Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills.
Psychologist Susan Levine, an expert on mathematics development in young children at the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills. Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition(认知) after controlling for differences in parents’income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said.
The researchers analyzed video recording of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age.
“The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转) and translate shapes,” Levine said in a statement.
The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of the children in the study played with puzzles at one time. Higher-income parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than the parents of girls.

Unusual fashion shows in New Orleans and Brooklyn have showcased nutria fur made into clothes in different styles.“It sounds crazy to talk about guilt-free fur – unless you understand that the nutria are destroying vast wetlands every year,” says Cree McCree, project director of Righteous Fur.
Scientists in Louisiana were so concerned that they decided to pay hunters $5 a tail. Some of the fur ends up in the fashion shows like the one in Brooklyn last month.
Nutria were brought there from Argentina by fur farmers and let go into the wild. “The ecosystem down there can’t handle this non-native species(物种). It’s destroying the environment. It’s them or us,” says Michael Massimi, an expert in this field.
The fur trade kept nutria in check for decades, but when the market for nutria collapsed in the late 1980s, the cat-sized animals multiplied like crazy.
Biologist Edmond Mouton runs the nutria control program for Louisiana. He says it’s not easy to convince people that people that nutria fur is green, but he has no doubt about it. Hunters bring in more than 300,000 nutria tails a year, so part of Mouton’s job these days is trying to promote fur.

I have a special place in my heart for libraries. I have for as long as I can remember. I was always an enthusiastic reader, sometimes reading up to three books a day as a child. Stories were like air to me and while other kids played ball or went to parties, I lived out adventures through the books I checked out from the library,
My first job was working at the Ukiah Library when I was 16 years old. It was a dream job and I did everything from shelving books to reading to the children for story time.
As I grew older and became a mother, the library took on a new place and an added meaningin my life. I had several children, and books were our main source (来源) of entertainment. 纠正长期存在的语文教考分离误区
今年的.作文题旨在引导学生建立正确的语文学习观、阅读价值观，属于限定性材料，一改以往作文审题宽泛、文题八股的弊端，重视对学生认知思考、情感体验的调动，强调学生讲真话、谈真情。这是今年作文题的创新点。
材料中提供的三个角度，要求任选其一，审题难度缩小，每个角度学生都有话可说。课内有限阅读角度引导学生关注教材，纠正长期存在的语文教学教考分离的认识误区;课外大量阅读角度引导学生广泛阅读、深厚积累，超越课内知识的限制;社会实践角度注重引导学生关注社会这部大书，贴近自然、走进社会，以一己之身感受体验，强调知与行。

乍看作文题，我有两个突出印象：一是情理之中，料想之外;二是功在考试，利在千秋。
情理之中是因为今年沿袭了去年的任务驱动型作文，料想之外是因为太接地气了，让学生思考自己日日进行的事情，而且开放度高，因学生素养差异，区分度必定好，是一道好题。
语文素养是《高中语文课程标准》提出的概念，是语文的灵魂，喊了，学生正真关注很少，如今以高考题目出现，引导效果必定难以估计，所以既能很好选拔出语文素养好的学生，又能引导天下学生走向语文学习的正道，功在千秋啊。
这道题的任务类型是做决定式任务，需要在提到的三种途径中做出抉择，选其一。但任务驱动型作文的要害是“在真实的情境中辨析关键概念，在多维度的比较中说理论证。”选其一，但在阐述道理时应通过一定文字量，与其他两条途径比较，说清自己的理由。
这道题学生熟悉，又能激发好学生的情感，一定会涌现出一批情理交融的好文章。
题目平易近人，学生有话可说
第一眼看上去很突然，仔细想想后才发现，原来高考作文就在我们身边，或者说，它考查的就是我们平时所思、所想、所为。这个作文题目引导学生关注自己，关注自己的身边事。

没时间提高语文素养
十几年的寒窗苦读，终于熬到了高考。当我看到这个作文题目时，竟不知如何下笔才能博得阅卷老师的喜爱。原因主要有两个，第一，之前准备的作文是故事类材料作文，没想到高考作文会让我们写这个应该由教育专家来思考的问题。第二，根据作文素材的三个方面来看，我们从小到大接受的语文教育大部分只有课堂教学，后两者基本没时间去实践，如果本身就不喜欢文学，更不会在课外去接触语文了。那么索性就不去讨好阅卷老师了，不如谈一谈“没时间提高语文素养”这个话题，写一个还算有点价值的高考文章。
先从我小时候所接受的教育说起吧。在上小学的时候，其实老师最重视的科目是数学，恰好我又不喜欢数学，所以每天做不完数学题就要挨留，而到学习语文的时候，老师的授课也没有使我有兴趣去学习，比如讲新的课文，老师的方法是这样的：读课文、划段落、找生词、总结中心思想、课后背诵。这样的语文可有什么意思呢?这和提高语文素养有关吗?在这种教育程序下，我们只能越来越厌倦学习、厌倦课堂。而我们又不知道什么是好书，当老师在假期为我们推荐种种名著的时候，我们不知道这些书对我们来说真正有什么帮助。所谓的社会实践，我根本不懂这句话是什么意思，除了在学校一整天的学习之外，我们要回家享受短暂的自由生活之后还要完成写不完的作业。所以我有两个疑问：哪里是社会?什么是实践?回到高考作文题目吧，我在心中只想到了一句话：没时间提高语文素养。
那么我们的时间在哪里呢?百分之八十在学校，而在学校我们只有一两节课能接触到语文，上语文课的时候我们还得划段落、找生词……大概百分之二十在家里，而在家里我们要写作业，记得高中写作业到十二点还没有写完，于是决定放弃，等第二天来学校抄学霸的。如此真正属于自己的时间就所剩无几了。其实作为一个学渣，因为我们课后学习学校知识的时间比学霸少，所以能掌握一些我们喜欢的东西。记得初中有一次上物理课，学霸同桌竟然会问老师“太阳是星星吗?”这个问题，我想很多同学连生活常识都不知道，哪有时间去提高所谓的语文素养呢?作为学生，我们无法控制自己的`时间，也没有权利去改变我们的时间，我们还要在有限的时间去努力掌握一点感情基础都没有的课本知识。
我认为，真正的语文素养是不能在模式化的教育体制下培养出来的，真正的语文素养其实是一种文化气质，别人的气质我们能很容易的就学来吗?而一种气质养成的重要因素就是需要时间的积累，在当前的教育背景下，我们并没有时间去注意自己的气质，在小时候也很少有人会告诉我们应该培养这种气质。所以到高考的时候、到我们已经年满十八岁的时候，再来谈怎样提高语文素养，是意义不大的，因为我们自身的气质已经成型，我们在以后要面对升学、工作等众多问题需要我们花费大量的时间去解决，所以我们在以后很难再提高所谓的语文素养了。
说了这么多不该说的，起码语文是没戏了，其实不该说的话中有很多是真话，讲真话比编假话、编套话更轻松，更何况是在高考上。以后逢人谈起，我在高考上写了个零分作文，也是能吹一辈子的事情。
