience like me to get beneath the skin of certain scientific concept, but at the same time, we could still get its overriding message about the powerful forces of the one thing we all know but can’t measure in scientific terms. LOVE. For a masterpiece like that, who do not wanna watch & get amazed again.
And I’d like to appreciate this scientific saga again also because, in the film, there are still certain cliffhangers and plots that really confused me, especially the finale. Now I’m still not sure whether those scientists and astronauts find the livable planet for human-beings or they just re-built a home for humans on a space station, and why Cooper is still alive after getting absorbed by the black whole? With all my questions and uncertainness, I do would to find out the answer by watching it again.
比如,假设准备了“A famous person”,结果考到的是“An old person”,直接把说的人换个名字就行了。
比如说,这两个月高频考到这样几个topic(大家可以参见北京雅思学习报的雅思考场专栏):a long distance travel、how to spend your free day、relax.我们完全可以只准备一篇MINI作文:when I have some free days, I just want to relax myself by having a long distance travel.
Do you prefer to study in a quiet environment or an environment with some sounds?
Well, I guess on the whole I prefer to study in a quiet environment, the main reason being that I find it easier to concentrate, because noises or sounds tend to distract me. So in other words, I tend to get more work done when I can't hear anything around me. But saying that, I do occasionally like to listen to some music while I'm studying, because it can make it a little bit more enjoyable.
Does your school have any quiet places for studying?
Yeah, I guess I'm quite lucky in this respect, because there's a pretty big library on our campus with loads of desks for studying, and I'm always able to get quite a lot of work done there, as it's really nice and quiet.
What natural sound do you like the most?
That's an interesting question, and I'm not really that sure to be honest with you, but I guess I would probably say the natural sound I like most is that of waves hitting the seashore, because it's just really soothing, if you know what I mean. And it's a sound I only really get to hear when I'm on holiday, so I also probably associate it with being on holiday, which would be another reason why I like it so much!
Are there any sounds that you dislike?
Yeah, for sure! I mean, firstly, I really can't stand the sound of drilling, simply because it's just such a loud and unpleasant noise, so that would definitely be at the top of my list. And I guess the next one would be the sound of cars hooting, mainly because I hear it all the time where I live, and so it gets quite irritating after a while, especially when I'm trying to concentrate on something.
Are you ever bothered by noise?
Yeah, for sure, especially when I'm trying to get to sleep, you know, if there's a dog barking or something, it can really be quite maddening, but during the day I'd say I can put up with pretty much most noise, unless, of course, the noise is really loud and relentless, like if there's construction or renovation work going on around me.
Do you think that cities will become noisier in the future?
That's a hard question, and I'm really not that sure to be honest with you, but I guess my feeling would be that they probably will get noisier, yeah, basically because if you compare the situation in cities now to what it was like 10 or 15 years ago, then it's obvious that cities have got a lot noisier, mainly, of course, due to the increase in traffic on the roads. So unless something changes, I would say that this trend is likely to continue into the future, unfortunately.
What sounds remind you of your childhood?
That's an interesting question, and I haven't really thought about this before, but off the top of my head, I would say that one sound that especially reminds me of my childhood is the sound of firecrackers, interestingly enough, because when I was young, I used to love setting off firecrackers with my friends, especially during the Spring Festival. So now when I hear firecrackers, it always brings back good memories of my childhood.
And another sound I’ve just thought of would be the sound of morning exercises going on, because schools always play music through a microphone along with a voice counting the beat of the music, which students have to move along with. So whenever I walk past a school and hear the morning exercises going on, it always makes me think back to when I had to do them, and I'm glad I don't have to anymore!
1. Are there many people living near you?
If yes:
Yeah there are, because I live in quite a residential area, and so most of the buildings around my home are apartment blocks.
If no:
No, I wouldn’t say there are, because I mean, a lot of the flats where I live are empty, which is probably due to the fact that most of the people who bought them didn’t actually plan on moving in, but instead bought them simply as an investment. So yeah, it’s a pretty quiet neighbourhood.
2. Do you know all your neighbours?
Answer A:
Well, I wouldn’t say I know all them, but I know a fair few, and that’s mainly because I spend quite a lot of time in gardens of my apartment complex, which is how I got to know them.
Answer B:
No not really, because my neighbours tend to keep (pretty much) to themselves. You know, I mean, if I happen to see them, we might say hi to each other, but that’s about it, and then they’ll just continue with doing whatever it is they’re doing.
3. When do you see your neighbours?
I guess the time when I mostly see them is when I’m in the lift of my apartment block. You know, that’s pretty much the only time I come into contact with them, because I don’t really know them all that well, so I’ve neverbeen round to any of their homes or anything like that.
4. How often do you see your neighbours?
Well I guess it depends, because I mean, during term time, I don’t see them at all, cos I’m away at university,. but during the holidays, when I’m back home, I guess I probably see them about three or four times a week, because I’m quite good friends with a few of them.
5. Do you think it’s important to know your neighbours?
If yes:
Yeah, I suppose it is, because I think it helps create a good community spirit if we know our neighbours. In other words, it kind of gives the neighbourhood a nice, friendly feel, instead of a cold, unwelcoming one, if you know what I mean!
If no:
No I wouldn’t really say it is, because for me I think friends and family are enough. And I mean, in my case I don’t spend nearly enough time with my family as it is, so I can’t really see the need to get to know my neighbours as well. And this probably goes for a lot of people, not just me.
6. What do you think of your neighbours?
They’re all really nice people. You know, they’re always very pleasant to me whenever I see them. And I can’t think of a single instance when I’ve had problems with any of them. So yeah, I feel pretty lucky to have such good neighbors!
7. What sorts of problems can people have with their neighbors?
Well I guess one of the main ones would be noise. You know, like putting on music too loud or having the TV on full volume, that kind of thing. So that’s probably the biggest complaint that people have with their neighbors. And as well as this, I suppose another problematic issue could be pets, because a lot of neighbors who have them don’t put their dogs on a lead when they’re walking them, which I think is quite in considerate, seeing as a lot of people are quite scared of dogs!
8. In what ways can neighbors help each other?
I’d say they can help each other in all manner of ways. For example, babysitting, looking after a pet while you’re away, um, what else, um, oh yeah, keeping a spare house key for emergencies, you know, stuff like that.
9. How has the relationship between neighbors changed between now and the past?
I’d say it’s changed a lot, and probably the main change has been that nowadays, people don’t really see their neighbors all that often, whereas in the past, they used to do quite a lot of things together. For example, people would often have their neighbors over for lunch or dinner, which doesn’t really happen that much anymore.
1. What kinds of social networking websites do you like to use?
Um…I suppose the main one I use is weibo, which is basically the equivalent of Twitter in the West. And um… as well as that, I occasionally use a website called renrenwang, which is essentially a Chinese version of Facebook, although I don’t really use it as much as I used to, cos I think weibo’s a bit better.
2. What kinds of people do you like to be friends with on those websites?
I’m not really that picky actually. I mean, if anyone’s interested enough to get in touch with me on a social networking site, then it feels quite nice, you know, someone’s gone out of their way to contact me. So I kind of appreciate it, and I’m generally willing to make friends with them.
3. Are you a social person?
Yeah, I’d say I am, cos I mean, I like hanging out with my friends a lot and doing stuff with them. And… yeah, I just generally enjoy being around others, and you know, I’ve always found it quite easy to strike up conversations with people, even complete strangers! So yeah, I’d say I am quite a social person.
strike up conversations – start conversations
(If no:)
Not really, if I’m gonna be totally honest with you! Because um… how can I put it…, I’m just not the kind of person who actively strikes up conversations with others. You know, to me that’s just too much effort, and I always worry that I’ll run out of things to talk about! So I tend to just keep to myself.
4. Is it easy to find real friends on a social networking site?
I’m honestly not that sure because I’ve never really made a big effort to find friends on the Internet, but thinking about it, I’d say it’s probably not that easy, although it’s definitely possible, cos um… I think you never quite know someone properly until you’ve met them in the flesh. At least that’s been my experience anyway!
5. What kinds of chatting APPs or software do Chinese people like to use?
Well definitely the most popular APP right now is WeChat, cos I mean, literally everyone in China uses it. And as well as this, QQ is the other really popular way of communicating with people, and if you’ve been in China for any length of time, I’m sure you’ve been asked for your WeChat or QQ number!

What kinds of books do you like to read?
I'd say I like reading quite a variety of books, both fiction as well as nonfiction. So for example, I'm a big fan of detective novels, because I enjoy trying to solve the crimes while I'm reading, although I have to admit I'm pretty useless at it most of the time! And as for nonfiction stuff, I'd say I mostly like reading things like self-help books and biographies of various people I admire, such as the new book on Steve Jobs, which I'm currently in the middle of reading.
Are you reading any books at the moment?
Yeah, I'm actually halfway through a couple of books right now. One of them's a novel which a friend of mine lent me, and the other is a book on business, which I bought about a year ago, but didn't get round to reading until now.
